So I’ve had my S15 for a couple of years now, and after viewing this site for a few years i finally got around to joining.

Purchased mechanically stock with typical retard mods of neons & clear tail lights - which were promptly removed/disabled (Not all bad however - came with a pretty decent $2000+ pro installed Alpine stereo).

Having modified a 200sx before (I had a S14a back in the 90’s) i had a fair idea of what i was after & how to achieve it – responsive usable power - so with this in mind i set about modifying.

Engine:

Camtech billet VCT Camshafts 260/260 10.5mm/10.5mm
Garrett GT28/71 52t - 400hp turbo
Speedflow oil / coolant lines
Sard 550cc Injectors
Z32 afm
Nistune ECU
Turbosmart plumb back BOV
Blitz Dual ID boost controller
3" exhaust
300x600x76 intercooler setup
Walbro fuel pump
wide band AFR meter
Oil catch can
k&N air filter

This combo ended up putting out 294rwhp / 220rwkw @ 16psi boost

Wheels:

Work Meister S1 3P - 18x8 & 18x9

Suspension:

HKS Hypermax III coil overs

why is this labeled vq30det s15 with a sr20det in it?

I am so excited for this! I just purchased a VQ35, but the VQ30DET is an awesome engine that I wish we could get more easily in the states!

So confused

12-08-2012, 04:58 PM
Sorry guys, new member here so my posts still need to be approved.

So the SR20 was fantastic for a while, almost zero lag and a good street setup.

But I got bored.

So in a moment of weakness I bought one of these:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-m0_0r9-yUVI/UHOz11TXiTI/AAAAAAAABxA/ogRoJhF4OJ4/s1024/Cima%2520%25282%2529.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-84ttF9tOyZM/UHOz5inVgkI/AAAAAAAABxY/Kan7_W56Pqo/s1024/Cima%2520%25283%2529.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bdv6ct6OHlM/UHO0BosZIfI/AAAAAAAAByA/2VIoICky-oo/s1024/Cima%2520%25285%2529.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XILQD_zTpjo/UHOzv5XMcbI/AAAAAAAABww/X6SYO0ykpvc/s1024/Cima%2520%25281%2529.JPG

VQ30DET Y33 Cima front cut with a genuine 26,000km on the clock.

And then the conversion started.

First of all I sorted out the ECU, decided to go for a Nistune setup, as the car is a streetcar with A/C, P/S decided that the stock ECU modified would be the best plan.

After around 12 hours work using multiple wiring diagrams (removing body loom, airbag loom etc) , wiring = sorted

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_hlYRup7bIv4/TQoY0DsQX_I/AAAAAAAAAdI/CLCCBCJGQNk/s640/photo.jpg

Then had some of these made up so hold the engine and transmission in place:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-VwpVsleieAA/Ts7tWzxsMcI/AAAAAAAABI4/7-z5VWLAOno/s1020/IMG_8565.jpg

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-AX49bUW77Xw/Ts7tZz5qyKI/AAAAAAAABJA/4g4l07e5GME/s1020/IMG_8567.jpg

Then SR20DET came out and real work started:

SR20DET and wiring loom came out and work started on installing new valve springs and 265 deg cams into the VQ30DET.

Anyways, pix of progress.

SR20 out - served me well, off to live a new life in a Datsun 200B coupe

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-V4VF0T4EU9M/TxNlUrVVLUI/AAAAAAAABQY/r2Vw5haAnic/s720/IMAG0121.jpg

So then I decided that I wanted to chuck a set of cams in it.

All covers and accessories off and cams out - so much crap to come off to get the sticks out

Valve springs all installed, cams are in & engine completely back together:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-yeBd7s2J3Yc/Tx1dyQDSrSI/AAAAAAAABS4/iCNMQF3Rt4E/s720/IMAG0144.jpg

Also received my modified wiring loom back from being merged with the S15 engine / ABS loom – 100% plug in (with ABS, A/C, P/S and parts of the S15 body loom run as per OEM (ie, front left indicator))

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ZzsmFZTcS8k/Tx1ck-8JmJI/AAAAAAAABSk/P9FQf06omew/s720/IMAG0141.jpg

Then made a 350Z gearbox work with the VQ30DET

350Z gearshifter mounts way to far back to be used in an 'S' chassis car, to bring it back to a usable position I cut reshaped and rewelded the shifter base 80mm closer to the gearbox.

First job was to remove the gear shifter linkage and weld both ends together - basically removing the 80mm length as pictured in vice

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-M2GMejwdN-Q/TyJxZcYCPPI/AAAAAAAABTE/GowYgdObzrc/s720/IMAG0145.jpg

Then started on the shifter bracket. Drilled a series of holes in around the position i wanted to move the shifter base to.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-eWVtsbCNkOg/TyJxgMMmsRI/AAAAAAAABTM/hxH854b887g/s720/IMAG0147.jpg

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-lyKaA7_kcvA/TyJxllpTw0I/AAAAAAAABTU/au9xZwveC8Q/s720/IMAG0148.jpg

Then removed the shifter base, file finished both shifter base and bracket then positioned everything where it needed to be and took to OKE020 to weld (cheers Scott).

And now all finished (minus reverse lockout plate).

Tighter than a nuns nasty lowering it in but once on the mounts sits quite nicely.

Clutch and flywheel installed and box bolted on - ready for deployment.

And finally, running!!

Idle, 14.7:1 on the meter - loving those cams, sounds infinitely different than a stock cam VQ30 (230 deg Vs 265 & about another 1mm lift)

kmHrGNTWqaw

So that’s it’ that’s where im up to – 10 months so far in the build.

Thanks for reading.

Did you use mild steel for the exhaust manifolds? You're probably going to want to coat that with something, mild steel rusts SO fast.

psi999
12-08-2012, 05:13 PM
Cast mild steel 'steam pipe' bends, super thick wall so dont think i'll have rusting problems (haven't in the past)

Oh yes the driveshaft, forgot about that -I had it made in Texas and shipped to Australia

Next piece of the puzzle complete - the tailshaft.

What a pain. Turns out an aftermarket 350Z slip yoke is almost unobtainum, even in the US - so an aftermarket tailshaft was going to be an interesting proposition.

Most guys solve this lack of aftermarket support by cutting the staked uni slip joint off a standard 350Z tailshaft - and try and find someone who will put it back together on a new shaft (which they shouldnt - one time use part).

Not particularly keen on this idea i went hunting....

After spending a number of weeks trawling the net for a better solution i stumbled across a drivshaft supplier in San Antonio Texas that claimed to build a aluminum tailshaft suit 350Z using all new parts.

We exchanged quite a few emails and they were happy to send me parts to have it all made here - but in the end decided to have it all made there as even with shipping included (which the driveshaft store organised, at a fairly substantial discount over retail) the shaft worked out at just over half the price of what it would cost to have made here, which seems freaking crazy being made half a world away ....but it still gets better.

I ordered and paid for the Driveshaft 8:30am Friday morning (Brisbane time) and arrived 9am this morning (wednesday) - 3 business days to be custom made to my specs, balanced, packaged and sent half a world away - i dont think i could even have a drive shaft made locally and shipped in that kind of time.

So from San Antonio to Dallas then Kentucky, Honolulu, Tokyo, Sydney and finally onto Brisbane - it arrived, and here it is.

Cheers guys, really happy with how it turned out.

About 2 years in the planning before the SR was pulled just working out where i was going to put everything (and not hack the car up in the process).

Anyways, a little more progress - i've just installed a header tank.

Top of the motor sits above the top of radiator so hoping to prevent cracked heads i fitted up a small header tank (which sits around 3 inches higher than the radiator).

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-3US79pjhWgM/UMQYyt3bjDI/AAAAAAAAB64/tPpSNxx1S88/s912/20121209_144846.jpg

Now holds a perfect 88C (190F) :D

Amazing build. Looking forward to more video. Is this a street car or will it see track time (grip/drift)?

Street car but it'll see a bit of time at the strip and i'm rather keen to take it for a go at our local raceway (Queensland Raceway).

Built the car to be a bit of an all rounder, street legal (DOT engineered, blue plate in above pic) but still do OK at the track.

Hi psi999,

I am also in process of swapping a vq30det, but in to an A31 Cefiro as an all round fun car, streetable still with air con, but will enter drift, grip, and drag events so will have a 4 seater roll cage (like Chris Forsberg Infiniti M56). Your very nicely done built really inspired me to continue with my build. Have some questions for you :
What cams and springs do you use? Jim Wolf?
Is your turbo a Master Power T70? Journal of ball bearing? what a/r? when dos it start spooling?

Thanks,

Rian

Cheers Rian, sounds like you have similar aims as i do (Indonesia - you need A/C too!!)

Have you any pics of your setup?...

Springs - Yes - Jim wolf VQ30DE springs, if you want to rev your VQ30 these are mandatory. VQ30DET's are known to drop valves at 8000rpm due to soft 'luxo car' springs.

In pics, these are the springs (and compressor, which dosen't fit a VQ30DET perfectly - you need to run a little tape over the supplied bucket as the VQ35 buckets are larger).

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-VqXze4AE88c/TwlpIpjASvI/AAAAAAAABOU/Rs6Dayea4LI/s720/IMAG0441.jpg

Cams

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-29Vt-dC8_jA/TwlqAWg8f2I/AAAAAAAABOQ/N1lk_2pODec/s720/IMAG0442.jpg

But these are not a bolt in affair - you need to have adaptors made to space the cams out, basically VQ35 cams are slightly shorter so to make all the timing gear line up you need to space it out

Cheers guys,

VQ30DET isn't available locally in Australia either, my engine came in a front cut from Japan.

I can't understand why more people dont use them, make so much mose sense than either a rb or jz cast iron engine.

Yeah I think it's mostly because we can get basically every other engine separate. A half cut is a lot more expensive.

After reading your post I did a quick search, and found this. Since the company is based in Texas when I go home for the holidays I will check this out. I was hoping to find a vq30 and turbo it, but this looks whole lot better. Just my 2 bits!

Should be tuning this week or next so hopefully updates will be flowing :D

Yeah I think it's mostly because we can get basically every other engine separate. A half cut is a lot more expensive.

