First off, sorry if I'm posting in wrong spot, not sure to post here or engine tech, but seems like more people check out this one, so here it goes

I somewhat recently bought an s14 with 155xxx miles, and the timing chain guide, the top one had not yet been removed! I heard it rattle, and was just about to take it off, when just my damn luck it breaks while running and I guess pieces started flying everywhere cuz on the freeway it just somewhat stalled and died! Opened up valve cover and sure enough timing chain guide broke

Well anyways, seems like engine is seized up. Starter clicks and everything else is fine, but won't turn over!
Am I gonna need a full rebuild, head rebuild, or should I just swap in a low mile KA? Anyone knows what's my best bang for buck (broke college student) lol

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I would swap in another KA. You can get them for 400$ or less. Make sure you modify it like you want while the motor is out to make things easier.

When you get the KA you want to put in:

Remove emissions, clean everything, route everything you want the way you want, wire tuck, clean and paint the engine bay, etc...

KA's are awesome motors, make sure you remove the timing chain guides, and lube up that tensioner.

guaranteed you bent valves, possibly some piston damage, cracked valve guides etc etc

Damn so that engine will need a full rebuild...temporarily swap in anther KA and build this one :hsdance:

Sweet, I think I will do that. Swap in low mile KA, and build the one I pull out eventually :)
Thanks guys, appreciate the help

You've gotta pull the timing cover off and see what's broken. The guide is probably jammed in the chain somewhere and is not allowing the engine to turn-over. As long as your timing chains are not broken you should not have bent valves or damaged the pistons at all. All the damage should be under the timing cover. It is completely possible that things are so chewed up under there that the timing cover/oil pump are not useable. If you do not have the knowledge/experience to tear the upper/lower timing covers off and assess the damage yourself then another engine is your only option. Labor to pull all that apart is going to be quite expensive. You're going to need new timing chains/guides, and maybe a new lower cover/oil pump, which is also pretty expensive.

Another KA, however, is NOT going to be $400. A low mileage S14 KA is going to run close to double that much. Also, since you're in Cali, it would not be a good idea to remove any emissions equipment. First of all, what's the point of running a KA if it's not going to pass smog? Second, none of the emissions equipment is going to have any effect on horsepower or torque, so there is no point to removing it.

I don't think KA's cost that much, NO joke, I just gave me KA24DE away for free, to anyone who can pick it up.

it's gone 2 days later lol :)

Here in Cali dualcams are not free. I sold one in boxes for $250. A complete S13 dualcam w/average mileage would sell for about $400-$500. The S14 dualcams are even more than that usually. If I had a complete low mileage S14 dualcam I would be listing it for about $600-$700.

That's crazy! KA's sell here for like 50 bucks. Hell I couldn't even get the whole block sold for 50 so I just gave it away

Jesus! I think it would be cheaper to have a KA24DE shipped from out of state than to buy on here in California. :bash:

Yeah well if I swap in KA I am definitely still going to try and pass emissions.
Ima definitely gonna swap in a KA, where I get it from though, I have no clue yet

For the KA I pull out ima do what racepar1 said, and most definitely try and get it running and stick it in a shell or something in the future if its any good

F*** Cali and its new stupid star smog
It's killing everything out here :mephfawk::fawk:
