So hey guys, I'm having a tiny bit of trouble getting my s13 SR20DET motor to time 100% correctly. From what i've gathered so far, mechanically, my motor is timed 100% correct. As in, I've got the chain guides to line perfectly with the dots ont he CAMs, (intake 10 o'clock, exhaust 1-2 O'clock) with the crank pulley lined up to the notch to the second to the left with piston 1 all the way up. I put my CAS in lining it up with the 2 notches on the gear. When im putting the CAS in, i line up the notch on the CAS with the notch to the right on the gear. when i slide the CAS in, the notch moves and lines up, with the notch on the left. Now when im adjusting the timing, i cant quite seem to get the timing of the motor with the crank pulley with the second notch tot he right. The motor runs perfect if im about 5-10 degrees advanced. if i line it up to where the motor is supposed to be timed at, with the second notch to the right on the crank pulley, the motor has no power and feels sluggish. Anything i can do to fix this?

you switch, between adjusting timing and idle.
I mean if your setting timing in timing mode or through consult, your idle can't be 1100rpm. adjust idle down then adjust timing, repeat if necessary.

that's my interpretation of your issue.
you could have other or completely different issues going on.

ya my idle usually sits around 1100. if i set the timing to the second notch on the right on the crank pulley, then it idles about 800, and feels sluggish when i drive it.

Make sure the idle is at 750 when you are adjusting the CAS by hand when the motor is in timing mode. Not at 1100 RPMS.

You'll want to warm the engine up to get proper idle. IIRC, you're suppose to disconnect the TPS sensor and rev it up to 3K three times. Then set timing to 15* BTDC. My SR idles steady at 850 rpm. I think 750 rpm is for the KA.

I know for a KA u need to unplugg the TPS, but is this the same for SR? I know the KA has the distributor and the SR has the CAS.

Wanna know a cool secret

seriously

it makes zero difference if your idle is 200 or 2000

assuming your have the chain installed correctly (mechanical timing) you can easily set mechanical timing as follows:

Turn car on. Get some heat in it/take it to operating temp.

Put timing light on car. As in, put power/ground on the battery, and crimp the inductive signal. Coil Pack/Timing Loop/Spark Plug wire, etc etc. This applies to all nissans

Loosen bottom CAS bolt all the way. Loosen top bolt enough to hold the cas for adjustment, but allow movement. Ya know.

Anywho, get the timing light on the crank pulley --- Crank pulley Marks: -5/0/5/10/15/20

As you have the timing light affixed on the crank pulley and marker, take your free hand to the throttle body and rev your engine up to 4000 or so. Once you release the Rev's, watch the timing light bounce around. Then towards the VERY end of the rev down you'll notice the timing light fixate/get steady/stop bouncing around (you'll hear the engine change tone with this happens too). Anyhow, watch your light and see where it 'settles' as it's revving down. What you want to do, is match the light to the 0* mark (yes, the zero mark...not the 10, not the 15, not the -5, but the ZERO mark) which is second from the left. Rev it again, and watch where it goes. Adjust case until the decel 'settles' on 0* mark.

What happens, is that as your engine de-revs, the ECU locks timing to 15*/stock. If you have the cas set properly to 15* base, you will have the light match right up on the zero/0 mark at this same time.

No need for idle mode, no need for consult, no need for rubbing the valve cover and or singing the rye whiskey song like JimTom, just follow the above and be amazed as to HOW EASY setting timing is.

Take it for what you wish. I'll make a video someday soon to help everyone out.

Dude, make a video now! haha. I want to see this!

He forgot to mention he has, BC 264 CAMS, BC springs, BC valve retainers..... I am not sure if this will effect timing or not.

My experience with BC has always been a negative one. Poor quality control, and poor product. The only reason they are still in business is because cheap people own these cars and don't like to spend money on good parts.
