So its a fully built sr20 s14 and just cranked it and fired right up. Please watch and listen and let me know what you think.

It doesnt sound like rod knock and highly doubt it is but i am bias. Also the motor was primed before hand. and when hand cranking it did not make any noise.

Hello from Houston... IMO ... Lifters... they came unbleed when you flipped the engine over when you put the oil pan on most likely. Remove the valve cover and press on the rocker arm that is over the lifter, if it moves a little, that;s where that noise is from. ALSO... check to make sure that the slotted valve shims that the rockers sit ontop of are in the correct position, only one side of the rocker arm is narrow enough to fit in the slot. It is possible that one or more were incorrect and have cracked throwing a rocker.

so i took the valve cover off and when the valve is in the seated position i am able to wiggle the rocker arms a little. does that indicate a non bled lifter?

Sounds like lifters.

If you didn't submerge them in oil, in an upright position, pumping them with something that fit in the small orifice then they were not bled. I do it repeatedly for each lifter and right before I am ready to install them in the head.

I'm going to spoon feed you a little... since I doubt it can be really explained and you seem to have a brain since you went to UT...

Do it just like that you will get messy, but it's the only way. You'll know they are bled when you can't even push the rounded part down at all and it's no longer spongy. If that does not work, whoever did your machine work to your head messed up on the valves and cut the TOP of the VALVE STEM where the shim sits and screwed up your clearances big time.

lol How do you know I went to UT? anyways you guys were right. Thanks for the help. that is the sound of 8 lifters that are not bled...

I took the lifters back out and bled them again and the motor is purring!