I paid $1200AUD for the cut (so roughly $1250USD), so very cost effective to buy a complete cut.

but that said a friend bought a bare VQ30DET to drop into his 910 Datsun for $300, runs 10.7 @ 128.

Funny old place Australia, as we have such easy access to Jap engines there are plenty of weird and wacky conversions around.

Just a note, my motor is a Y33 Cima motor, that motor is a Y34 (Neo) - I think i might have a wiring diagram for that but absolutely have a spot on Y33 diagram.

Also, if you are going to use the auto, make sure they include the auto ECU, its separate from the engine ECU and many forget to include it.

Not at all, happy to provide any assistance you need :D

Makes me happy more people are considering these engines, lot more difficult than a RB or to some extent a JZ conversion but a VQ being only around 20kgs heavier than a SR20DET and mounted further back it can only be a good thing :D

Also looks like a VQ35DE 4.2L stroked kit will work on a VQ30DET block as well so a decent capacity increase is available if warranted :)

Cheers Rian, sounds like you have similar aims as i do (Indonesia - you need A/C too!!)

Yes, A/C is a must without A/C it will be a sauna in the car in mid day, can reach over 40 degrees celsius in it. I am still in parts gathering stage so no pics yet, already have :
vq30det engine
vg30 trans
r33 gtst front brakes (installed)
s15 sr20det complete subframe, rear suspension arms, rear brakes, axles, only missing the r200 diff (plans to upgrade to r32/33 gtr diff, axles and hubs)
Custom Garrett based turbo with 67 mm comp inducer (T04R or T04Z) in ported comp housing and p trim turbine in t3 twin scroll 0.70 a/r turbine housing
Turbosmart 45 mm wastegate
Turbosmart Raceport bOV
Intercooler 600mm x 300 mm x 76 mm with 3 inch in/out
3 row radiator
ISC coilovers (installed)
OMP TRS bucket seats and sliders
Dished steering wheel, Nardi I think
Aeromotive Stealth 340 lph fuel pump

Parts ordered :
Microtech LT 16 ecu for vq30det
NRG quick release

Parts to get/made :
Flywheel and clutch kit
Engine to trans adaptor
Driveshaft
Suspension arms, anti roll bars, bushings and super angle kit
Fuel system (injectors, fpr, fuel tank, fuel rail)
r32/33 gtr aftermarket clutch lsd
4/5 point seatbelts
4 seater rollcage
Rollcage padding
Oil cooler
Expecting many more parts will need to be acquired

Car still daily driven by me with its tired rb20e. Still a long way to go.

The cam spacer you made goes to between the cam and the timing gear/sprocket? or to the back of the cam?

Thanks psi

I can't understand why more people dont use them, make so much mose sense than either a rb or jz cast iron engine.

vq30det is jdm only.

Here people are swapping the usual engines, sr20det, rb20det, rb25det, 1jzgte, 2jzgte, and a few 1uzfe also 4g63t, mostly into A31 Cefiro as it is the last and only rwd sedan platform we get for mass sale aside from luxury brands such as BMW, Mercedes, and the likes. We love Ceffys here, you can see in Speedhunters Formula Drift Asia Jakarta for some drift action here.

I think of vq30det as almost perfect combination of 2jz displacement, torque, power, strength with sr20det lightweight and weight disribution.

However it is not well known and only came in auto, so must spend more to get manual set up. Also for USA where vq35de+ manual trans (vq, vg, rb trans works) is relatively easily available, I think using a vq35de is an equally good alternative to using vq30det. Yes vq30det is ready to handle boost from Nissan (just look at the Aussie r32 swap with vq30det + t04z turbo, 500 whp with stock vq30det engine), but no manual trans. Vq35de you readily get manual trans in USA, internal parts to upgrade are also plentiful.

Cheers mate, just been chipping away at it - try and spend a couple of hours on it every other night.

Actually while I’m thinking about it, if it helps anyone this is how the plenum was modified to fit the engine bay

In both height and rear space.

Plenum ‘mid’ manifold was cut, milled flat and welded, needed around an inch out of it to allow the hood to close.

Nice work, sounds like its going to have all the right bits…. Going to be a skid machine!

Cam spacer goes between the cam gear and cam, basically if you intend in using a VQ35 spec cam you will need a spacer.

I’m sure you already know this but you do know the Z33 gearbox bolts up to the VQ30DET, but can understand why you have gone the Z32 route (being a fair bit stronger).

Also on a side note I’d check and confirm that the LT16 ECU will be able to run the VQ30, very few ECU’s can run it out of the box (only one I can think of is an Adaptronic which has a special VQ30 mode).

To get most ECU’s to run you will need to shave all but one of the ‘slots’ off the cam gear, this combined with the crank pickup should work.

Stock the cam gear has the following slots.

I, II, III, IIII, IIIII, IIIII

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-knSrn3Uml5k/Tx1dqJRk1KI/AAAAAAAABSw/sD_ouTOC5Bs/s720/IMAG0142.jpg

Did you have any thoughts around using the stock ECU with Nistune? – while I haven’t tuned my car as yet it has been fantastic so far, works great with the idle solenoid, cams, 1000cc injectors and a 90mm Ford Lightning supercharged V8 MAF.

