View Full Version : Rattle after installing belt on KA

I replaced my frayed power steering belt on my KA24DE, and on startup I started to have some disgusting noise. I used page 8 of the FSM under MA and only touched the two 14mm bolts (loosen and adjusting).

I've tried loosening and tightening the belt (from about 1/2in to 5mm deflection) in steps and it hasn't helped. How could I have fucked something so simple up :picardfp:?

Inspecting the pulley bracket, everything is tight and shouldn't be a problem. There're no obvious obstructions.

Here's a video. The sound is worse IRL.

I've read about belt tensioners making this noise when they go bad. Is that what this sounds like? My pulley system worked perfectly before this, I was just replacing the worn belt.

EDIT: I handcranked the engine to help the belt on originally, but in retrospect I did it the wrong way. I'm reading this can cause the timing to jump. Does it sound like I'm having valve / piston contact?

Lol lol lol

Timing can never jump by what you did. Timing is internal and done by the timing chain on the ka. A power steering belt has nothing to do with timing

I know timing's internal. I also know tired motors with low oil pressure like to jump chains, especially when you remove the guides. I've read in several places that reverse-cranking by hand can cause the chain to jump. I've also read that this is bullshit, and timing can't jump from counter-clockwise cranking. Just though I would mention it, I'm panicking. I don't like new engine noises.

When I rev, the noise goes away. The lower the RPMs, the worse it is. It doesn't bog or anything.

EDIT: Man I was freaking out yesterday. What the hell.

Drove the car to work. Engine stayed cool, no overheating. No loss of power, no loss of power steering. The noise went away by the time I got home. Not sure what it was? Hopefully it resolved itself.
