i have been trying to smog my 92 s13 for about 2 months.. i cant get it to pass...
***PASSED***
okay so i passed smog finally.. my mechanic checked out all my vacuum lines for me and did timing again.. he found on the egr modulator to the egr.. there was a hose that melted.. this would explain my nox most likely also im not sure if it would affect HC but to my understanding it would a little bit because the recirculating exhaust gases arent 100% burnt fuel so if its going back into the intake it would help to burn it completely.. idk if that is right lol.. but i also replaced the o2 sensor and that seemed to lean the mixture out and balance it.. we also put a new magnaflow cat on.. he said the other cat was black inside.. due to lots of carbon build up(running rich). all together im not sure what made it pass.. but i hope this helps to an extent for people that were in my situation...
1st attempt.. passed emmisions barely failed timing cuz it was at TDC. LOL
2nd attempt..failed emmisions with high HC,CO,and NOx.. went to a mechanic he said its my cat... replaced my cat then had some other problems with timing fixed my timing problem..**still passed on CO and Nox but they are close to the max.
3rd attempt..failed emissions with high HC,CO, and NOx. almost the same exact results as the 2nd attempt...**passed CO and Nox but close. max hc is like 83, i got 115 then 116. Nox was like 2 away from failing. CO was about .65 max is .75.
I have replaced the cat, put timing to 20 degrees. replaced my dist. for a different reason. tested my egr and it seems to be working however the car doesnt die when i make the valve open but it gets very close.. the pairc valve seems to be working correctly, im not to sure about how they work but from my understanding it works when there is acceleration and pulls air into the exhaust to light the cat.
also back when i had a timing problem a mechanic told me to set my tps to .35 volts to try and fix my idle.. it didnt btw.. but i left it at .35 volts.. i read here somewhere a guy had his tps adj wrong and it made the computer think the throttle was still closed or something and it made an emissions comp. not work properly..
i havent replaced much but my uncle happens to be a master tech for toyota and i took it to him but he couldnt really help cuz he says he really only knows toyotas.. but he told me its not my spark plugs, cat, or o2 sensor.. what else could it be??? sorry there is alot but the more info the better you can understand. thanks
forgot to mention... i pass the 25mph fine
EDIT** used a smoke machine to check for leaks.. egr started leaking alot.. replaced egr... still failed with pretty similar results..
Score/Max
HC
123/82 fail
CO
.95/.75 fail
NOX
650/450 fail
sea foamed it as well