I know Microtech products fairly well as I had a LT8 on one of my older cars, love the hand controller.

Fantastic build!
I'm doing a vq35de swap at the moment and i'm using
Mc-kinney mounts.
I'm not happy with how te engine sits in the enginebay.
Can you post some beter pictures how it fits the bay?
And any chance i can buy the mounts you have made!?

Keep on the good work

Haha its funny how many people take a look at my bay and automatically think it’s a VG30, VQ30 is such an unknown motor :D

The engine bay is tight, but everything has its place so its not too bad to work on.

Pretty much everything can be got to easily by the top or underneath.

The manifold is fairly tight too, and being cast iron will never, ever crack :D

Oh cheers mate, I thought I recognised the username. Performanceforums.com is my ‘home’ forum so the complete history of my build is there.

Few drift cars in Australia fitted with VQ30’s but as far as I’m aware mine is the first S15 to be done. I know of one other S15 in NZ being fitted with a VQ30 as well.

So much work required so it’s not really for the faint hearted. A JZ/RB conversion would have been infinitely simpler (but not as cool!!).

Cheers mate!

I looked at the mc-kinney mounts before I settled with mine – what don’t you like about their kit?

I’m very happy with my mounts but they took some time to come, I sourced them from New Zealand and took around 8 months from order placement to delivery. If you are on a tight timeframe they may not be the mounts for you (were also rather expensive, but I believe the quality was well worth it).

I can certainly ask for you.

As for other engine bay pics, what specifically are you after? – I posted a few bare engine pics on the first page, if that’s no help let me know what you are after.

As you can see the engine is sideways and i have to do a lot of tricks to line the crank in the center of the car
I think your engine has a better fit than mine

---

Anyways I have updates! – The car has officially hit the road.

So I decided to see if it would drive on the weekend, ended up doing about 130 miles of road tuning (in 95F heat so about as hot as it'll ever see :D)

No leaks, no bangs, no rattles & still handles well (feels like no weight has been added at all) - everything worked as it should.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-4Rv77OWYGIA/UM2z2AWSLxI/AAAAAAAAB9o/EtAW3QmEtiI/s912/20121216_154131.jpg

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-JfmR3cjqdGc/UM2tlmhEz3I/AAAAAAAAB9Q/nUm8T1ZlIoI/s912/20121216_164003.jpg

Tune wise most cruise is now sorted - idle will need a fair bit of work but we seem to be making positive progress (so many idle parameters in Nistune, once its sorted it will be perfect).

Initially we weren't going to tune for boost but ended up seeing 14psi - think its going to go OK ;)

The turbo sound freaking magic as it spools and gearing is just about perfect to rip through the gears to keep it spooled . Talking of which I’m in love with the 350Z box, perfect ratios and feels so positive... just all round awesomeness.

Will need to go see exhaust man about a couple of mufflers though, its loud enough to wake the dead.

This is the finished engine bay with all systems now hooked up.

Simply amazing. Quality work, great creativity. I wasn't even aware this motor existed until now. Please post some in-car action vids and fly bys. We need to hear this baby rawr.

+1 on the HP/TQ ratings, or at least goals.

Also, could you PM me the name of the shop in TX were you got the driveshaft made? Thanks.

You need a flywheel spacer I believe.

no need for a spacer (not in my case atleast). The only hurdle in bolting it up is the vq30 has a 180 tooth flywheel timing ring (different from a 350z)

notchtops14

the vq30det is automatic so it should not have a flywheel... I ben reading that you have to use 350z flywheel and clutch combo

i have a VQ30DET sitting in my coupe right now...350z transmission, JWT flywheel, RPS clutch. You will need a 180 tooth flywheel timing ring and a shortened shifter mount or a 350z nismo flywheel with the vq30det flex plate

someone please tell me where i can get this timing ring from? or how i can swap the timing ring from auto flex plate to 350z flywheel..

Nismo 350z flywheel, stock VQ30DET automatic flex plate.

unbolt the timing ring on 350z flywheel and bolt on VQ30DET flex plate.

Job done in under 5 minutes.

Edit , because im a nice guy :D

Nissan, deciding to be carnts built the ECU timing ring into the flywheel (this along with front pulley & cam sensor – ECU then takes all 3 readings). Stock automatic this is not a problem but converting to manual = dramas.

Most people that convert to manual (VQ30DET was never available with a manual trans) also convert to an aftermarket ECU – as I wanted to stick with factory injection I had to somehow retain this 360 tooth timing ring (which is built into the automatic flexplate)

Few people have gone down this path before – usually purchasing a 350z fidanza alloy flywheel which has a removable timing ring (as the VQ35 and VQ30 have different tooth counts) - then having water cut VQ30 timing ring made to bolt to the fidanza flywheel…. Or VQ20DE flywheel and run a smaller clutch (fail).

After many hours research I stumbled across a few small pics of the Nismo 350Z flywheel which happened to look very much like an automatic flexplate bolted a flywheel.

