whatever's cheapest. makes no sense to me to put high octane if i'm only putting around town. 87 works fine and dandy. i only use 91 on the bike because it usually costs about 6 to 8 bucks to fill it up.

I usaly go to this ghetto station that has 2 pumps that are like 30 yrs old. They don't even say what brand of gas it is, maybe Tesoro? Anyway it is usally the cheepest gas around $1.89 for 87. I have had bad experiences with Shell gas.
Hey Shell I got something in my pocket for you...wait...oh here it is :fawk2:

all about 76 (ethanol alcohol based verses most places with their shitty MTBE). Individual lab tests showed that 76 is the most stable gas out there compared to the others. Gas mileage however wasn't the best (Shell got best) but with that, Shell also got the most unstable rating. It's all an investment, i go with 76.

To all who say, its not all the same, cheap gas will kill your car, and any other claims that are similar... I have a bit to share with you.
i use gas from a gas station run by quickie food... it was Amoco for a long time, then was sold and is now called "Petro Power" its the cheapest gas in town.... before they changed over i asked who was buying out the store and what kind of gas would be sold.... to my surprise, chevron.... i couldn't believe it... the next day when i came by guys in chevron uniforms were scraping off the Amoco labels on the pumps and replacing them with "Petro Power" and if you catch the trucks filling up the pumps, sure enough.... Chevron trucks....

I use 76 also, and agree about the ethanol statement earlier. For those of you that don't know, if you run ethanol under boost it cools. So the air is more dense which means better kaboom and a faster airflow and the alcohol burns hotter. I wish there was a gas station that runs a higher percentage! (cause the amount in 76 gas is really very little haha!)

For my SOHC, i get Valero or 76 as often as i can, and always 89 octane. For my SR i get 100 octane from the pump @ 76 (4.30/gallon)or whichever racetrack i go to(5.50/gallon) and sometimes 91 when there's no racegas around(2.20/gallon)

Is valero good?! hahaha
people always ask me why the fuck i criticize about using cheapo gas places. Alright... yes they use the same pipeline to transport their gas, and sometimes the gas that say 76 takes out on one side was actually the gas that Shell put in on the other side. It's all the same... UNTIL they put in their additives. That's what matters. I love the History Channel

yup, it's ALL about the additives. One of those additives won't allow the gas to freeze or helps at least (that's the only additive I know of, there are plenty more though).

sil40drift
08-15-2006, 01:20 PM
If you have turbo or high compression N/A'S like more than 9:1
You NEED to run mid - high octane gas. In a nut shell. the octane rating is how much the gas can be compressed before it spontaniously ignites.
I had a 3000gt N/A with a 10:1 comp stock. if i ran anything less than 91 it was bad for the engine because it would occasionaly combust before the piston reached TDC.
If your driving a sports car, RUN higher octane gas just to be safe. it will extend your engine life and performance.
I look at it like this. Say 93 is 20-30 cents more than 87 ike it is here. that means every 10 gallons, your paying 2-3 dollars more. so thats about 4-6 dollars more per filllup. its REALLY not a big deal if you love your car and love to drive
LB.Motoring
08-15-2006, 01:49 PM
if you live near boating areas, the river etc. you can get very high octane from the pump, I purchased 110 from the pump a while back, the best part, we only purchased 3~ gallons, but becouse of some error and the pump was old, it kept the fuel flowing, full tank 110 octane 8~ bucks, priceless :)

I never really believed that the additives and detergents in higher priced gas were worth the "hype", but this article in Car&Driver changed my mind.
If you think about why auto manufacturers would create this TopTier designation it starts to make sense. It's not some shady deal with the big oil companies to promote their gas, it's to reduce expensive warranty claims on engines and fuel systems that get messed up by lower quality gas.
In the end all gas basically burns the same (because its pretty much all going through the same pipelines to get here) and will produce the same power, unless you just get a bad tank that is contaminated by moisture or something.
But from now on I'm going to put a couple extra bucks in my tank so my expensive injectors don't get clogged with deposits.

they all get there gas from the same damn place
Gas is Gas is Gas is Gas who cares, jsut go to the place that has it for the least!!!
In some respects you are right.....but there are details that make this statement a little untrue.
Yes, and gas station no matter the brand, Shell, BP, Citgo...etc.... can and does purchase gas from several different suppliers including each other as well as from themself. This gas all comes from the same tanks as regular, midgrade, and premium. Here comes the difference and what makes one better than the other. Shell, BP, Citgo, and mom and pops store...etc.. all have different brlend recipes for "their" additives. The additives are what makes the gas better. Additives help with lubricity (since we don't use lead anymore, yes lead was a lubricant), the cleaning of injectors, and each "brand" of gas has different levels of sediment and suspended solids (what ends up in the bottom of your gas tank.
So, all the mom and pop places get the generic additives and the big oil companys use their recipes that are engineered to make theri brand better or worse then others. Shell V-Power is among the best fuel that can be purchased at the consumer level.... they spend a lot of money developing a good product, Exon/Mobil would be second to Shell.
So when you are deciding who's product to put in your car, know that like everything else in life, you are getting what you pay for.
Also, if you live in an area that has ethanol mandated, all gas has the same amount no matter the station....remember the whole thing about it all comes from the same place........
** Disclaimer, I don't work for either of these companies...***

