I stripped the threads on the chain idler. Ordered some helicoils at m12x125 which is what I was told was the correct helicoil for that hole. When the helicoils came in they weren't a kit just the Inserts with no instructions on what tap and drill bit to use. I went to the site and they suggested using 31/64 drill bit and a m12x125 tap for the heli. It just seemed weird to me to drill it then tap it at m12x125 to insert a helicoil for m12x125 shouldn't it be a different size for the outer threads of the heli? It seems a lot of people strip this thread. So if anyone with experience could please let me know if they have done this procedure for this bolt what tap and bit you used.

I always hated that most of the time the instructions are only in the kit. Ace hardware has the kits, I just ask them to open one and see what size bit, threads, and tap to use based on the hole.

Unless you have a tap kit that might be able to line up with the inserts I really don't think that the taps for helicoils are something that can be found in most tap and die sets. The drill bit to use is correct with what you have and the tap itself can be bought here.

No ace hardware in the Las Vegas valley has a m12x125 kit :( I had to special order just the Inserts from O'reilly automotive and they basically told me to just Google it.

I wouldn't mind picking up a 60 bit or 24 from harbor freight for $20 but it is true they might not have the exact tap and then I would just be more frustrated. I visited the page but was coming fused k. I guessing those are kits and to get one for m12x125? I have the inserts and the bit just missing tap and wouldn't want to spend more then I would have to.

Well the tap is $28. Not bad as I bought one already for around $60. So just to clarify. On that link that I posted part # 1458-123 is a tap for M12 x 1.25 helicoils and not a kit.

Recently used a helicoil for the first time on my sr valve cover bolts. Figured it would be a regular tap size. Wasn't. Bunch of garbage. I'm going to look into other methods such as time sert.

time serts are nice there is a reason why honda only uses time-serts for thread repair but they are pricy cost me 120 lfor my kit. i actully have a m12x1.25 kit i used on my civic just laying around. if you wana it i still have it with a few inserts left. just whatever you do make sure you make sure its exactly perendical to head surface, otherwise your timing chains might bind.

i agree the kits are expensive. i was lucky in that the hardware store (aka bolt store, NOT home depot/lowes/ace) sells them individually. my datsun had a stripped valve cover bolt hole so i had to drill it, tap it (with the rented kit from oreilly auto parts [free btw]) and then install the time sert that already has a dab of thread locker.

the individual time sert was only $6-7
