well, i thought about it tonight and think i might go a little bigger then the viscuous LSD, so what options do i have? what would be recommended for a daily driven, sometimes track, sr powered car?

I vote helical, only because I own one and can get them from Japan regularly. It's immediate power transfer and torque multiplication on the bias vs. really fast lockup with mechanical/clutch lsd. They are not good for drifting though, because if you lift one wheel, torque transfer doesn't happen.. it simply acts like an open diff. Some say they are the best for drag/street/course racing. Mechanical are also fairly noisy (I'm told).

how about cusco 1.5 way? if you are into autoX.
for drift tomei technical trax would be nice. literally you cant go wrong with kaaz or cusco or even ats.

how much more of a benefit is the tomei over say a viscuous LSD?

tomei is clutch-type mechanical lsd, where vlsd is not.

VLSD sucks imo. Lots of lag before binding, ect. Viscous in our cars are sealed, so once they run out of "grippy-goo", you've got an open diff. Mechanical clutch-type can be rebuilt.

Kaaz 2-way LSD is awesome for drift if you are looking for a drift type unit. High quality components and drop in clutch-type unit makes it a "cant go wrong" unit. but those retail now for 995, but you can find them for 895, Or maybe even cheaper!

If you plan to get a tomei, just get a kaaz. Kaaz makes it for Tomei. One of the same. Both great products.

I have Nismo. I like Nismo. Nismo is OEM quality and from what i am told by friends who race and drift in japan, the Nismo and TRD units (made in the same place) are the only ones that did not need a rebuild after a full race/drift season. The performance was not effected and usually go at least 1.5-2x longer than most other brands without needing rebuild. But that is just heresay since i actually havent experienced it firsthand.
Nismo is good for street too once properly broken in. My SSS hardly makes any noise whatsoever.
ATS is pimp so is Deftforce and shit. Tomei and Kaaz are good too. I mean they are all good. And a lot of them have a whole shitload of clutches and engage stupid fast (like Deftforce mmmm) but ask yourself whether you need all that and then if you for some reason need a part, who carries Deftforce or ATS in the states? Kaaz and Tomei i guess would be the best for the US support. Nismo not bad cause everything Nismo is available through dealers in the US but damn i can't imagine the prices....

curious, does the nismo unit need 'special' gear oil like tomei and kaaz? or just the regular ones or the synchmesh ones...

I know you just said it's hearsay, so you don't have experience with the TRD units, but supposedly these units don't handle that much power. A couple of my hachi buddies blew theirs running the supercharged 4ag-ze motors. I'm kind of skeptical cuz I'm running the same motor set up.

how difficult of an install is this anyway? is it possible to do it myself or is there a place around NYC that can professionally do it?

After all of the reading I have done, I finally decided on the Cusco RS.
It seems to be a fairly quite on the street and excellent on the track.

most all LSDs do more then job and are great
nismo
kaaz
cusco
ats
tomei
etc etc
i too have a NISMO..NISMO SSS
now it is replaced by the GT PRO (same type of unit--same functions)
top quality
NISMO and CUSCO were the only to last a full gymkhana season without rebuild
oil..i use synthetic...REDLINE
my friends use REDLINE too
KAAZ have to use Non-synthetic
same with tomei
not sure about other units
anywyas..good luck
get 1.5 is best for street/some track use...very streetable
and great on track too, dont diss because its not 2 way
1.5 is more versitile i think...some people like it for drifting more then 2 way
its preference

another question regarding that NISMO lsd,
it seems like the one sold on stateside has part #38420-RS661 (clutch type) sold for ~700-800 and the one sold in japan per NISMO website has part #38420-RSS15-xx (GT PRO) and has msrp ~1000
what's the difference?
Dousan_PG

GT PRO
racing LSD
1.5 and 2 way adjsutable WITH DISSASEMBLY
(meaning take the LSD unit apart and rearrange)
but 3 way adjsutable torque breakaway which can be adjusted inunder a 1/2 hour
if you dont undersatnd what i just typed, this is NOT THE LSD FOR YOU

huh? must've missed something on the conversation?
so..
the nismo gtpro sounds great and all, but to disassemble lsd to adjust 1.5 to 2 and vice versa sounds like too much work, and the breakaway adjustability feature sounds like it's nice to have but not sure how often people actually tinker with it (is it basically how fast or slow the lsd will engage depending on how you adjust it? so this is more useful to those who actually goes on different types of tracks)
the other nismo clutch type sold stateside seems like it's the cheapest out of kaaz, cusco, tomei.. and doesn't require 'special' gear oil,
it seems like it's only 2 way? do they have 1.5 way?
Dousan_PG
03-31-2004, 05:37 PM
i say go with a KAAZ (new version) and 1.5 way
why?
KAAZ is in USA
you can use any non-syn oil (valvoline is cheap!)
KAAZ has excellent USA support
doesnt require output shafts (drop into open diff)
install is cheap (so cali can get it done by KAAZ =---full install---250) or just drop off your pumpkin and get installed for under 80 dollars
KAAZ is a excellent unit
