i think it would be interesting to hear stories about everyones first drift, ill start,

it was in a 2008 lincoln towncar, i tapped the brakes on a patch of ice over a bridge goin 70+ got sideways for close to 100 feet pretty much in 1 1/2 lanes somehow held it till i got off the ice when it regained traction the car must have jumped about half a foot in the air. i had a passenger in the car at the time and recieved no tip at drop off point. been addicted to driving sideways ever since...

My first drift was when I was 14 years old. Took my dads Jeep Grand Cherokee out in the snow and had to have been going at least 50 mph. Floored it throughout the corner, hit a mailbox, and got charged with driving without a license, and reckless driving. Obsessed with drifting ever since lol

My first drift went something like this....

>driving with friend to find an ATM to get cash out for pick-your-part junkyard
>fuck, missed the turn
>seek next possible place to make a U turn
>spotted
>notice the sudden absence of traffic of the 3 lane street I'm driving on
>what if I...
>lol
>downshift into second gear
>start turning
>floor it
>single cam slammin'
>lose traction
>get angle
>countersteer
>oh shit center divider
>flick the car the way
>friend is impressed
>thinking this will make a cool FaceBook status later
>whoa still no traction
>lol what if...
>calmly flick again back to center divider
>car swings
>pointed straight towards center divider
>oooooooooooohshitshitshitshitshitshitshit
>overcorrect
>neck-snapping flick away from center divider
>friend is both panicking and laughing
>shitshitshitshit noob-self isn't easing off the gas
>maaaaaaaad angle
>spin out
>smack center divider
>car shuts off
>facing opposite direction of traffic
>driver in a c300 has completey stopped and is laughing his ass off in his car while clapping
>shaking
>friend has stfu'd
>ohhhhhhh fuck not my two-tone
>more shaking
>turn car on
>relief
>realize front end of car is sitting on center divider
>leave the scene and pull into gas station
>more nervous shaking
>friend gets out first
>starts laughing
>friend should die I think to myself
>walk out of car and look at front end
>spotless
>AHAHAHAHAH HOLY SHIT
>more laughing
>still shaking
>oh shit whats that
>dented steelie and scratched hub cap
>more laughing
>turn car off
>look for cops and c300 driver
>nothin'
>walk in and get $20 from ATM, then junkyard.
>FaceBook status gets lots of likes
>post story on Zilvia months later
>question if it was drifting
>yeah fuck it

i dont know if this counts as "drifting" but i was driving home in the rain from work and i was getting of the off ramp from the freeway and i was going pretty fast and i downshifted to slow down but my tail started to slide out so i panicked and floored it and got sideways and went down the off ramp like that and when i straitened out i pulled over and got out and just stared at the ramp and thought to myself "did i really just do that.."

"first drift" to me would be connecting a corner or two intentionally haha other than that just sliding around in the rain in an under powered bmw.

Aw yes it was warm sunny day in Southern california off Miramar road. I was driving to my shitty work called ServPro, it was tucked away in the industrial area right next to a Ferrari/Maserati body shop. There is a gradual left turn right in front of the body shop followed by a straight away.

For those of you who have worked in industrial areas, you realize the roads are super wide. The first time I did it I came into the turn at 20mph, pulled the ebrake, slid 10 feet and stopped.

After doing this 100 times over to and from work, I started going faster and teaching myself how to swing it while blipping the throttle, right wheel spinnin and all.

My first actual drift was completely by accident. I was on a canyon run with some friends. Went to downshift to second, missed the gas pedal on my heel-toe. Dumped the clutch into second right at corner entry, rear locked, went sideways, put the power down, and carried it out to corner exit. The passenger in my car thought I was the shit untill I informed him that I didn't mean to do it. He got pretty quiet after that. LOL! I had gotten cars sideways before, but that was my first ACTUAL drift.

Racing carts since I was 6. About age 8, a friend let me barrow his Opel I did a couple of U-Turns in big parking space perfectly. Then long time passed by, about age 16 driving 94 Eldorado FWD. I didn't even know what drifting was. One day my grip driving got bored, so I decides to get sideways. My friends looking out on twin peaks mountain. I kicked that hand brake down let the car get sideways very good, super early initiations. Stayed there about an hour. Then as I was leaving, I had to take one for the road. I was probably trying out 80mph? or something fast. Well that was about 5mph too much, had it been 75mph I would have been fine. Car didn't get destroyed, just ended up on the mountain in the dirt with scratches and needed alignment.
Around age 18 got S13. Still didn't know what drifting was. Did lot've mountain driving, some point in time realized what drifting was. When I hit the track for first time here in the states, on the first drift event, peoples jaws dropped, they all knew it was my first time on track. But like I said it before to some people. You don't just get up and decide you want to drift cars. You build up experience. Look at the roots of drifting, it's all about grip driving and pushing cars faster.