After searching for days and days I could not locate a decent picture so decided to order one (with my fingers crossed)…. And as suspected – 4 bolts off comes the 350z starter / timing ring and straight bolt on the VQ30DET automatic flex plate :D

Just letting you know i joined this forum to say Hi!

I saw your videos on YouTube the other week and absolutely loved your swap. So Awesome! Glad I found the build thread, will defiantly follow this!

I’m ashamed to admit i started a VQ conversion 2 years ago but has been slow going. ie, super slow to nonexistent. I recently got some modervation and mocked up some pipes and hope to spend some more of my time working on her..

Was keeping the stock turbo, doing a 3.5’ exhaust
Got 440cc s15 injectors
Xf TB (like yours?) I modified for s13 TPS with a modified/low intake manafold
Close rad setup and IC in the rad support panel.
Not keeping the AC or anything like that as it’s not my daily and rarely gets driven.

I’d love to pick your brain about all the VQ questions I have, if you wouldn’t mind swapping emails or something?

Beautiful! Not sure how I missed this thread. I'm a huge VQ30DET fan. I always thought the it was the perfect engine for an S-chassis swap. If I ever get enough money/skills to do one, I certainly will. But in the meantime, I think I'll settle for a VG30ET powered Z31. So cheap its like cheating.

Hey,

I'm super lazy with this build, so the blog/thread I started when i was keen and starting the builds have not been maintained.

The inter-cooler is a generic 450 x 300 x 76mm with 3" Outlets.
Its mounted up in the radiator support panel, with 3inch piping on the cold side and 2.5inch piping on the hot side.

The radiator is a cheap aluminium one for a Holden commodore, i cant remember exactly what year, but i think they are all pretty generic though out 1990-2000.
The filler has been removed, and one has been placed on the Vq's rad hard-line.
it has the right location and size top hose, but the bottom hose is in the right location but is slightly larger, so some sort of adapter need to be made.
Using this because of its dimentions, its actually pretty small comepared to a s13 radiator - its similar to a z32 radiator, but the z32 is taller and is to awkward to fit in the limited space.

if you have any further questions, just ask - happy to talk vq all day, even thos ive never got one running hahaha.

Time for an update from down under :D

Unfortunately Haltech ECU's wont work out of the box on a VQ30DET - easiest way to to resolve this issue is a custom 36-1 trigger wheel.

So i had one machined up.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tTMEK-prLdg/UdbI9m4e3KI/AAAAAAAAETg/ZAJiERNeWqQ/s1273/IMAG0140.jpg

Which ended up as this (interference fit on crank pulley).

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ybjazp70NBk/UbMYg56lRQI/AAAAAAAACRk/f9cS5AIU2WM/s912/20130608_213613.jpg

Then attached with M5 bolts, tooth removed and painted.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-D0O3nyQOvRo/UdaTj1qBtzI/AAAAAAAAES8/ecFj1uh7sUw/s912/20130705_193508.jpg

And finally installed with raised sensor platforms.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XHP62ExesB0/Uda923oF3aI/AAAAAAAAETQ/GNQfp4EjDes/s912/20130705_223515.jpg

Stealth ECU installation... what stand alone. Will be run through the stock wiring loom :D

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-0Kne_ZCFZBI/UdAiDoOZLHI/AAAAAAAAER8/Q9I89QCvlyw/s720/20130630_162656.jpg

And (after lots of late nights) its running.

PkCLKzjKncI

Few little jobs to be sorted including the Idle solenoid - 50/50 chance of wiring it the wrong way, it was the other way :D

I'll also need to check trigger wheel offset (synchronise the ECU) and drop in a new battery, last 6 months sitting around hasn't been kind.

Other than that it all seems to be working as it should -running on all 6 with the worlds shittiest fouled plugs.... Happy Days :D

Also as part of the Haltech install i have also dropped in a flex fuel ethanol sensor - i'll be able to fuel this bad boy up on anything from pump premium unleaded to 100% ethanol and the ECU will adjust boost, timing and fuel maps to suit.

Saving the planet with every top gear skid :D

And after a bit of frigging around with the maps i took it for a ~1.5 hour road test this afternoon - laptop on the passenger seat and started to tune.

Idle sorted, tad high (1000rpm) but its consistent with decent AFR's

D8KxUrXAV70

And a short video of in car.

Few things to fix up, no tacho (wiring/software config - not high on priority list) and idle stepper motor hasn't been touched yet.

More tuning this week :D

Well done, if you need any help feel free to drop me a line :D

Just a note, my motor is a Y33 Cima motor, that motor is a Y34 (Neo) - I think i might have a wiring diagram for that but absolutely have a spot on Y33 diagram.