if you have been pumping 91, i wouldn't suggest downgrading,
I've ran 87-91 and when i went back to cheaper grade my car would backfire more run shitty, idle etc,
but when i went back to 91 im running smoooth.
I've never had any backfiring problems, but I have noticed a significant performance issue. Besides the difference between 89 and 91 isnt all that much these days. Might as well just spend the extra $2.00.

Considering it's not a high performance motor. It can't hurt it.
actually, i let my gf use my S14 for a month and she was pumping cheap 87 and my check engine light came on out of no where. turns out the cheap gas clogged up my EGR valve and had to take it apart and clean it! it was a bitch too!
so i only pump 91 lol

Use to run sheetz some times chevron, regular. That was when first got my car. Then stopped using sheetz cause people I knew didn't speak highly of it. So now its chevron or shell, and 93 at that because I bypassed my knock sensor, but still have stock timing. I wonder how good their cleaning additives are like chevrons techron and shells nitrogen whatever its called. Think exxon just came out with something similar, seen commercial the other day?

So for me 76 if the sun is still up, and Shell when the sun is down. =]

Here in Arizona I only fill up at QuikTrip (QT) gas stations. Their gas has a "Top Tier" rating which exceeds the United States Environmental Protection Agency's standards for gasoline additives. They also offer a money-back guarantee

Chevron, So much better, keeps your valves and combustion chamber clean. Started using it awhile ago when my friend and I heard that, burned, chevron smells like racing fuel :D I noticed that it lasted a little longer and that it felt smoother. My friend on the other got to really see the advantage. Now my friend I'm talking about is into old VW bugs :picardfp: knowing VW bugs, the engines are very easy to remove and disassembled. So this being his 7th time having it dissassembled, and he started using chevron, his entire valve train was CLEAN, like shiny. Previously he ran what ever was cheapest and always had sludge inside.
On top of this, some of you may have heard of Bisimoto. I was recently talking to him and asked him about which fuel he likes, he answered Chevron, due to the formulas and additives being far superior to other fuel companies. I believe he even did a dyno test and found chevron made slightly more hp :2f2f:

is 93 octane a must? (ka24de)
my gas door says use premium only. And being the ka24de is slow as fck and has very medium compression why does it require 93?? I know 10.0 + would need it but i just do not see the need for 93 octane(or whatever premium is at a given station).
Scope240sx
02-06-2014, 03:27 PM
LOL oh boy, ill try to help you here.
It could be any kind of motor, even my buds honda metropolitan we run 100 octane in that sucker and it flies!
The higher octane burns more evenly, burns less oil, more efficienctly, the combustion cycle is much more powerful & your oil will last longer with less carbon deposits in the motor.
Obviously you CAN run a lower rating of fuel, but you will not achieve anything close to the engines maximum potential.
It actually bothers me when some ppl say hey my motor is N/A and its a KA so its pointless to do anything dad dude dad dude.
Man just run like 1/2 tank 91 and go put a 1/4 in of 100 octane, and then your question will be answered.
P.S. Team Ferrari for Formula One runs Shell 91 Look it up if you want bra!

Fine.
Higher octane rating does not mean more energy when burned. It means more resistant to ignition. That means you can run a more aggressive tune/timing on it without pinging or knocking. You do not magically make more power on a higher octane without a tune on a low power, low compression n/a 4.
Damn ricers that think 100 octane works like giggle juice... lawl
sleepyS14se
02-11-2014, 08:45 AM
ok thanks fuego.
I was only asking because my fuel door says use premium unleaded only. And i know the ka24de isn't a powerhouse nor a high compression engine so i was just wondering. I have been using 93 octane since the day we put the engine in.
Thanks for clarifying

100 octane
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2,2,4-Trimethylpentane
Notice the only difference is the shape of the molecule.
Typical gasoline contains a slew of different shapes that average out to the octane you hope you put in the tank.
The accessibility of the gasoline molecule to oxygen radicals is affected by shape, as well as the packing ability of the gasoline molecules, which influences vaporization, and kinetics when reactions take place.
At the end of the day its all fat without heavy carboxylic ends. But just like in the body where some fats are healthy and some are not so much...
