So I've been in the S-Body world for about 18 months now, been looking around on here for a little while so thought I'd post up my money pit S13

Bought it bog standard bar exhaust, nistune ecu running standard map and some cheapo gauges badly installed, one set itself on fire on the way back with it.

I'll just copy and paste most of my stuff and try not to re-write it all, so if some of it doesn't quite follow dont panic!

Soon looked like this to see what I'm dealing with:
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5179/5468078243_2df8b5c926_z.jpg
Then found this, job for tomorrow is sorting this lot out properly!
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5219/5468080923_1a43b74727_z.jpg
Melted water temp gauge, eek (dodge wiring to blame I imagine)
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5217/5468689752_c608b6404f_z.jpg
Finished up looking like this
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5016/5468723918_b2609c7e62_z.jpg

Overall I was pretty happy with it! Few bumps and scrapes, usual rust issues one biggy being the passenger footwell and front turrets from what I'd seen on first inspection.

Wiring sorted out to this
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5013/5472220772_ddddf74a17_z.jpg
Much better! All chock block and bullet connectors gone, fully soldered and cable tidied.
And it works!
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5176/5471636837_46a3d8aae1_z.jpg

managed to wrap my dash/centre console and headlining in faux suede! looked amazing inside under artificial light, however in sunlight its very bluey rather than being black, so i imagine i'll rip it out and swap it to some real black material when pay day hits. Also given the light grey fixings a coat of some matt black for now to see how they'd come out and it looks pretty good, camera gives them an odd shine, but in real life they look spot on.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5135/5517476835_ea12d902d5_z.jpg

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5093/5517478555_bff3cabc84_z.jpg

Started on the boot, has the usual holes from spoilers and a mega rust hole that had been bodge fixed, so out that came, as did the wiper motor and it got primered up.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5148/5647460104_eab037afe6_z.jpg

Then out came the rest of the interior, stripped it of everything and removed sound deadening to reveal some major rust holes.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5304/5647452864_978332e71b_z.jpg
this one is worse than it looks ended up chopping a lot more of the floor pan out than i first wanted, but thought do it once, do it right!

At this point it was do or scrap from my point of view. But after some deliberation out comes the grinder and mig welder. No pics of the finished action but shall get some soon enough.
Then instead of moping over how rubbish the shell was, i thought id start on some interior bits that were uber rusty and weren't going back in the same!

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5226/5646871453_56832b0222_z.jpg

Had a peek inside the ECU, nistune board! This made me a very happy man and explains the fuel cut at peak boost, doubt it has the right map on it.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5150/5646866135_005dd2f62c_z.jpg
Since then all holes have been cut out and replaced with fresh metal, all primered and seam sealed. Also sured up the passenger side footwell with some bracing as i dont want it goign the same way as the drivers side.
Carpet has been dyed black and everything is slowly being put back together.

The faux suede on the dash has been whipped off as the finish was far to blue and the glue used hadnt taken properly, and im far too much of a perfectionist to let it stay as it was. In the process of relocating the extra gauges into a pillar pod.
Exhaust was blowing, so ive had that off and adjusted to sort that, but now its fouling on the underside, so i have some flexi bits to put on this weekend.
Rear droplinks have been replaced as the old ones were super knackered.
Its had a sparkplug change to sort out the running, seems to have done the trick, filled up on coolant as it was a tad low.

To do list is pretty big, but hoping to get the majority of it sorted this weekend to send it for an MOT next weekend. If its not ready looks like i'll be burning the midnight oils!

More pics to come when i take a camera outside with me! Just cant wait to get her roadworthy!

Also have purchased some paint to go on this when its passed as a bit of a treat...

Re-did front to rear brake lines, new ball joint in the front lower arms

Sorted the turbo elbow gaskets as they where mullered

new brakes:

New Arms:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7172/6636521599_45eb49ea6b_b.jpg
Not great quality but I got them at a price I couldn't really turn down, I also bought at this point some rose joint protectors as I don't want the rose joints to get rubbish in them. Silicon greased the joints up after sticking these on. Same as from Rally Design, I got 8 1/2" ones to do all the rose joints.

And fitted:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7161/6636516147_d287fe250f_b.jpg

No pics of the front, was spannering on my own and completely forgot till i got to this side!

Didnt manage to do the camber arm on the drivers side as the subframe bolt rounded both sides and couldnt get in there with the grinder to get it off, So will change this side when I drop the subframe later in the year when the weathers better to do all the bushes and a good de-rust! All arms set to same as originals as I'm not lowering it just yet.

Whilst underneath I spotted that my fuel tank straps where rotten, one all the way through the other close to being so. So went ahead and made myself some new ones! £12 for 2 strips of stainless steel 1m long by 30mm wide x 2mm thick and set to work.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7175/6636513745_1d0e0f5d36_b.jpg

Fitted these tonight, the one sat closest to the middle of the car was a right pain to get at with the subframe in the way. but a good half hour of spannering saw this off and another 20 mins to get the new one back on again.

coilovers arrived, look in decent condition, cleaned up quite well as well
http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=76595&d=1328550200
Had a bit of a challenge to over come, as the drivers side rear original camber arm bolt that holes it to the subframe had rounded at both ends, so to get that off without dropping the whole subframe i ended up cutting through the camber arm, then grinding through the bolt in through the middle of the bolt/arm/bush. But with that finally off, the job was super simple as expected.
Will need to get some subframe bushes at some point as I levered a bar in to check movement and there's quite a bit!
So after fitment and a quick wash, not dropped it as much as I can, just enough to loose the inches of room untill i pick up a new set of wheels to fill out the space and sort the fitment out
Before:

http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=76597&d=1328550921p/IMG]
Also sorted out the sticky calliper, so now its braking straight and true, with the new discs and pads fully bedded in!
Alignment will need to be sorted shortly, drives great up to 65mph, but after that I have a vibration/wobble that just gets worse cant seem to drive through it

Subframe polybushes
[IMG]http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=77032&d=1331834576

And a new bootlid as mines started to rust through again and i've lost the weather strip, so seemed cost effective to just buy the lot, hopefully in the post tomorrow
Its a bit bright but wont stay that for long.

http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=77033&d=1331835084

Then pulled the whole rear end off the car, petrol tank and full subfram ready for a re-furb as the bushes were gone, might as well go all out.