It was raining and I was on my way to school (sophomore year high school). I was turning left at a light, clutch kicked it, shit my pants, and spun out. Had to do a 3 point turn in the middle of the highway. I don't think anyone in that intersection was laughing harder than I was.

Too many people cannot grasp this concept. They think "Wow, it would be cool to be a drifter!". Then they go out and buy a 240, slide it into the nearest immovable object, and think they're hardcore. If you don't know how to drive a car TRULY FAST, like at the LIMIT of grip fast, then you'll have a pretty hard time learning to drift. Drifting is a driving technique, and it shouldn't be the first one you want to learn. Motorsports is not a hobby, it is a lifestyle.

Year 1999, just turned 16 found what i thought to be a sweet raw american powerful sex machine. Also known as 1989 Ford Mustang LX.....4 cylinders of awesomeness!

It snowed heavily in Buffalo NY and me and my amigos would go to the local mall and go snow drifting. It was a saturday night nothing to do so took the Stang to the mall to snow drift. Finally was able to get it swinging back and fourth and blow that sucka up!!!

Fast forward to 2009, spent 2 yrs building my 1989 240 went to a Clubloose event in NJ. Had no clue how to drift it was ackward retarded like a baby giraffe coming out of a mothers womb. I sucked soo bad but didnt care! Now i cant wait for drifting to start!

my first drift was at a drift event a zephyr stadium in Louisiana, i had tried to drift my 350z but had no luck what so ever, but i had my s13 for this event and i was able to drift the entire course without hitting any cones with only a couple of spins, my ebrake not really working well threw me off a little on the first turn. i also managed to get lost on the course and almost hit a photographer but in my defense alot of people were hitting cones so it was hard to tell. they fixed it right after my run though, lol

My FIRST drift was more rallying. We used to manji down streets and grab angle on curves in teh winter. snow filled streets, old saabs, volvos, extended cab trucks or dad's muscle car. That was WELL before we knew what it was. In 97/98, we found out about Option Videos and realized that we could actually DO this sh1t on dry pavement...more than just a burnout into a fishtail I mean. In 99, Superstreet came out with an article on drifting and they had a RWD car and a FWD car. I don't remember what the RWD car was but the FWD was a ITR matte green with gold bbs and both cars were in the mountains of california. I had a (recently turbo'd) Neon at the time and just followed that technique. Wasn't really all that fun. My buddy Brandon had a 91 240 with some 18" Motegi rims that he was trying to sell. I bought it and some friends from RIT ended up talking me into boosting the KA. Grabbed a turbo off of what I BELIEVE was a VW or Mitsu (I know I had a 16G at that time but the Neon had 2 or 3 of them before they started making kits so I don't remember which was which..cuz I still had both cars) Another buddy in Sodus did custom fab work and we homebrewed some piping and a nasty manual boost controller and viola. I was running STUPID rich and sliding on Mt. Read near the Delphi plant (Large GM facility). Then, I changed duty stations (did I mention I was in the Army) to Ft. McPherson in ATL and promptly found an SR to drop into my car and started finding events in Charlotte and still started making the treck up to Englishtown for drift days. And, I guess that would be the first time I actually CONSCIOUSLY and intentionally drifted. Even after all that, I still sucked but at least I knew what I was doing then. lol.

sidenote, the guy who bought my KA-T actually tuned it right and had great success with it. I just sucked at that.

Just picked up my first car, my 96' 240, and after driving around for the first few days, I decided to try and get her sideways. I knew what drifting was, and the basics of it, but the only time I have ever drifted was with my steering wheel on Forza 3 lol. But me and my buddy are driving around and find a road that didn't have anything that I could hit. So I find this road/curve, drive on it once to kinda get a feel for it. Turn around and go for the corner. Was in the top of 2nd gear and ripped the E-Brake. I slide it PERFECTLY nice and close to the curb. Both of us were shocked how badass it was lol. After that I made him get out and take a video and I pretty much do the same thing, nice and close to the curb. I thought it was pretty impressive for the first two drifts i've ever done!

My first time was in a parking lot structure in Japan. I was going to race some asian in a Fairlady Z for talking smack and for a girl. I borrowed my friend's car they called the Mona Lisa. He said some gibberish about e-brake and power over.