Also, if you are going to use the auto, make sure they include the auto ECU, its separate from the engine ECU and many forget to include it.

hows it goin bro, i kno this is an older post, but i was wondering if u still had the ECU pinout for the y33? i have a Y34 ,,im still using the stock auto ecu ,i have yet to drop it in because of wiring, i got it to start but it it runs luike its in safe mode (limp mode) which ever term u prefer lol ,, any help would b greatfully appreciated thank u

so in every build i have seen everybody custom makes their intake plenums and does a crazy turbo set up, i am wanting to run stock turbo set up, i am wanting to run factory ecu and turbo set up, is there any clearance issues with turbo manifold "i know the rear exhaust that runs through the back of the motor will be an issue" i am wanting to keep it nice and simple with stock ecu and turbo.. is that possible? by the way it will be going into a usd s13 chassis.. thanks in advance

you have to relocate the turbo no matter what you do. In the stock location the steering shaft runs right thru where that turbo sits. The easiest and cheapest route will be a relocation pipe like the Z31 folks

notchtops14
12-15-2013, 09:12 PM
Damn, so the actual turbo location is the problem, and what pipe you talking about relocating?

db_s13
12-18-2013, 10:56 AM
its not a pipe with the motor but a fabricated piece to move the turbo to a new location...google z31 relocation pipe and you will see an example

You'll run into a lot of problems, you wont fit the stock plenum for a start. I had mine running on the stock ECU for a while, it can be done and was fairly simple :D

As for this thread I have absolutely no updates on this car, other than that i've purchased a set of LS1 coils that are awaiting installation.

What i have been doing is playing with my Datsun 910 bluebird, installing a 1UZFE and 5-speed. I wont bore you all with the details, but will chuck a post up on it anyways :D

Made up some 5mm plates and tacked shit

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-LwGam0-IfWU/UrbAGMO05xI/AAAAAAAAEiI/hyC9_5ddb4w/s720/20131222_135044.jpg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lFFajnNs1A8/Ura_2wCJ-LI/AAAAAAAAEhw/tbCAnMWPy-g/s1024/20131222_142017.jpg

Cut out another 5mm plate for additional strength

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-S-YyEffdgtU/Ura_xCIXBaI/AAAAAAAAEho/-to7f-c2q9g/s1024/20131222_145506.jpg

Then glued it all together

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-33qAK7ABSGY/UrgEFxlTTrI/AAAAAAAAEjA/ZQVorTdt6m4/s1024/20131223_185854.jpg

Next up i fabricated a throttle stay, probably slightly over engineered but i really hate flimsy brackets that most conversions end up with

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-RgzexcZA-tc/UrlkaVLZjxI/AAAAAAAAEjQ/LBXVsla6l0E/s1024/20131224_132159.jpg

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-XydZyQD0e-4/UrlktXaFCII/AAAAAAAAEjw/Gqj3kF_iUzw/s1024/20131224_134924.jpg

I've wanted an Rb seal since I was a teenager and still do but after reading a this info and doing a Google search this swap is definitely quality! Do you know what the total weight of the motor & tranny? Sounds like it is lighter than an Rb (25det w/ tranny) although no one has said so outright.

So ive been driving around the new toy quite a bit :D

Decided to hit up a local annual 'old school' Jap car show mid Feb:

Well i've been driving this heaps, 2-3 times a week and a couple of Mt Nebo/Glorious runs - lots of fun but i'll be needing new tyres soon.

But like always, im hunting for a few more HP so started looking for ways to lean out the fueling.

1UZFE's run insanely rich standard, 10.5 (down to 10.0):1 under load with stock ECU and with some research on more specific Lexus forums leaning from 10.0:1 -> 12.5:1 will gain something in the vicinity of 20rwhp if leaned with a signal bending device.

There are quite a few of these signal type bending device's on the market (Jaycar DFA, Greddy emanage, Apexi AFC, SAFC II, NEO) but in recent times have become fairly unloved with the advancement of aftermarket ECU's, specifically more PnP options combined with better knowledge of how setup/tune.

But for this car, there is no point in changing the ECU, perfect cold start, idle, fuel economy and legal i just cant walk away from - so signal bender it is.

For my particular setup the significant leaning of the map (apparently around 8% in some points) will also chuck in a couple of extra degrees timing. While these signal bending devices and inclusion of timing when leaning out mixtures are the devil on turbo vehicles on an atmo type thing such as this its an excellent 'trade-off'.

So started looking, being the tightarse i am i started looking at the Jaycar/autospeed DFA, ive secretly wanted to build one of these for many years - but never had the right setup for it.

Jaycar / Autospeed DFA:

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/Adam_PSi/P1010429.jpg

About $160 in parts and self assemble.

Throwing into the mix for around the same money the Apexi SAFCII can be had, this will perform all functions of the DFA but also tied to throttle movements & also able to display data such as MAF voltages (or Hz's in my case), engine knock, RPM, battery voltages & throttle angles... All configurable on various data screens. So i decided as much as i wanted to build the DFA the SAFCII made better sense.

So I set out looking for a SAFCII. These things haven't been in production for years so all 2nd hand (the NEO which replaced the SAFCII actually lacked features of the 'II' thus keep SAFCII's values quite high)

I quickly established the SAFCII going price is around ~$250, ended up picking one up on Gumtree for $180 after a couple of weeks half arsed searching :D

So far i've wired it in and configured it to my engine (confirmed working!) and played around a little on the data screens.