Looks fresh with a like of paint and lacquered to protect, also coated the filler inner with a bit of black to freshen it up a bit. Cleaned the rubber top and the pipe work too, will grab some snaps of that later. Will be cleaning up and replacing all the rubbers, will clean up well with a heat gun! Will also be putting an bike inner tube around the filler pipe for further protection in the future

Diff finished

Not sure on the gold, but it needed something to pick out the details and that's what i had to hand, looks better in the flesh, seems very bright on the photos. Also picked out the lettering with silver.
I was going to polish it up but i don't have the time to do it all properly just now, but it will get done when i do.

All the fresh stuff ready to get back together tomorrow! Finally looks like everyone else's!!
http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=77382&d=1334526786

All together again

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8018/7105415559_58153031e0.jpg
cleaned the interior, thought id show you guys the gauge holder and new dash I've put in with all the black trimmings. Looks super fresh, nice place to be, crappy phone pics in the sun, will whip out the real camera when I get some batteries!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7083/7273991380_296de37452_z.jpg

Black sunroof surround finishes it off nicely

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7223/7273990086_c41660d1b6_z.jpg

Gauges, not quite perfect unfortunately, so will be re-doing

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7093/7273988932_11303532d4_z.jpg

I've also picked up some s14 interior lights to spray up mat black, so i can have a light in the front half of the car! Couldnt find the 180sx one, so s14 front will do!

That's the end of part 1, got a lot lot more to go but can't add more just yet!

So I've collected all the parts I need to hopefully sort a water leak out, do a cambelt change, sort an oil leak and swap the head gasket

Ordered a waterpump from camskill, turns out its one with a plastic impeller, so I ordered a Blueprint one from Apex (not in pic) cba sending the camskill one back so if anyone wants it for cheap PM me an offer. Also have 2 used coil packs to hopefully sort my running issues that arrived this week, cheers suprmek1 and another thanks to copey on here for giving me a drivers side window switch panel last week, works great!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7115/7425633414_84170d52f0_z.jpg

Replaced the rocker top screws with stainless allen bolts, much tighter fit, and has stopped the oil weep I had, also did the spark plug cover ones too. And swapped one of the wmic standard black pipes for an alu one I've had lying around for a while, just because

current engine bay pics. Really need to spend some time cleaning this up as its a bit of a mess..

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7115/7425644006_7a6b63147c_z.jpg

Over heated after 100 miles on a trip back to lincoln, luckily had some food and some John Deers to look at whilst I waited for it to cool off! Can't wait to get the time to sort all this out..

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8162/7425642694_1a6b44a8e0_z.jpg

And finally its all close to being one colour, bye bye orange boot and crappy matt black patch work quilt rear quarters, hello badly matched Halfrauds crappy sapphire blue..

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8162/7425649292_57640cbb6c_z.jpg

WHEELS!

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/548332_555385588528_2043124450_n.jpg

So I've had a bit of time to sort my cambelt, water pump and other belts out. followed a tutorial from zilvia.net i think it was, farily straight forward, but did a few other bits and pieces on the way.

first, removed bonnet and jacked up in the garage for ease of access to everything
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7248/7528282880_2188d3865b_z.jpg

Ditched what was left of the coolant removed wings, bumper, and catch can.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7111/7528282274_1b8f2f7abb_z.jpg

This lot came out of the catch can, any one tell me if that's pretty normal? Never emptied it before sort of light brown looking watery oily mixture
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8020/7528283432_a2626d9db7_z.jpg

Radiator and viscous cowling out the way, along with all the piping i could remove for access too
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8028/7528281644_8ef41f4c7c_z.jpg

Viscous off, all belts loosened ready for removal, as you can see, lots of oil residue everywhere thats collected road muck all over the place, crank oil seal leak is presumed! so all that will be cleaned up alter on

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8285/7528281080_5bb8175ec9_z.jpg

off with the CAS, looks in cood nick, all the splines are intact both on this and the cams, never noticed the CAS is a Mitsubishi item! This normal?

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8163/7528291174_3fe8a263bf_z.jpg

Underneath the cam cover, looks like someone has already done a cambelt replacement recently, but with all the oil that's been thrown around, and since i already have a new kit ready to go on, it's all getting replaced for peace of mind.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7249/7528279950_2f2fb44e95_z.jpg

Off with the crank bolt, super easy with the strong bar, after putting it into 5th, and off with the crank pulley with a bearing puller, easy peasy

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8430/7528279386_7e44990bdd_z.jpg

although the crank pulley does had a chunk missing, i presume this will be an issue with it making it out of balance, so i'll be on the hunt for a new one sharpish

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7267/7528278442_b2ae13378b_z.jpg

and finally off with the bottom cover, and BAM! Oil seal leak as suspected

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8003/7528279008_7c9f7c379c_z.jpg

So next was to pull that seal out and replace, so did this and cleaned up all the excess oil and pulled off the water pump, the gasket was half stuck to the block, so cleaned that off and made sure the mating surfaces where back to being uber clean, and popped the new water pump on
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8005/7528277970_549109e399_z.jpg
Much Better!

On with the new cambelt after cleaning up the sprockets of any oily residue all the marks on the belt and block matched to motored on and popped it all back together again, after a bit of a clean. Cleaned the viscous too

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8431/7528276798_2f40e84b44_z.jpg

Whilst i was there, emptied out all the other easy bolt off bits and gave the bay a much needed clean up, as it looks like its never been done in its 18 year life!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7248/7528290328_f2d8f57427_z.jpg

Looking a little better!