We lined up and waited for the flagger to flag. As soon as the flag dropped down, my car jumped ahead in 1st gear. I could hear the sweet sound of the turbocharged inline-6 trying to jump out from under the hood, like Katy Perry's mammary glands in a sports bra. Bam!, threw the gear to 2nd while the tires broke loose because of the power it couldn't contain. The power that Adele couldn't contain with a room full of red velvet cake. I then understeer straight into the parking structure on the right hand turn going up the building. A millisecond right before impact, the car got sideways a bit. And that was my first drift experience, even though I lost that race.

A couple of months later I became the drift king of the parking structure. Shout out to my friend, Han, for showing me the way.

LOL at the Initial D reference

My first time drifting was by accident. I was coming home in NYC, South Bronx, from my friends house. We were really mildly racing through streets. He was in his moms Benz and I was in front on my stock coupe. I was trying to get away from him and hit a right turn a little fast. I can tell it was just too fast on stock suspension because it felt completely weird and horrible. too late to slow down i hit a left turn and that's where she decided she didnt want to drive straight anymore and rather go side ways. while this is happening , I have my little brother screaming in the passenger seat and trying to get my car back into controll and i over-counter steered and completely faced the other way and i just broke and thank god went into a parking space head on. I was glad no-one got hurt and since that day I respect the car and my passenger life so much that I only speed or do stupid shit if it is totally worth it. Second time was a couple of months ago, being late to school It was raining and leafs were on floor. Didnt expect it to be that extra slippery, I have been pushing the cars limit a bit to get fairly familiar with it, and the tires slid on the leafs and I looked like an idiot. Now I am itching to actually learn to drift.

!!chuy!!

my first time "kinda drift" was when i was headed home one rainy night and right before a tunnel i decided to pass someone who was going so slow (below the speed limit) i think it wus a 55mph section, and decided to pass from the fast lane to the slow lane( only two narrow lanes) and as i did i inclined speed preatty fast and in front of the fast lane was a huge diesel truck and next to me on the right side was the wall.. as we entered the tunnel i hit a patch of water causing me to hidro plane and sending me sideways inbetween the truck and the wall...such a close call but i was able to steer my self back into the lane with a quick reaction..it happend so fast and prevented an accident from happening all because i wanted to pass a slow car on the road... that was insane and wanted to learn more on how to control an out of control car....I WANTED TO BE IN CONTROL!!!! HAHAH I WUS HOOKED!

i tried to drift a corner by my school. came in too hot and spun out into the oncoming lane. luckily there were no cars. i wouldn't really consider that a drift though.

learned my lesson the first time and was thankful i didn't get in an accident so i decided to take it to the track. first event was drift day 39 at el toro air field in november 2007. that was my first real drift.

I was 18 years old driving my sr20 240sx with a VLSD home from a car meet, and it was raining and my tires at the time had little to no tread, I was only driving about 20mph and the rear of the car naturally broke lose and I felt as if the car was floating but I had control somehow and I just finished the left turn not knowing what exactly happened. Next light some guy with a dodge charger drives next to me and gives me a thumbs up and says "that was badass"
For the next week I just reimagined what happened and still couldn't believe I actually "drifted" or lost control...

First dry drift was this year and it was sketchy as shit as I overcorrected alot, getting used to the speed was the hard part.

I was 17 just got my drivers permit and did a handbrake turn to impress a girl and my friends. However there was a undercover cop in a Ford Explorer who I thought was just a random car behind me. Then as I finished my handbrake drift. BAAM!! Red and blue light flashing every where under the black window tint, in the grill, and the headlights. He sure was angry ass hell. I then got cited for Reckless driving and got my S13 hatch impounded.

Not the first time I drifted(I can't remember the very first time), but how I came about to knowing what drifting was:
>It was raining and I was with a buddy of mine in the s13 coupe I had at the time.
>Came up to an intersection and since it was raining I clutch kicked and drifted around the corner.
>Completely unaware that I could "drift" my buddy went on and on about how he didn't know I could.
>After his verbal escapade of "fucking awesome"'s and "that was sick"'s and "didn't know you could drift"'s, he caught on to the fact I didn't know what he was talking about.
>Got home that night, he showed me some youtube vidoes of what drifting was, and to this day I can't believe I was drifting and didn't know what it was.
>That was Fall of 2008 I believe.
>So I guess you could say I was drifting before it was cool, since at the time I really didn't know what I was doing except for hot-rodding around corners. lol
Now I waste all my money on my most recent s13 coupe that I'm working on getting Pro-Am FD legal to hopefully compete in some SWD events. -___-

This thread was a great idea, but that's because I enjoy hearing other people's stories. Others might not feel the same.... lol

After watching how skilled the Red Suns are, the Speed Stars become determined not to be humiliated on their home turf. However, the Speed Stars are left in a bind when their leader, Ricky, has an accident during a practice run. They were desperate for a replacement until Ricky learns from his employer that the fastest car in Vernon’s downhill is an Eight-Six owned by a tofu storeowner. He discovers that the store's owner, my dad, was a street racer of great repute in his younger days. Ricky appeals to the older man to take his place in the race against the Red Suns. When the race day comes, I appeared with my Trueno instead. I proceeded to defeat Justin and put an end to the Red Sun’s winning streak.

