so, my roommate bought an s13 with a dual cam KA that's had the hot-cam swap done... 240 duration exhaust cam used as an intake cam. judging by the previous owners' other workmanship and by the gnarly idle, they didn't use adjustable gears, they just advanced it 4 teeth.

this car runs balls dick ass rich, all of the time. like, spits gas out the exhaust, 12mpg, black bumper rich. it's not in limp mode because it revs out fine, it just runs terrible in general. stalls on warm-up and occasionally at idle, sputters at cruise, all types of fun stuff.

the O2 sensor was bad so I replaced/rewired it, and replaced the CLT sensor and did the plugs, as well as used cleaner on the MAF and IAC. about a month later it won't even start in the cold, so I'm about to do the plugs again since they're probably fouled already, as well as wires, cap, rotor, and PCV.

before I keep throwing tune-up parts at it, my question is, is it going to keep running like trash no matter what I do since it's untuned? I'm beginning to feel like just getting an SAFC and trying to tune the richness out would get me further than messing with all this mechanical stuff, because it's running FAR worse than a KA otherwise would, weak spark or not.

you need adjustable cam gears. it sounds like there is too much overlap and you're dumping the mixture out the exhaust before it gets a chance to burn completely.

if you don't want to change the cam back to stock, at least go through the basics like doing a compression/leakdown test, check the timing, etc....

Yep, sounds like a serious cam timing issue. I would put money on it. Probably makes no power either.

If youve checked everything else fuel related meaning making sure you dont have leaking o-rings on the injectors or anything like that then yeah, bigtime cam timing issue.

I have done the hot cam swap om multiple ka's without adj gears with great sucess to me it sounds like the cam is a couple teeth off or mabe just one tooth off but it is deffinately off

Keep in mind the stock timing mark is not used for hot cam swap if you use stock marks you will bend valves

Yes adj gears properly set will make more power but not enough to compensate for time and money spent