Popped all the belts on, tightened them all up so that you can just twist them 90 degrees on their longest run by hand, locked all the tensioning bolts down popped the radiator and cowling back in

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8150/7528288730_a54cc44fcd_z.jpg

then all the pipe work and bolt off bits all put back into place after a good old clean up too

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7116/7528288096_6ff57ed6eb_z.jpg

the reason for the wings coming off is to tuck the looms, so did this!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7119/7528287408_602c768c17_z.jpg

On both sides.
Also re-routed the catch can pipes to run from one rocker cover to the other, and then to the catch can, much nicer looking set up with what i have to hand, another thing to redo in the future.

Then re-fitted all the panels and dropped her back to the floor, quick test drive, and everything is fine again.

Replaced the original cap with a spare i had lying around as it looks like that was the main reason for my over heating problems, with a cusco one on order from Japan, which actually arrived this morning.
And drove it to Birmingham the next day without issues.

The next day I drove down to see Remo to pick up my new wheels, and back to Southport to fit them, without any issues until i stopped at a services to re-fuel the car and myself. Fan belt noise going mental. So had a quick peak when it had cooled down, the belts had started to melt either through being too tight or not tight enough. Carried on regardless as I didn't have any tools with me and it was getting pretty darn late. By the time i got off the M6, something sounded like it had fallen off the front and clattered its way through the bay and off onto the road behind, so pulled in with the belts squealing, to realised that the tension bolt on the alternator had riggled it's way loose and dropped off!! Nightmare!

So there I am on the hardshoulder of the M58 at gone midnight after a day of currently 400 miles, 6 matches of football and 6 hours driving, so I bite the bullet and just motor on slowly home with it squeeling away.. finally arriving home around 1am!

Moral of the story, always carry tools! (i normally do, that's the only time i hadn't got them with me, not that it was much use after its fallen out anyway)

Next morning, got to had a look and see what the damage is, belts seem to still be in great condition, but a little mucky from slippage. So tighten up and all is fine. However, mega oil spills underneath, quick inspection, looks like its the oil seal that i'd replaced leaking more than before, even after coating it in fresh oil before replacing it.

SO! After all that, my bays back covered in oil, a new genuine seal is on order for Thursday for me to strip it down and do it all again!

Lesson learnt, genuine seals from now on! fml! All part of the learning process i suppose, live and learn!

After all that disappointment i decided to put on my newest purchase, Wheels! Now I've been waiting for this since the day i bought the car, and they look awesome, completely change the car.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8155/7536946590_d3fc62451b_z.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7120/7536971256_21780295f5_z.jpg

D1 Long wheel nuts, and nicely dropped, can't drop it any lower at the moment, as the coilovers catch the back of the rim without spacers, so i'll address that after all my other issues are sorted out.

Gave it a quick wash, swapped out the tax disc holder for a simpler one

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7270/7544848082_817a7532ce_z.jpg

Next on the to do list, re-bush everything, as the rear lower arm inner bushes had died and are creaking more than an un-oiled bed and is annoying me quite a lot!

Whilst waiting for the genuine seal to arrive at nissan, thought i'd get on with some other little bits, swapped a coilpack and cleaned up the springs inside the others, i have 3 where there are only springs, where the coloured gel appears to be yellow colour like so

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8284/7557968966_c24c0ca75f_z.jpg

and one that i replaced with another with the spring and mental cylinder on the end. I extended all the springs and cleaned up all the contacts to give a better connection, which seems to have worked so far on a few drives out.

New rad cap

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8282/7558217680_9cd0660107_z.jpg

Sprayed up both my window wipers and my front nissan badge to black, as they where both worn and looking rather sorry for themselves, so quick fix was to primer them up, panther black them, and then lacquer, seem to have come out a treat.
Also Relocated the number plate and gave the whole car a quick polish to try to bring the paintwork back to life

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8287/7557965206_a187b8597a_z.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8028/7557966322_899586f387_c.jpg

Decided i'd had enough of the pond that keeps appearing in the boot due to crappy sealing rear lights and cracked seals around the bootlid. So went round the boot seal with a tube of super glue fixing all the cracks/rips/tears and whipped off the rear lights

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8421/7557967978_0589750936_z.jpg
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7113/7557967470_d531e3580d_z.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8002/7557966776_8722c437d4_z.jpg

No pictures of them cleaned up, but the metal work looks in fantastic condition, just road grub really, cleaned up really nice. resealed with generous amounts of clear silicone bathroom sealer, little trick to chop a tall V in the end of the tube spout, then it leaves a nice point to ensure a full seal when going round! Learnt that from wheeler dealers Eddy!
Had no rain as yet, so we'll see if that has fixed the problem, if not, its at least something else ticked off my list.

So today, trip to nissan this morning to collect my genuine front crank oil seal to see if i can cure the horrendous leaking that's happened after installing the none genuine one last week. Since it was a cracking day outside, thought I'd work outdoors and make the most of it

After having done it all last week, within half an hour it was back in the air with all the bits off that i needed to get at.

And as suspected, Oil practically pouring out the bottom

Ended up cable tying the belt to the cams so that i didnt have the job of completely reseating the cambelt, all in all took 3 hours from up in the air, few breaks, couple of friends over having a chat and throwing it all back together again, so time will tell if its sealed properly this time, hope so as I'm bored of that job!
Whilst i was at it Ialso tightened up the bolts around the crank seal, as they weren't super tight, in order to hopefully stop any small leaks from there.

I think engine will have to come out as i have a rear oil leak from somewhere as well, and for peace of mind i'll like to have it out top have a proper look at it and do them all at once. Also giving me the chance to sort out the engine bay properly, which would be nice!
Cleaned off some of the oil underneath, but its absolutely caked and don't fancy getting it all over the path any more than it has already dropped.

