So at what level do you rate your automotive knowledge? Let's see who really knows what they're talking about. Be honest now. You're only lying to yourself.

~ 3 ~
I'd say I'm pretty crafty with the autos. I've never swapped an engine myself, but helped with friends engine work. Also worked as a mechanics assistant, have done body work, and am painting my own 240 when gets warmer. I don't pay people to install parts, unless it's only to cover my own arse (like an expensive L.S.D). This feels like a resume. Only thing is when I get frustrated I tend to break things. :D

1...I know how to drive 5-speed
You making fun of me? :squintd: ;)

I'm not trying to toot my own horn or anything, but I'd say that I have a good amount of knowledge, just because I have learned from many other much-more-experienced people's doings... But based on actual works performed by myself I'm probably only a 2.5 or 3...

2.5... know how to do axles and diff, suspension and drivetrain stuff OTHER than clutchwork (I've heard it's not hard, but I don't have the tools required) ... I haven't touched the engine though, and don't really intend to, simply because most of the more exotic stuff we'd need (well, relatively exotic - engine stand, good covered parking lot, cherry picker, etc etc) I just don't have access to. Darn.

Well I was a auto tech for GM of Canada and Ford of Canada and I am trained at Parts, and auto service. Plus I can rebuild Rotaries and tune them.

And if I lived closer to the NISSAN dealer they want to hire me!!!!

yah im about a 3.5, swapped my friends ka to another ka withought even knowing what a clutch was. but I mean how hard is it anyway. took me 2 weeks when I did it, and when I did it to my car, it seemed like it took 2 hours. but ive been pretty much teaching my self. my dad doesnt know what a piston is. so im out of luck there. most stuff I learn is from here and im in the middle of doing my sr swap. but then again I dont even know how to drive a stick( yet I just orderd a brand new clutch for my sr), thats gonna have to change real fast though.

Hm, I can count how many times I've driven stick on my two hands. But, I've helped out with aznpoopy's s14. Did some basic stuff plus timing chain guide and engine mounts. (Engine mount bolts SOOOOO annoying!!!) Soon though, I'll have to do some maintenance on my fc so what does that count as? 2? 2.5??

I change mine to five.. work with emissions all day long. Engine swaps(same engine). yes. Engine "conversion/change overs". No.

I was raised by two mechanics, my mom is ASE certified smog tech, and my dad can work on things with carburetors and, build engines all sorts of stuff. He just never got certified, but he can do anything when it comes to engines ( as long as there not fuel injected ) My knowledge is okay I give it about a 4 but I can work on cars, with no problem I started doing it when I was like 5 so I just know how, other than that I think im going to go to UTI and get my ASE master tech. cert. one of these days.

lucky7
07-02-2005, 08:10 AM
i would say im 2.5ish to 3. ive never done a swap, but i have taken an engine apart and put it back together. im the guy that likes to understand how things work more than getting my hands dirty. i pay to have alot of shit done mostly because i dont trust myself. so yeah, i do much much much more reading about automotive than physical "stuff". werd.

I chose 2, although its probably 3 or 4. I have not been able to see if my efforts at my engine swap and wiring myself have paid off, so I cannot really say I've done those things successfully. Assuming everything worked out good, I'd say between 3 and 4 for myself. I've learned a ton from this website as far as research goes.
