View Full Version : I want to put big mudding tires on my S13...What offset should i get fo wheels?

I work at Toyota and can get tires for $5 over cost, and I need some Super Swampers!
I have already fabricated and installed a three inche suspension lift and mounted 205/70/15 tires in the rear and 205/65/15 tires in the front. I have a all around ground clearance of 13-14" and I want more. I am going to cut out my rear fender wells a little and fabricate some kind of splash shield so i can keep my rear 1/4 panels from flapping around and letting mud and water into the interior. I will more than likely be getting 28 or 29" Swampers for the rear and probably keep the same tires up front that i have now.
Now my question is What kind of offset would bring the hub of the wheel realy far inward almost so that it was even with the inner lip of the wheel. I want these babies to stick way so i can fling mud up at my friends and have much cooler pictures to show people.
Okay i am ready for it....Kill Me!
P.S. 240sx's are badass offroad...I only got stuck twice and the first time I filled the interior with three inches of water and the second time I framed out in some rutts.

zero offset
I thought that zero offset meant that the hub would be in the middle of the wheel.
Hopefully my friend will be e-mailing me the pictures soon!

no hub mounting surface will be even with back edge of rim. negative offset means it sits behind that

Dude, you're nucking futs! :tweak:

Nope, offset is measured from the wheel centerline. With a 7" rim, you'd need like -75 offset :faint: ...good luck finding anything near that.

are you sure? i thought 0 offset was where the hub was exactly in the middle of the rim. negative would make it closer to the inside lip, positive would make it closer to the outside.?? is that wrong?
misnomer

Wow dood, nuts. I gotta see pictures. Do you have an LSD? How is the traction?

That's what he meant, with a negative offset the hub mounting surface would sit behind that (that being the 0 offset point). Positive offset means the hub mounting surface would sit ahead of the 0 offset point.
You can get some wheels in sick negative offsets here (http://www.eaglewheels.com/028.htm).
Another idea is to buy some high offset 2-piece wheels (like off eBay or something) and flip the face around. :coold:

rock on :rawk:
If I can find another set of wheels I am getting some M&S rated or rally tires mounted on them. http://www.uswheel.com/ has some really cheap 4 lug steel wheels with 0 offset, they should be strong and cheap enough for off road duty.
PICS!!!!! of your setup or action shots!!!
Ever tried rallycross? If you like offloading your 240, you might want to try and find a rallycros region near you, its lots of fun.

I've never seen a 240 at rallyx... when I had my WRX wagon I took it out there it's pretty damn fun!!! When do we get to see pics of your project?

Sorry guys my friend with the camera is being lazy as hell, so no pics yet.
I am using my stock 15x6 steelies right now and since i still have my open differential I was doing the one wheel boogie most of the time, but my 240 wanted to get through just about everything i put her in.
There was this one mud pit that had like a constant 4" thick layer of mud around a 50' diameter circle. But in the middle was a hole about 6' deep. Me and the two toher trucks were doing some crazy close drifting around that hole and i almost ran up under the tacoma w/ a 9" lift due to my wiper motors not being strong enough to move three inch thick layers of mud from the windshield.
On the way out of the forest there is a huge woop section with three foot hills (about twenty of them) for a 1/8 mile or so and i could have swore my axles were going to break then but she kept on truckin. By the time i got to the highway my KA wouldn't rev over 1500 rpm, because my airfilter was completely clogged. I had to shut her off and saw a huge hole in my cone filter to let it run. But the car runs perfect now.
Future plans:
Full underbody skidplate (to keep the water out of my engine
Sick negative offset 15" wheels
31" Super Swamper Bogger tires http://www.intercotire.com/interco_tsl_bogger-600.jpg
Air filter snorkel
Drivers seat that isn't broken (so i don't keep falling into the back seat)
Figure out some way of getting more powerful wiper motors
EDIT: I forgot to mention a cheap LSD
EDIT: If i really get hardcore about this mudding thing Maybe figure out a way to use an all-wheel drivetrain
Hopefully i will have pictures soon...I will bug my friend until he loads them.
Thanks for all the props and I hope I have encouraged others with multiple 240's to try new things!

Wow aren't you guys pushy! Somewthing must have happened when my friend sent me the pictures, but he is going to resend them to me in a larger size. They may not be perfectly clear, because they were taken with a camera phone but they will do the trick.
I opened up my door today and i almost passed out it smelt so bad in there. I had to take out the carpeting from the interior and throw it away, and there were a few pools of shiot water left under the carpet...but all is better now.
I have measured from the center of my hub 15 1/2" out and marked on the rear fenders were i should cut, so I should definitly be able to fit 31" Super Swamper TSL's on the rear and keep the 205/65/15's up front.
I also took off the front bumper and two front fenders. The bumper was acting like a dive fin whenever i would hit a water hole. It would just pull the front end under the water. I am going to bend some thick piece of sheet metal into a nice skid plat that will help me skip across the water holes .
Oh one last thing for now...When i get these huge tires on the rear it will be A LOT of extra weight so I should get a higher ratio differential. What compatable LSD has the highest ratio?
Okay i lied one more thing...Just for the time being I will have to do something drastic in the rear. I am really cheap right now so instead of getting negative offset rims, i am going to turn my rims inside out. To do this I will have to disconnect the rear calipers. So here lies the question...What do you think is safer? Putting a large piece of metal (the same thickness as the rear rotor) in between the two pads and fully compress the pads against the metal, then use a lot of zip ties to keep everythin gin place, then zip tie the caliper out of the way somewhere...OR disconnecting the brake line from the caliper and triing to find some kind of plug to keep fluid from leaking out.
DISCUSS...

Hmmmm... interesting dilemma... neither one sounds ideal....
My worries would be the metal coming loose during rough driving, but tryin to find an appropriate plug will be difficult, I think...
I think, however, that turning the rim "inside out" is definately not a good idea. I don't know if it was designed to handle the stress in that manner...

whoa! flipping stock wheels? disconnecting the brakes? I am poor too, but that doesn't mean I am going to fuckup my car.
here are some decent wheels that only cost $41 http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=USW%2D97%2D5744 they are 15x7 wheels 4x114.3 bolt pattern and -6 offset, should be just fine for muddin if the link doesn't work, go to summitracing.com and put in part number USW-97-5744

damn , that seems like a good deal. Flipping the wheel inside out was just an idea a friend gave me, and I might have done it but probably not. But for $40 I will more than likely get these unless someone else can find somethin gcheaper....
I will get working on those larger pics

that thing is awsome!! looks like fun.
When i first started reading I was waiting for the flaming, then i realized something was off, and checked the date.
Its unfortunate that now days that guy would be shit talked off the forum for wanting to have some fun with a 20 year old car that cost $1500.00.
People act like theres some sort of shortage of 240's now days!