Well, new seal hasn't seated correctly despite being a genuine seal, which is a bit gutting :(

So in order to make sure that's not the only seal that's giving me issues I've borrowed an engine hoist and whipped the CA out for a nosey

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8028/7584314374_d18e861f25_c.jpg

This is getting to be a familiar sight at the moment

Everything tucked up to the sides, disconnected, labelled up and photographed ready to pull

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8425/7584315678_0326dfa16a_c.jpg

Finally out, utterly covered in oil, looks like half moons have been leaking down the back of the block and all over the bell housing.
There's been a leak around the gear lever as the cover has split so its been spilling out around the that
And as suspected the front crank seal hasn't sealed properly either, there must be a groove in the crank so I'll order a new one and not seat it as far into the block to avoid the groove. But I can now inspect that as its now in my garage!

De-greased and jet-washed the engine whilst its out and will do the same to the bay tomorrow

Some better pictures as promised

Bay after engine came out, very oily and rank

Degreased and power washed, much cleaner

As you can see, definitely a couple of oil leaks occurring here!

Degreased everything then powerwashed the majority of the oil and muck off

Since I'm replacing the half moons i thought I'd refurb the cam covers front and top, going with a bronze for the rockers and plain black for the coilpack cover and front cam cover, pics to follow when they're dry tomorrow

Gives me an opportunity to check the state of the cams, which look in great condition still, no gunking up anywhere

With the insides of the rockers looking just as clean as when I cleaned and replaced the rocker gaskets last year.

Took off the front set of cam covers to take a look for the oil leak, quick tip, cable tie the belt to the cams when its set to TDC so you don't have to faff around later re-timing everything.
Cleaned up all the oil before I took this snap, excuse the rope

Inspected the crank, and it looks like there's a little groove in there but not too much so I think I've fouled the seal when I've come to install it

So, I've cleaned up the block all round and all the wiring up as well, will be tightening the sump bolts also tomorrow after getting back from Nissan with my new seal and half moons

Update time, new seals in from Nissan, picked them up so there is 3 spare half moons at Chorley Nissan in stock as they come in a pack of 5 and i only 2
turns out the originals where rock solid, bent and full of liquid gasket, with bits of what i presume to be rocker gasket down by the end of the cams, luckily they hadn't been sucked into the rest of it! Quick glimpse of paint in the corner
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8153/7621077128_bc813dae05_z.jpg
New sump bolts installed, cleaned up the bottom of the sump and nipped them up nice and tight
New crank seal in, and so far *touch wood* is installed correctly and not weeping any oil as yet, but only been on a couple of short runs
No oil down the back of the block either, and no drips on the floor that I've found, as of yet.
So couple of snaps, this on of how the senders sit on the sandwhich plate if anyones struggling to get to get them sitting flush, this was with the alternator at its farthest adjustment and there was still a couple of mm space between that and the sender.

New rockers done in a ford aztek bronze, looks a bit dark really, was hoping it'd come out a tad lighter, but it really shines in the sun!

And back in again, mid way through

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8292/7621073704_2765338af8_z.jpg

Ended up re-making a gasket for the oil drain to the sump from the turbo, made a fatal mistake of not putting the main hole in it for the oil to drain through, so I've managed to cover the inside of my exhaust in oil... total rookie mistake as i'd done it in a rush! I only ran it until it warmed up so maybe 2-3 minutes before realised what i'd done, anyone know if it'll cause me any issues in the future?

But besides that minor hiccough and the massive amounts of smoke I'm getting from burning off that oil, everything seems to have gone well and runs as it should!
Also fixed my gear gaiter that sits on the back of the box so hopefully that'll keep the oil in the box instead of on the floor!
The boot is now dry after re-doing the rear lights too!

Having difficulty bleeding the clutch, but had a quick read up in S13 tech, figured out it must be the damper so will be looking at that tomorrow morning!

Was just about to head back to Lincoln, but had one of those epiphanies and checked when my MOT is due, turns out its today.. so booking that in in the morning and just hoping it flies through so i can get home in the evening! Never rains but it pours it seems at the moment!

new alloy rad and FMIC are on their way through the postal system! Will be fitting in two or so weeks when my Uni project is over. Will throw some pics up when they arrive.
For now
FMIC, shoutout to GDUK Dazl71 for this one

http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc393/GDUKJAPPARTS/D4A37BDB-CBAE-40C7-B64A-6415A71FBDB7-14970-00000F2BA34605FB.jpg
Has some overspray on it, but looks in ok nick and suits my tight budget. Hopefully bit of thinners and some careful toothbrush work, and it'll come up good as new.

Hopefully the new rad will cure the issues I have with water temp

Well my new (to me) FMIC arrived, spent some time sorting the fins out as some where a bit of a mess, the back is a little worse, but will go over it again when I have a bit more time to maximise the air flow through it.

Quick put together where I think the pipes go for now before I get it on the car to ensue everything's there

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8291/7814277718_02e01693d3_c.jpg

Also new toyosports Rad has arrived along with some Apex rad hoses

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8307/7814276644_e6954c6a67_c.jpg

New thermostat arrived from a chap on DW in portugal as it was quicker than Nissan!

With the thermostat holder in there as well

New Windscreen fitted today with new seals from Nissan, although the top part didn't come with them, so they had to reuse the old one :(
National Windscreens did the fitting, super top blokes, knew what they where doing had a good chat about cars and bikes and didn't mind me nosing around

Had a look under the old screen before they popped in the new one on and there's no rust whatsoever, it'd apparently had the screen replaced before as this one was pretty poorly fitted with tonnes of uneven mastic everywhere, they cleaned it all up made sure it was all flat, primed and then bonded the new one in.

Refreshing to see a job being done properly

And fitted.

Getting a few scraping issues, but that'll be sorted when i fit the fmic, will whip the wings off and tuck the loom a little better, might even extend the loom a few inches and sort all the fitment out as all the shut lines are screwed due to missing/snapped bolts. Can't wait to sort some brackets out for everything and tidy it all up nice!

