View Full Version : AWD RWD "conversion"
What would happen if you took out the sideshafts from the transmission on a wrx or lancer for example. Would the car function normally as a RWD car? it obviously wouldnt act the same but would it be driveable? who has done it before?

there is a guy that converted his wrx to RWD
he did some shit to the front and middle lsd
it was in a magazine..but it said something bout the rear lsd or something being so weak..only suppose to hold 1/3 of the cars power [3 lsd] so it keeps breaking down
ya like i always say"if subaru built an airplane, i wouldnt fly in it." i bet it's a lot easier on the transmission.but let's say for shit and giggles he put an r200 diff in it. How did the car perform?

I was under my friends WRX the other day and the rear diff looked pretty much like an old skool Long snout R160. I dunno how closely related it is though. But if it is close, I imagine a long snout R200 could be rigged up without to much trouble. I kinda like the idea of a rwd WRX...... kinda.

Lancer Evo in japan comes with an electronic center diff. You can control the torque to the front or the rear wheels with a turn of a button. Meaning that you can have more power to the front or rear wheels to create a biased distribution of power. GTR's came with this as well. Im not to sure if the WRX has one but i know that the EVO and GTR are have it as an option.
Evos and STis come with user controled center diffs which on the wrx at least only do a max split of 40/60. Im unsure of the evo ratio but im almost positive its never 0/100. GTRs dont have this option although you can add it with an aftermarket controler.

Starlets are RWD
EP85 Starlet
3door FF GT, Gi, S, Soleil L, Soleil
3door 4WD S, Soleil L
5door FF X Limeted, Soleil
5door 4WD X Limeted
they took a 4WD starlet and made it RWD
this isnt the exact one, but this is an EP85 Starlet
so there were no RWD starlets? i thought some came in RWD. I've never seen a 4wd starlet. i imagine it would be a fun car for the mountains.

in the awd's I'm familiar with (DSM) if you take the front shafts out you will destroy the viscous differential. you need to either get a solid diff or weld that one if you want to do that. its been done before but its also usually to go from awd to fwd for dyno. this is the center diff I'm talking about that actually splits it. there is also a diff in the trans and the problem is the front pass. side driveshaft goes into that. the center diff goes on the other side of the trans, and then the drivers side driveshaft goes into that.

Well shit, guess I was right. Is it the same as the older ones? By that I mean can you swap in an r180 or r200 out of an older Z without to much trouble?

I was at HIN san mateo 2003... and there was the 2f2f skyline that was used in the movie there. It was for sale and the guy that knew stuff about it said they took out the front drive shaft to make it RWD.... maybe u can get more infomation about AWD to RWD conversion by searching stuff about that car?
