View Full Version : Finaly building my SR20!

Well, after a few years of driving slow N/A cars... the boost bug has bitten again. Last time, it was my Turbo B15 (2001) Nissan Sentra with an SR20DET swap. Put down 404whp at 20psi. This time, it's RWD. I bought an S13 hatch a few years ago for 600.00. After driving it for almost 2 years with the KA.. it's over 200K now, and time to do something.
Well, I got a deal on an engine swap that I couldn't refuse.. and a few other things fell into place.. so I've started my new project. The engine is a N/A S14 SR20DE swap, purchased for 545.00! That's complete with tranny, harness, ECU, MAF.. everything. I am a big fan of Clark Steppler's (Jim Wolf Tech.), and plan on using an ECU tuned by him to power this car, so a wiring harness an ECU were critical in my purchase. A lot of people diss JWT... I know the guys there personally, and I know thier capabilities.. so I will go with them. The car will be traillered to El Cajon, CA when it's done, so we can spend a few days fine tuning it on the dyno there. So far.. here's what I'm doing..
S14 SR20DE swap
JE 87mm 8.5:1 pistons
Saenz custom forged rods
ARP rod bolts
ARP head studs
HKS 264* intake/exhaust cams
JWT valvesprings/retainers
HKS rocker arm stoppers
Cometic metal headgasket
Precision Turbo SC61
Log manifold
Tial 40mm wastegate
Custom head porting
Spearco FMIC and custom piping
Greddy Type R BOV
Twin Walbro 255lph pumps
Aeromotive FPR
Custom fuel rail
850cc injectors
Nitrous Express single fogger wet kit (50hp)
The bottom end will be blueprinted in house (my shop). I will also be grooving the block's main bearing seats and drilling the bearings for better oil feed to the main/rod bearings. I want to break 600whp on the spray. :)

I took the motor apart last weekend... everything looked great on it! Still had the factory hone marks in the cylinders.

I've been saving for 2 years to build my car.. I always said that if I did build it.. I was going to do it right. :)

I probably shouldn't be building it now.. I should be sinking this money back into my business... but I can't stand it anymore! 2 years with no fun... it's time to do something.. ;) I should have my bearings and headgasket in tomorrow.. Hopefully, I'll have my motor done by next week sometime..

what main and rod bearings did u get?
i was going to build my bottom end (on the SR), but i found it to be too expensive.(well since i don't have my own shop like u)

I am using regular old Nissan bearings... 53J bearings actually.. (For a 91-99) SR20DE FWD motor. It's the same bearings..

why didnt you just build a ka24 instead of the sr20de? i just dont understand, whats the advantage of the na sr compared to the ka. you were planning on building it anyway and then turbo so why the sr motor? i just dont know why you would go from a 2.4 to a 2.0? is there a reason why? either way, that looks sick as hell. and what does the turbo compare too size wise?

The KA is a great motor to turbo... and I realize that. Trust me, I went back and forth for a long time before I decided to do this. The big problem with the KA that bothers me.. is that no one knows what it will hold up to at big HP levels. There are a few 500whp KA's running around.. but most have problems with headgasket sealing (different expansion rate between cast iron and alluminum), and the crank/girdle design bothers me. It looks strong, but a few big KA guys that I've talked to, think the bottom end will need more reinforcment when you get up into the high 500's-low 600's. Mainly, attention to the girdle and problems with the crank trying to "flex". I know that the SR20 will hold the power level that I want.. as it's been done before and proven reliable if built properly. So, I went with it. That's not to say that the KA "can't" hold up.. I just don't want to spend a sh*tload of money building it.. only to have it blow up on me down the road. I think that for under 500whp.. the KA is a GREAT motor to turbo. I want 600whp... I plan on dragging the car a lot. So, this choice was logical.

this may be a dumb question, but are the internals of the SR20 NA different than that DET models?

schweet! now your block is good for 500+ at the wheels!!! go eat some 240s when you're done. hehe

There are a few difference in the internals..
DET has 8.5:1 C/R.. the DE has 9.5:1
DET has beefier rods.. the DE has slightly smaller rods
DET has piston oil squirters.. the DE doesn't
DET has 1mm larger exhaust valve-stems (sodium filled)... the DE doesn't
I believe that's the differences in internals.. The C/R I wasn't worried about.. because I am changing pistons anyway.. the rods... same thing. Oil squirters.. I don't realy like these. They add weight to the piston.. and throw off the weight balance a little. I find on a forged piston.. it realy isn't a big deal if you don't have these. The valves.. I'm not worried about.. I have never had a problem making big numbers on a FWD SR20DE head.. which has the same valves as my motor. If it becomes a problem... I will put the DET valves in with bigger guides.

Just save your coins man.. that's all I can say.. I've been waiting/saving for almost 2 years to be able to build this car. It's hard to be patient.. but now the time has come. :)

he made a post about it the other day, the engine is nuts. he did a dyno and it put down like 512, but he had to shut down at 5500. just look for the post.

I broke the rear end on the dyno... :-p Shutting down at 5400 or so.. It still put down 512whp and 488ft lbs before we let off.

Man how did you pick up a sr20de for $545? I'm trying to figure out what I should do. I plan on picking up a s13 sometime in the next couple of weeks and I don't know if I should just have to engine rebuilt and blueprinted or pick up a sr20de. I plan on turboing the car eventually, but not for a little while. What would you recommend, I only want to put down about 350whp.
Oh, by the way I contacted a couple of shops earlier and the only place I could find a sr20de w/ 5 speed tranny wanted $1150 shipped.

:wtf: :duh:
Last time I checked, oil squirters are on the block, and squirt oil up into the skirt of the piston, to cool it.
Maybe you're thinking of something else?
Fun fact: KA24DE has piston oil squirters too.

Come on guys cut me some slack. I'm at work right now and we are having problems with our internet conection and crazy viruses that keep poping up. They are restricting almost all websites, so if I log off this site I might not be able to log back in.

Maybe you shouldn't be on Zilvia while you're at work?
Seriously, though. You know just as well as us that google wouldn't be restricted. If your network is suffering from virii, that's from a deficiency in the 7 P's.