Also going to make two new wing supports as they rusted to dust. Will be wire-brushing all the arches whilst the wings are off and rust proofing as I go, as I have time to this time and its looking a little sketchy

Started getting the car ready to accept my FMIC and sorting out my arches/wings etc

tried to see if i could get the normally battery to squeeze in, but it wont when the rads back in

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8437/7944454862_cd0cec07b2_z.jpg

Left it there for today, measured up for all of brackets i need to make. I've pulled it higher than the lower cross section under the rad to keep it away from grids/speedbumps etc

Need to pick up a new battery, going with a smaller one and just making a new box for it so keep everything simple.

Quick snap of what I've done to the lips on the arch sides and top you can see it flattened in these pictures

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8450/7957382932_e3945ac685_z.jpg

I've also undersealed both arches so it's now all protected with krust, two layers of hammerite and a layer of underseal, will probably do another coat of that tomorrow.
Started to cable tuck the driver's side, I've pulled the washer jet and rear washer jet tubes through the frame rather than round the outside for extra clearance under the wing as it was quite tight last time causing the panel gap to be out.

Finished up the arches with two coats of under seal and started to bolt things back together at last!

managed to get everything back on and running yesterday, managed to get down to mascrat manor without any testing, literally put it on the floor and set off. Everything was alright till the way home where my bodged bung where the dumpvalve had previously been on the fmic pipework popped out, easy fix though so making a proper one today. Only other hiccough was smashing my number plate off on the drive when i pulled up.

These ford ones are a much much better fit

So I've got a bit bored of not being able to listen to the radio, current aerial was all right, but the innards where broken, so wouldn't go up and stay up or retract, that added to the fact that I'm also not keen on it meant I got a glass mounted aerial.

Since I installed that it's not seemed to work properly probably because I left the box of tricks that connects via a big multi plug on the original aerial unplugged.
So plugged that back in after realising my stupidity turned the ignition and all was fine, and I could finally hear the radio again, but when I turned the key and started it up it lost all its signal again.

I think this may be down to the live that I've used to power it, as it was well grounded. So I've ripped it out as you can see before it was i bit of an eye sore from outside (rear quarter window the thing hanging down). My idea being to remove the box from the aerial part so that i can hide the box with the electronics and place the aerial piece some place better, maybe behind the blacked out part of the window

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7120/7536971256_21780295f5_z.jpg

So I've decided whilst i sort out the 12v+ Live issue i may as well make it a bit more hidden and visually acceptable, as the above attempt doesn't cut the mustard.

In true Blue Peter Style
Take one glass mount aerial:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8463/8078353882_94dfb93513_z.jpg

Remove rear screws and dismantle, leaving you with a circuit board and the long rectangle of the aerial, before I took the photo I'd removed the rectangle aerial piece from its holder and separated it from its wire which connects to the circuit board

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8475/8078362759_0d76ab5c70_z.jpg

Find a new length of wire and solder one half to the aerial like so;

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8193/8078362867_e9c80d63ba_z.jpg

Re-solder the other side of new wire to the correct part of the circuit board

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8475/8078355696_be88bb9c6a_z.jpg

and then reinstall gubbins back into the original box

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8470/8078356150_d8c009e3ce_z.jpg

I have hopefully left myself enough room for me to mount the plastig box within either the roof lining, or the B pillar plastics. This should then allow me enough length on the wire to position the aerial in a nicer position.

note: the red live wire is chopped and going to be soldered to a decent 12v ignitioned live when I re-install.

So had a chance to install the adapted glass mount aerial today, some pics:

antenna installed behind the blacked out part of the window

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8328/8080234862_61f13cceef_z.jpg

all the wiring tucked up nice, had to take the elctronics out the box as there wasn't enough room for it to sit behind the pillar trim. Electrical tape wrapped then double sided taped to the pillar metal to hold it

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8043/8080240975_b6408783b2_z.jpg

Pillar trim re-installed, as you can see its hidden nicely just behind the plastic

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8190/8080235752_7f65b2a615_z.jpg

And you can't see if from the outside either

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8051/8080235904_d1ba4782bc_z.jpg

Now this worked really well when the radio and centre console where apart, and testing everything to ensure it was all good before soldering. Then fine after soldering and installation but is completely rubbish when all the console is back together, all I get is static. Where as when the console is out on my lap or on the floor it picks up all the stations with great quality. So I re-earthed all the original radio connection, and also the frame work for that holds the radio in place. But still no joy. If I leave it on whilst I install it back into the console you can hear the static set in and then take over as its locked into place.

Anyone any ideas why this might be? I have my gauges earthed to the same place and they function just fine :S

Super confused, took it for a drive and still crap and wont find signal for any station.

Also just ordered some new steering rod ends as mine are looking a mess and im pretty sure they're the cause of my steering vibrations at about 60-80+ and whilst I change them I can sort my toe out on the front passenger wheel

Thought I'd go visit the girlfriend for a few days last week, but the car had a different plan!

I stopped off at Roy's to pick up some 4 stud hubs he had lying around so that the new studs I have could seat properly and so i could replace the rears as I've a dodgy bearing, the car had ran pretty well all the way back. But shortly after leaving Roy's I noticed the water temp smash through the red followed by a cloud of steam. Was pitch black but could tell that it was coming from around the back of the plenum/block area. Limped it home the last 3 miles keeping an eye on the oil temp gauge, which stayed below 100 thankfully. By this time it was 11pm so just pulled up the drive and left it to drain whatever was left of the fresh 20 quid coolant I'd replaced earlier in the week...

Had a nosy in the morning, filled it up and took it out to warm it up. Looked for the leak and couldn't find it no matter how many times I took it out. Needing to be back in Lincoln by 10am Sunday morning and it being now Thursday afternoon I decided to start the hunt, be it either a split pipe/knackered gasket or whatever. Before i did anything too drastic i replaced the one front hub that Roy had found, and re-seated the other side, whipped off the steering arm ends and replaced. Took it out for a drive to check and they seemed fine. Left the rears for later.

So then stuck it into the garage and ripped all the heater pipes off at the rear to find they where all fine bar one which seemed to not be tightened up so much at one end. So re=attached thinking I'd found the issue after a good few hours of catching my fat hands on every pointy/scratchy jubilee clip/connector/clutch and brake line there is around there.

