Hello, im looking to purchase myself a 240 and pretty much every ad on CL says ohh great condition, "all it needs is a tune".
Yet the price is real low, and if all it needs is a tune why wont he fix it and sell it for more?
What are your thoughts on this, do people that say all it needs is a tune are 100% bs'ers, can major stuff be easily hidden?
Let me know what you guys think :ughug:

what I have come across, is they are an incomplete project car. So whom ever the owner is had planned to buy other parts, but has not so the car has a bunch of parts thrown on it and it runs, but not well.
Also, half of these kids don't want to spend the $500 or so to have it tuned, so they drive it around with whatever shit tune/engine management it has and calls it good to go.

No tune No runs
if it's modded to where it requires a tune it needs a tune
I would never run a car that needed a tune without one
all you are doing is hurting the motor and spending more money at the end of the day

YES, it is really bad to drive a untuned car (how is this not common knowledge?). You risk all sorts of damage to the engine by doing this (especially if you drive it hard). If the tune is in the ball park you could probably get by for a bit but getting it tuned should be your number one priority. Seriously, I don't get why people even bother build a car if they are going to skimp on the tune.

Because they are po s cLars with posLwners who don't know how to tune or what to do to get it tuned. I wouldn't be surprised is these just need tuned cars have pistons cratered from detonation
could be he's just bullshitting his way out. chances are, this guy cant find a problem with the vehicle and is just trying to cover it up with saying "just needs a tune"
cant trust very many people nowadays.

Yeah

Couldnt agree more.
For all the other replies im not running a untuned car, read the whole ad, its regarding people posting ads saying all it needs is a tune.
Example of the car im looking at:
1995 240sx SE
SR20det blacktop notch
5 speed manual
big turbo with a full greddy kit
tien coil overs
some kind of nice rims, forgot
WHOLE s15 front conversion, tal lights, hood etc
Full exhaust
K&N filters all around
300zx calipers
HIDs
Full passive alarm
double dim stereo
Clean paint job
Hes selling it for ONLY 5000$.
Says all it needs is a tune, car randomly starts shaking or not getting full throttle as I drive in first gear.
So from 1000RPM to like 4000RPM its ok then past that its like its losing power or not getting enough then it stalls a bit and picks up till 7000.
When it shifts it grinds a lot in 1-2 gear and 4-5th.

yes, you want to have it tuned. The problem is the owner has probably been driving the hell out of the car to begin with on what ever bad "tune" it has now.
very rarely will you run across a "has base running tune, needs full tune to finish it off."
grinding is from the transmission, not the tune. The surging of the motor could be fuel starvation because of no tune or something far worse. From the list you just posted, I would say once the "big turbo" spools it no longer has the fuel to supply it. Since that list does not state what size injectors he is even running.
My 2cents, don't buy a car you can't test drive and actually roll through the RPM's without any issues or "it needs a tune man, go easy".

He also forgot to mention the most important item on the parts list, the engine management system. I'm assuming since its a greddy kit that the car has some form of emanage (not my favorite) but someone shady could of just slapped a "big" turbo on a greddy manifold and called it a greddy kit. If the car has no engine management system I would stay away since everything else on the car is probably hack. Also the fact that the transmission is grinding tells me that the car has had the absolute crap ran out of it and would make me question the health of the motor. Just my 2 cents but I guess it doesn't matter since I see that the OP is pinked...