Have mounted it away in the glove box to maintain my 100% stock appearing interior :D

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-WbinzMxev68/Uzd_4B-8QpI/AAAAAAAAFQE/nIzWFs6M4c0/s912/20140330_121718.jpg

Tacho is nice as i don't currently have one - cheaper than a monster tach!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kiatFyK4c24/Uzd_9Uu8J4I/AAAAAAAAFQM/kPIPJC5Xsmo/s912/20140330_121810.jpg

And another handy screen which displays both numerically and graphically knock value, throttle, revs and correction (+/-)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YynNk4GbSbI/UzeABPU_gUI/AAAAAAAAFQU/mwun7ZsH_4M/s912/20140330_121934.jpg

Next project is to source a cheaparse wideband kit ($200 with gauge outa US) and start leaning out, i have a couple of maps from the Lexus forums but would prefer the safety of a WB before i even start tinkering.... A WB and the knocking sensor should make this a piece of piss to configure :D

p.s. I washed the S15 last week and took it for 100km drive lol.

Been a bit busy for a couple of months but thought id dust atleast one of my cars off on the weekend and drive it around a bit.

Dropped down to see mate on Saturday (killing time / daddy daycare duties) and as luck would have it he was able to find a few minutes to weld in my O2 wideband bung that's been kicking around for a while.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-RmgercjUAtM/U4HVTsaoszI/AAAAAAAAFT0/i0O8KYPMkOA/s720/20140524_125514.jpg

....Which meant the rest of the wideband setup ended up being installed yesterday afternoon - nice and stealth, hidden away in the glove box with the stezza and SAFC.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Csc0_l9Gkwk/U4HVdRO6ltI/AAAAAAAAFT8/NY2CP2YXNFg/s912/20140524_163525.jpg

Then had a tinker with the tune Saturday eve on the Dayboro dyno (local rural long straight road, 65MPH speed limit so its perfect), sorted out a fairly solid 12.5:1 map then headed back to the dyno today to lean it out a tad more ~13.4:1.

Chucked both maps into excel and all looks pretty good.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-QIZM5qUpJdo/U4HU81QYuHI/AAAAAAAAFTk/WIRv9ypqtbg/s1130/safc%2520settings.jpg

Has absolutely transformed the car (both performance and note of the engine), with such large minus numbers (-17%!) i'd say not only is a heap of fuel gone timing must have been added as well.

Decent result for $370 in parts (SAFC II + AEM wideband) :D

357rwhp on 13psi. Have an issue with timing dropping with RPM so we didn't push it hard, just a basic tune so i can drive the car.

Then had it shot for a magazine:

And more recently took it to the drags. Busy night - only a few runs:

13.1 @ 105.5 (2.3 60ft)

Run straight off the highway - hit limiter in every gear, crossed the line in 4th on limiter - fail but at least i knew id be shifting to 5th from here on.

13.2 @ 115.7 (2.4 60ft)

Drove it off the line to limit axle tramp on ramp (became apparent rear end needs sorting bigtime), ran it through to 5th gear - picked up 10 mph:D

More boost and timing issue sorted with more appropriate tires should see solid ET/MPH gains. For a long overdue first outing i'm happy :)

So thought it was about time to chuck the side project on the dyno. Full flex tune completed in 2hrs from base VE haltech map, Elites tune up amazingly quickly!

283hp @ 5.5 psi on PULP 87MON / 98RON (didn't bother further because 10:1 compression ratio) - good enough to get the car to the track and the odd squirt here and there on wastegate pressure.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/mw-x_ih8FBpq_1OQ7pH_ANB7fQXyAmovZ5h-IriyKxn5bP6WIHprB9zhl3te4scftTwG9LC3_1y_4Q=w1920-h1080-rw-no

n0IaUJ0JiyA

(...screaming for more boost)

Then dropped the PULP and poured in 50L of E85 (which resolved at E72 with remaining fuel according to the flex sensor).

400hp @ 13 psi on E85 - stock gaskets/studs/springs so about as far as we felt comfortable pushing it.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3AAUaSZq1Yck_JmzivSUGw3hakBA7B_rktoWhM6wm_kNXo4wW7 pOQs7yJS8i8wCVeBdeDTzFHNR9Wg=w1920-h1080-rw-no

Lf76bR-KYc4

Never going to make any real power on dyno because powerglide and stalled converter but looks promising :D

Trans didn't get hot enough to switch on the 2nd trans fan (2 x coolers with fans) and radiator did its job well. All seems to be working well.

Next job is to plate the diff mounts as Bluebirds have a tendency to rip the brackets off the floor due to minimal factory spot welds. Hopefully have it to the track in the next month.

So I’ve been thinking about treating myself to a new cheap interesting daily for a while but couldn’t commit until it could be garaged. Both of my project cars live in our dual car garage – my current daily (shit ute) and nopics 4wd live outside which is not an ideal situation given Queensland Australia summer storms (hail etc).

So finally, after 8 years of procrastination over a few weekends I knocked up a garage under our rear deck. Had a 33qsm slab poured, $25ea garage doors from gumtree, builders 2nds windows & colorbond plus a few hundred bucks at Bunnings on a door & framing materials. I’ve sealed inside with a corrugated iron under roof into its own drain. All weatherproof.

Still needs a weekends work fitting trim pieces and bit more colorbond but good enough to now put use.