No luck still leaking, this time its pouring out even on tick over under barely any pressure. So remove all the pipes and go get Roy's opinion on them, as I couldn't find anything wrong! Thankfully he gave me a couple of bits of pipe and suggested to just replace some with new pipe work from Halfords as its dirt cheap and sold by the meter. So with this done I whipped of the inlet manifold to see what else could be leaking as we'd found the area but still not the source. turns out it was the water pipe to the oil cooler exchange unit above the oil filter, it had split in 3 little places.

Replaced all the pipes I could with new 15.8mm piping, made new gaskets for both inlet pieces and thermostat housing and set about putting everything back on. This being saturday afternoon now it was dragging on. Joys of old clips hard to reach places! Couldn't get the fuel lines that go around the back of the plenum to sit right, thought i'd finished, went to start it up and it spat fuel everywhere. To get them back on i had to move the clutch master cylinder to the side to be able to get my hands back down again. Finally with that on I managed to get it started up and out for a test drive as no leaks where showing!

Hurrah I thought that's the end of that, all done sorted and replaced where needed, and again i had a water leak from somewhere, turned out to be the metal thermostat/radiator inlet pipe piece, tightened it up, still leaking. So made a new gasket again and replaced, still leaking! took it off had a look at the metal housing, and there's a ruddy great chip in it all the way to the edge!! Nightmare, needed to leave in 8 hours and the cars still a mess! Called Roy (again) and he had the part I needed to replace it with so bombed it down there at 11pm to pick it up and come back. Fitted it at 5:30am next morning and set off straight to Lincoln at 6am!

What a weekend, mega stressful, barely saw the missus, missed the Halloween party I was meant to be hosting and ended up loosing the footie match I was playing in Lincoln Sunday morning! So it all sucked! There's a wire out on my lambda sensor so used tonnes more fuel than usual, although it ran super smooth and very well. I'd forgotten what it was like to have power as I could barely drive it over 60mph before due to steering arm ends being so knackered.

Snapped up a fiberglass copy kouki spoiler which needs a little work to be mint off Roy, but before it goes on I have a lot of other body work to get on with so this will be a small part in comparison, as well as a new lambda sensor, which I need to get wired in asap.

If you read all that congrats and have some pictures as a reward

My view at 12am and 5:30am yesterday morning..

[IMG]http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8186/8135740187_bfd13d017c_c.jpg

Didn't manage to get any more pictures as it was such a rush, and just me working on it. Also grinded away the bonnet hinges so that i can open it 90deg since I cba taking the bonnet off every time this shit happens. Next up sort rear hubs out and the other front hub that I didn't replace, also figured why my abs light is on, the right hand side front abs sensor metal that sticks out towards the hub is snapped off!

Massive massive thanks to Roy, who also took me out in his RB S13 which is just utterly fantastic. Now I've seen it in the day light too its just immense :notworthy

So I'm having a bit of a parts collection at the moment for some interior stuff I've been looking at doing for a while, just to make it a bit more up to date OEM+ kind of deal.

Parents have offered to get me some stuff for xmas, nothing massive as we're all a bit skint at the moment, so perfect time to get these little bits ordered in.

Bits I'm going for are footwell lights, which I've picked up from a ford escort, as finding the JDM 180sx ones are like hens teeth, so figured I'll make my own.

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/FORD-FOOTWELL-LIGHTS-A-PAIR-/00/s/MzU2WDQ3NQ==/$(KGrHqZHJCYE9sgYCL1LBPn(wE0hp!~~60_12.JPG

Then a Z32 ignition ring led

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/90-96-NISSAN-300ZX-IGNITION-KEY-RING-LIGHT-Z32-/00/s/MzAwWDQwMA==/$(KGrHqZ,!oQF!K6tt)S5BQSWL-cTDg~~60_12.JPG

To make into one of these that i spotted over on here, but in white, as I'm not into this whole ricer LED look.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a159/final-gear/07052008733.jpg

Also ordered an interior light dimmer, which keeps the interior lights on for 60 seconds and then fades it out, something pretty useful, I'll be wiring this in so that not only does the centre light stay on for a while, the footwell and ignition ring also stay on long enough for you to get settled.

Also ordered a switch so that I can run a cut off to the fuel pump supply as added safety over and above my immobiliser for when it's parked in less desirable areas.
New dash bulbs for the instrument cluster, those 360 ones along with some red led's for the needles, when I figure out which ones I need and how I'll go about it.
I've also wired up my S14 map lights ready to be installed after a coat of matt black on the grey surround to see if I can get them fitted, as I use toll roads quite a bit, and the rear S13 light might as well not be there when routing for change in the dark.

I'll obviously do a write up on how to fit/adapt these parts to fit when I get my hands on them after xmas.

Cheers buddy, not sure its better than some I've seen on here! Some really decent 240's for inspiration on here.

Definitely done a lot, seeing it all on one page puts it into perspective! There's quite a lot of the early stuff that I haven't documented either, mainly through working on my own on it.

Still a lot to come, mainly visually as its quite scruffy at the minute from the outside, but will be sorted in time!

Yeah man, getting stuck in and seeing it through's been a bit of an epic journey, but its taught me a lot of things that I wouldn't know that'll hopefully serve me in the future. Would rather get it done and sorted rather than just give up and buy one that someone else has done, because you'd probably end up with the same mess but paying more to start with!
Hopefully for a bit it should be just be bits that I want to do and then I can get out and smash it sideways and have the fun I thought I was going to have originally!

