View Full Version : clutch slippage....
Alright so i got a s13 hatch with a s14 sr20det...When I get on it and starts boosting hard my clutch slips.
The cluch feels nice and stiff, but the engagement is pretty much with the pedal almost all the way out, But I was wondering if I just replaced the clutch disk with a 6 pluck will I be okay? Is there a way to adjust engagement or is all that with the PP?
thanks....

Sounds like Someone needs a new clutch kit. Flame me if im wrong but im pretty theres no way to adjust that considering its all hydrolic. You might wana also cosider picking up a 1pc stainless clutch line to bypass the clutch dampner and improve your clutch feel a little.
well the clutch feels fine under normal driving, but when it starts pulling it slips...
Does anyone have any knowledge of XTD clutchs? i'm looking for reviews right now....

IDK Sounds like your just making too much power for that specific clutch set up. Id jus pick up a whole kit cuz your pressure plate and flywheel could be hella glazed over by now. AND if it was me id go EXEDY......
i think its from all the drifting and clutch kicks.
even if I go 50% trottle at 5psi it slips....

You need a new clutch.
Without going into great detail (becasue there are thousands of clutch threads here); don't worry about "what brand or type" of clutch to get. If your setup is mostly stock, just get one that will hold 300-350 ft/lbs torque and call it a day. It will serve you well & give you room to grow... You can have your flywheel turned.
Stainless clutch line gets rid of the dampner as stated- improves clutch feel nicely.
Make sure you do the sleeve/TOB/pilot bushing as well... Also a great time to upgrade the pivot ball if you haven't already done so.
Your pedal is adjustable- You can adjust the "slop" out of it. There is an adjustment jamb-nut setup on the pedal- really easy to figure out. Just don't adjust it TOO much, just enough to minimize the free-play.
Its got a SS line, also the clutch feels very firm(no free play), i'm just going to replace the disk and take it easy on it, then once I can get enough for a kit i'll do that b/c I want to swap out with a KA tranny anyways...

Replacing the just disk isn't going to solve your problem, it may cure it for a short period of time but, your pressure plate isn't up to the task of holding the power your putting down. Most likely it's a combination of both a worn disk and PP but, it is kind of pointless to upgrade just the disk. You'll still end up with a new slipping disk. Save yourself the headache and do both.
I dont have the money for both atm.

A 6 puck disc goes for 80-100. An OEM SR replacement kit isn't much more.

EGay has dozens of clutch kits for slightly more than $100. I don't recommend using them, but others have without issues.

yeah I kinda wanted to stay away from that...

Then your best bet is to pick up a SPEC or Exedy stage 1 kit, which can be had for less than $300.
I found a clutch, but when dropping the tranny do I HAVE to drain the tranny fluid? its pretty new.

Lol yes... If not its just going to dump out the tail shaft.

1. Drain fluid into bucket.
2. Dump fluid back in tranny.
3. ???
4. Proft

I'm sorry to thread jack:
same problem like OP. Clutch engagement is near the top. Pulled the motor out for other reasons, but since I'm there, (for the OP) what are things to replace for a stock setup?

Check your TOB and your clutch disk. If its overly worn you'll see it.

Yeah I will, I want to just get a disk, mainly because the clutch itself feels okay, so I think the PP is fine...
is this a good replacement? http://gripforce.com/product/exedy-oem-clutch-kit-jdm-89-2/1999-nissan-silvia-s13-s14-s15-sr20det-2.0l-turbo.html

I was replying to the gentleman above that asked what he should do since his is apart.
That clutch should be fine if youre at stock power levels and have no intentions of increasing it right now. I think it's a complete kit though. I'm telling you right now, if you do just the disk, it's going to bite you in the ass.

If you choose to half-ass it due to lack of funds, then maybe you should consider selling it & getting something less maintenance-intensive (Honda/Toyota).

Should i get that or the exedy one? That one is cheaper tho, I plan on running stock 7 pounds then save up for a ACT hd stage 3 and run 14psi.

The information is there. How you choose to use it is on you, good sir.
I think the exedy will hold better and last longer.

Like OP, would it be wise to buy a new flywheel or replace it?
My stock flywheel looks almost brand new, teeth are perfect. The surface looks glazed over and you could feel the crease between the wear. Resurface? Thinking of buying lightened flywheel with an OEM Exedy clutch kit.

Have a reputable machine shop resurface it. It might cost you 50$.

disk only matters to an extent; if you exceed the rating of your PP, then the disk will slip no matter what.
on my old m20 powered e30, our flywheels had a lip for the disk to sit on; it was .11mm in height. It was common practice to shave the area around the lip to make it more pronounced(and therefore sitting the pp lower on the flywheel), but .17 was the maximum tolerance allowable.
it was also very common to see people using an oem sachs disk with a sachs sports PP. expensive, but a good alternative to aftermarket stuff where quality was questionable in the eyes of the buyer.
so its really more about making sure your PP has a high enough clamping force to keep the disk form slipping.