Despite being originally apathetic about the notion of racing, I began to grow more interested as I received other challenges, and began to understand the concept of a street racer's pride. I then proceeded to defeat drivers in more advanced and more powerful cars. I defeated them in all sorts of conditions culminating in the battle between me and the Red Sun’s leader, Eric. After the race ends, Eric acknowledges that I was indeed fast and advises to Takumi "...there's a much bigger world out there."

Sometime afterwards, an all Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution team from neighboring West Virginia, called Team Emperor, starts dominating in the East Cost area. Initially with the Red Suns as their target, they race against me after their leader (and Eric's nemesis), Marty, discovered I raced against Eric. Initially defeated, Marty issues an impromptu rematch against me. Initially declining, I quickly changed my mind once I saw my girlfriend, Katy, with an older man. Enraged, I races against Mary, which causes my Toyota's engine to explode. Marty then challenges Eric, who proceeds to defeat Marty after noticing and exploiting Marty's inability to tackle some right-hand corners with full confidence (due to the risk of a head-on collision).

Meanwhile, my father knew that the engine in the Eight-Six was about to give out. In anticipation, he had already bought a new engine, Group a 4A-GE 20 valves. Dad installed the engine without a new tachometer to teach me the importance of learning mechanical knowledge and understanding why the car behaves as it does, though he had an instrument set ready for installation once I knew of it.

By this time Eric approached me with an offer. Eric has been putting together an expeditionary team featuring the best racers of the East Cost prefecture, and would like me to join. I didn't want to decide whether or not to accept the proposal until I settled my score with Justin. I proceeded to Washington to challenge Justin and I was able to prevent him from passing. Justin, who takes great pride in his knowledge and ability to race on his home course, concedes defeat and also gave praise to the new Eight-Six. Although I still believed it was more of a tie, I was more concerned about Justin finally acknowledging the abilities of the Eight-Six.

Derrick, the son of Dad's old rival Ken, driving a Toyota MR2 (SW20) later challenges me upon knowing I beat his original target, Justin. He and his father planned to beat me by using a line strategy his father had devised and used against Dad. Father, knowing how Derrick has used the special line factor before, told me that Kai would surely be in front by the later half of the race and proceeds to give me some obscure advice on how to beat Kai. At the last moment before they reach the finish, I realized the meaning behind the advice given earlier by dad when I notices dead leaves piling up on one side of the road. I put my car past the shrubs and into the gutter to sling shot side-by-side forcing Kai to the side of the road where I guessed the leaves would pile up on. As they pass the second bridge side-by-side airborne, Kai landed on the side of the road where the leaves had piled up, resulting in him losing control and spinning out right before the goal.

Meanwhile, Katy tries all she can to repair the damage she caused me. But this was placed in jeopardy when her ex-boyfriend, Mike, takes Katy under duress, even attempting to rape her near the Potomac River. After I heard a few words of a call from Katy, which was cut short, came to the rescue. After finally reconciling as we graduated from high school, I realized my dream to become a professional driver and joins Eric’s team: Project D.

Starting in the Spring, Project D start travelling all over the East Cost challenging the best the interstate scenes have to offer while at the same time, develop each of the driver's skills. We defeated local racing teams, professional drivers, a racing school and a Suzuki Cappuccino kei-car amongst other opponents.

However, each of us have problems along on the way. Earlier on, I is beaten by a Subaru Impreza WRX (owned by my dad) on my delivery run and induces a "4WD Complex" when I was forced to drive it on my deliveries. Meanwhile, Justin had to balance his commitments with Project D with the advances of an opponent and fellow FD driver, Lisa.

I would face one of my hardest opponents in Florida, against Toney "Godarm" Sanders and his theory of one-handed steering. Although I "lost" the battle after damaging my suspension, Tony would stop near the end as the rush of fatigue from the battle caused him to vomit. I also learned a lot, I even allowed to observe Toney’s technique from the passenger seat. Though I doubted that I would start driving with one hand, I did believe I would master using the infinite lines to my advantage in future races.

Back when I was in high school I worked as a gas station attendant by day and a delivery boy for my father's tofu shop early in the morning.