Got my stereo brackets through this morning so I can relocate the stereo to behind the centre console plastic as it was intended to be!
Cheers Ben at Emperor Garage, quick delivery perfect

Here's a quick write up of what I've done

This is how it's been since I've had it

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8343/8185510615_e8655fe28a_c.jpg

From behind

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8349/8185546890_e7d3fd2953_c.jpg

Slopy fitting down the sides, pet peeve right here.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8485/8185507417_03342625c5_c.jpg

How it looks with the front off, cage fitment is pretty rubbish also

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8057/8185544374_731279bc95_z.jpg

Mocked up headunit and flip down din unit onto the brackets, because of the size of the unit itself you could have seen loads of gaps around the edges so I made a black card surround to fill the gap

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8339/8185539750_7d75f90c01_c.jpg

Fits really nice, and looks spot on too built up

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8487/8185541270_d7b741373a_z.jpg

No fitted pictures yet, its too dark outside.

Also fitted new battery terminal adapters as my small battery uses small terminals, so stripped the old ones off and got the new ones off, now I don't have to worry about them falling off :wack:

Installed pics

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8068/8188508164_3337d93367_c.jpg

I used one of my graphics pens to black out the inside edges in black so that they would be less noticeable, this is how the card surround looks without the headunit front

The Moose, Why Moose? Because I don't know.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8484/8188783776_0cc9ba3856_c.jpg

Looks tonnes better than before, pics remind me I need to re-dye my carpet!

I've also relocated my iPod cable into the centre console arm rest glove box, saves me having to reach over to the drop down glove box every time I plug it in (lazy I know)
Plan on pulling a small LED into there so that I can see when I open it up too, wire it up to the one in the ash tray.

So I've had a few bits and pieces arrive through the post, ready for use after xmas!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8349/8199445265_d80c2aeec2_c.jpg

Few cheeky bits I've not mentioned yet in there, steering hub, snap off release, switch and a matt sunstrip (very ricer, not sure if I'll like it yet, but I'll put it on and see first)

Got a wheel coming too but not saying what it is until i have it here and inspect it see if it's worth it. Switch will be for a hidden fuel pump cut off switch, added safety when parked in dodgy areas. I do have a different switch position in mind for this, which is very discreet and you just wouldn't know it was there if I can pull it off, but it needs a few attempts to get it right, and this switch will do until I've perfected my uber mega discreet awesome switch.

Also tried out my footwell lamps, might need to order some more of these LED bulbs check out the difference

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8060/8199446345_b855baeda8_z.jpg

I'll be upgrading all the bulbs to LED to match, including the over head lamps. Also managed to get hold of a 180sx map light including bracketry so I've ditched the idea of retro fitting the s14 lights.

Have a couple of things in the pipe line at the moment z32 maf & t28 and elbow pretty much sorted, just waiting on some 444cc's or more to crop up (I missed out on some the other day that went super cheap on the bay, gutted!)
These will all probably go on some time next year along with a re-map which should see me at stage 3, but i'll make sure all my cooling system and everything else is running properly before then obviously.

Also started my kouki savings pot recently, so if a few things crop up cheaper than I can buy new, but in good condition, bits could come in relatively quickly, aiming to pick up the lot before April. Looking at Magic Aero bits as the genuine stuff is way out of my price range for now and the quality of his work is just top notch.

Hope you all had a super christmas and santa brought you all the gifts you wanted! I know I got what I wanted, since I bought all mine!

Fitted my Nardi Replica, for now without horn or indicator cancellation or quick release as it was raining and getting dark, its also on the piss! nothing like doing things right first time hey!

All I did was to remove the 10A fuse for the horn in the engine bay, then remove the cover in the centre of the steering wheel, undo the 19mm centre bolt, wiggle the steering wheel in and out, left to right, and voila off it came.

To re-fit without horn, place boss over steering column splines (so the wheel will be straight, unlike how I did it), then replace the nut, tighten it up, and bolt up the wheel.

I'll do a quick write up on how to wire in the horn and sort out an indicator cancelling fix when I come to do it, but for now here's it fitted.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8499/8315208402_eaf2ee99e9_z.jpg

Seems to fit quite nice, yes its not as solid as the real thing, but I won't be yanking on it to test its solidarity. There's only me that drives it so it should be just fine for now. It feels really nice and comfortable plus I think looks pretty well inside too. Only little thing that bothers me is this gap between the boss and the steering column surround, so I will at some point be making a cover, extending the column moldings to hide this, as it looks rubbish with it. These need to come off anyway to allow me to fit my keyring light so that won't be such a huge issue to sort out.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8218/8314159925_7e229a96d0_z.jpg

I've also fitted my LED bulb in the centre interior light and by jove its bright! Apparently my phone camera doesn't like night time photography with long exposure so its created many pixels instead..

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8499/8315766192_a20995a3df_z.jpg

Might need to give the light fixture a one coat of tinting spray on the inside to just calm it down a little, will have to wait and see.

Few quick ones for today, put on my sun strip, still not sure on it yet, but it'll at least keep the sun out of my eyes whilst its winter. So will decide on that later, also straightened my steering wheel up!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8217/8317884217_3eca21bea2_z.jpg

I've also been on the LED offensive again, and started on my gauge cluster

Mid way through:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8218/8318937846_3c87c525c5_z.jpg

And finished, although for some reason I now have my petrol light on all the time.. will look into that tomorrow when it's light again, might just be a case of the bulb being in the opposite way, but if anyone can shed some light on the situation then that'd be awesome

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8496/8318936550_5acabecec4_z.jpg

I managed to sort out the LED's for the cluster the outer edges where a little dull, as the smaller LED's weren't lighting so turned them 180 deg, and they're now working Petrol lights managed to go off somehow also whilst it's been out.

Caught the back of the clocks on the steering column and shorted the clock backlight, so had to do a little solder work to sort that out.

much better dispersion of light now, battery and petrol symbols light up just as much as everything else now

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8211/8322658024_ddf44b07ac_c.jpg

Also whilst I was there I had a check to see if the Key ring light would fit over the ignition barrel

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8079/8321573563_081f9775aa_z.jpg

Yep its a winner! Bought a dremel today so I can work on the ignition ring tomorrow, also fitted a different column top surround to get rid of the little red LED that was attached to nothing for a cleaner LED free one. Also made a fill piece to fill the gap where the new hub boss is and it looks much much neater. Will grab a picture of this tomorrow as it was too dark to get one when I'd finished.