Toys now live there freeing up main garage. Needs another 30sqm of concrete leading into but it’ll be fine for a while. Anyway enough on that.

So onto the car. Plan was to flick soul destroying shit ute which Wife basically refuses to drive (2001 Isuzu dual cab manual 4wd v6 petrol/LPG) for hopefully around the 3.5k mark and top up 5k from savings. Wasn’t prepared to spend any more given reality is this car will often be used for train station / day-care pickup/dropoff and shopping centre run – basically no point in getting anything to good.

Decided fairly early on into the piece that the car couldn’t be turbo (ie, I would frig with it 110% and ruin its daily place in the fleet), must have 4 seats, a boot, 4 or 6-cyl – no V8s (no v8 rego) & no euro because want some form of reliability :).

So started my gumtree search at 2000 and newer and $5000 upwards. V35 Skylines came up pretty quick. Decent size car inside, decent boot with lay flat back seat, 3.5L VQ35 engine of which I’m familiar with and passed the ‘interesting’ test. Also amazingly cheap to insure (?!)

Lowballed a few guys to around my budget and ended up lining up a 2004 base spec auto. Loosely negotiated a price and went and took a look at the car. Of course the owner (or owners brother who I was actually dealing with apparently) forgot to mention the paint scuff on the front – conveniently missing from the photos as well. That and a few cracks on the dash we arrived at a new figure of $8,000 with one week to do the deal. $100 down and I was on my way.

Typical smokers teeth headlights, reasonable body with a few minor(ish) dents and scratches, all wheels gutter rashed (sigh). That said it was 100% standard with genuine very low KMs which kept me interested. After all daily.

Few days away from pickup wife who works in insurance was asked by her employer if she could head to Sydney Aust for a month to assist with setting up an assessment centre for the recent hail storm – given wife ran a similar operation up this way a few years ago after a similar storm and did a great job she was basically hand-picked to make it happen - I now needed to pickup the car earlier.

Contacted owner (or owners brother) for an earlier pickup before wife left – owners brother wouldn’t budge from a Saturday pickup as from what I could gather the car was his daily driver until it was sold. Started to get cold feet given I wasn’t dealing with the actual owner of the vehicle, was being driven every day to god knows where, owner wasn’t 100% up front with condition and I expected issues with transfer given the owners brother and owner were incredibly unorganised (RWC yet to be organised) – I wasn’t making 2 x trips to pickup the car with a 4yo by my side so backed out of the deal and forfeited my deposit.

So started scouring gumtree again and cast the net a bit wider and ended up finding a car I’d looked at weeks ago. 5 week old ad & 250km from Brisbane so well and truly outside of most search criteria by this point. I’d actually connected with the owner on FB weeks ago when I was originally asking him some questions about it. At that time the car wasn’t what I wanted (lightly modified not standard) but given the bloke seemed like a genuine kinda guy I looked at it again in a bit more detail. Taking a leap of faith we negotiated a price I set off to buy my new daily sign unseen.

Wife in Sydney, in-laws organised to pickup kidlet from school I set off on Friday afternoon up north to pickup new daily.

….mentioned to my manager when I left the office on Friday that I could be late on Monday if the car ended up being a shitbox – long walk home.

A movie, some TV and dinner in the club car later I was met at the station by new daily and owner. Old mate was curious if someone was actually going to get off the train as it has seemingly all taken place so quickly. Quick look over the car at the station and It was better than I had expected which was refreshing. Deal was done and dropped now ex owner back to his house, which frustratingly for him was 200 odd meters from where the bitumen ended on his road. He could never keep it clean.

Car performed flawlessly on the way home. Saturday was spent giving the car a deep clean (found 100 yen) removing years of dust and dirt. Gave the car a quick polish - car was in much better condition again than I had expected.

Specs wise:

2003 V35 Nissan Skyline 350GT – Track spec.
6 speed manual
LSD
Brembo brakes
18” Factory wheels
Factory Nissan alarm & folding mirror options
Cloth interior - mint condition
New BC coilovers
New front end bushes
New HD exedy clutch & non dual mass flywheel.
New tint all round
New aftermarket headlights – RHD lights. Actually suit the car well.
Pioneer double din stereo (Bluetooth hands free and all the bits and pieces)
Invidia Gemini exhaust and cats (undecided if this will stay on but much quieter than I had expected - barely notice it already)
New windscreen installed & new tyres fitted the day I picked it up.
Safety certificate and 5 months rego.

Also received the stock suspension and exhaust.

On the road feels much quicker than I had expected, apparently in the spec it is it should do a high 13 @ 102ish. Feels about that quick but whatever. Compared to the standard auto version I was looking at I can’t believe it’s the same engine/car.

Car came with full Jap Nissan service history / documentation until the year it was imported. Was a Nagoya car so given Brembos, manual, LSD & region most probably an enthusiasts car :)

As for the folding somehow amazingly I still stayed within my budget - $500 more than the standard one above thanks to stale ad and too far from Brisbane. Incredible amount of car for the money.

So plan from here? - Plan is no plan, nice daily with comfortable seats that wife will actually drive and isn’t soul destroying for me. Cheap interesting lowly deprecating daily success :)