Decided to get a head start on my ignition ring light

Started with the standard ignition bezel

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8075/8323494970_889e265bcb_z.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8084/8322432371_b10329c1f6_z.jpg

Ground down the inner part of the bezel so that you can still see the width of it

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8214/8323489676_7a8d0dd33f_z.jpg

Then Dremel'd it out slowly to the size of the light ring, then polished the clear plastic part of the ring light

And voilaaaa

Started work on my footwell lights today, making the original holes fit the Ford Escort lights I managed to source

Both original light holders are a little too small for the light covers I managed to get hold of, so I've set about making them the correct size to accept them.

Quick write up on how I've gone about it, same process for both light holes

On the back of the panel there is a little raised area like so

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8359/8326665202_722e760b7f_z.jpg

File or dremel this down like so (also gave the panel a wipe as it was filthy) and then I widened it a few mil as well and neatened up the edges

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8217/8326654704_58312130cc_z.jpg

Then created a square to accommodate the footwell light, for this i used a spare piece of s13 interior that i had lying around to keep the colour/texture the same

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8211/8325603433_7e5a2fccc3.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8497/8325598977_c3488d7cba.jpg

Then secure in place, I used aroldite for this as that's all I had to hand

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8213/8325646105_12d9180d14_z.jpg

repeat for the other panel and the final product should look like so

Under steering column panel

Passenger side kick panel

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8074/8326647526_254f0456e9_c.jpg

Can't wait to get these hooked into the loom

Also some quick snaps of the steering column cover to bridge the gap behind the hub adapter

In case the fuel light goes off again in the future, just change the light bulb with an old fashioned bulb. I just did the LED light swap and had the same problem, although mine didn't go off. The clusters don't really accept the LED light bulb for that specific spot, it might be a capability issue with the fuel sensor.
Regardless, great build. I'm inspired by the footwell lights, and basically everything you've done.

Right update time, got a little bit further with my LED footwell lights and keyring and 180sx maplight upgrade

Started prepping the map light, took it apart and gave it a clean up with some soapy water and the rough side of a scouring pad

That's that painted up nicely in map light so put the new bulbs into the housing, needed to bend the negative upright a little bit further back to make them sit snug but that's no big deal

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8221/8339073125_e8344d239c_z.jpg

I've also built myself a new wiring loom for the footwell and ignition ring lights so now they're all connected
Please forgive the chair and cusion combo... it's not mine..

Just need to get them in and try out the fade out unit as I don't have a 12v supply to test it in the house with. Should look real nice hopefully not too OTT, I also want to wire them in to a separate switch too but need to figure that out at another time I think

Not managed to get my fade out box to work so for now they go off when the doors are shut.
I did blow up a 9v battery when testing my circuits so chances are I've cooked its insides, but I might be able to fix it with a box of tricks I have somewhere

Can't wait to get the 180sx map light in now :D

So besides a slipping clutch I still made the journey home to lincoln where the car will now sit till I can get hold of a new clutch, don't really want to drive it till I've got that sorted.

I didn't really explain how i managed to wire in all the lighting so I'll give it a go now.

I ran positive and negative to both footwell lights, and then split off these on the drivers side and attached them to the corresponding pigtail on the light ring. Basically like a minature loom, spade connectors at either end on all parts just incase I need to remove any of them in the future for whatever reason.
This loom runs up both A pillars past the sunroof and will connect to the wires that go into the centre interior light.
I also put in a take off for another positive on this loom from the meeting point of both sides that will feed the front map light.

So for this new footwell and keylight loom I connected the positive to the 12v constant live feed ( I think this is the Red and black striped wire) and the negative to the Red and White striped wire. This means that the new lighting follows that of the interior light and comes on when the doors open and goes off when closed.

For the front map light I connected the negative feed to the black wire on the interior light, and took the positive feed from the extra take off from the other lights. This means that the map light will be constantly able to be switched on/off as it should.

I think I'll draw a diagram, might explain it a little better. I couldn't get the fade out capacitor box to work, I think I fried it but as the spade connectors are already there its a simple job of getting another and sticking it inline and hopefully it'll work!

So that's that explained onto the interior work for the map light

Put the map light cluster back together, polished up the clear lenses as they where a bit grim and added spade connectors to make it detachable

Next on the back of the map light and on the bracket there looked like there was some squares of sponge for some reason, so I replicated them gluing them with aroldite

Bracket glued at the back ontop of the sponge to the roof skin, then screwed in at the front, hole where already there, bonus.

The passenger footwell didn't seem to be working for that last picture, but I took out the bulb and tightened up the connections a bit in the bulb holder and problem solved! Was running late so didn't grab any more pics with it working. Also gave some of the interior fixings a fresh lick of matte black since I chipped them taking them off.
On the way home my boost gauge back light disappeared, not entirely sure why but I stopped at a services wiggled wires, checked the plug at the back of it and it was all connected so I think that's knackered. It's a cheap one so it was in my plan to change them anyways.
It's completely changed the interior at night, pretty subtle super chuffed!

Next. Clutch.

By the way great job on painting the map light. What kind of paint did you use for primer and color?

steve109
01-07-2013, 12:24 PM
Cheers man, just standard plastic primer and standard black matte spray paint from a local paint store. It does chip it you aren't careful because I didn't key the area due to the pattern on the maplight and wanted to keep it this way. But its not something that takes a lot of wear, like the other fixtures I've done in the same way they should be fine :)

Also ordered some brake line fixings to remove the ABS as it's not worked for a year its about time I got rid of it

Over the next two weeks it'll be going under the spanner and getting all the above put on bar the 444's and Z32 maf as I've got to wait till a friends t28 is free and mapping time. I'll also be swapping out the intake plenum to solve a threaded bolt on the thermostat housing and sorting a snapped elbow stud out as well so that should keep me busy for a little while at least.

Been curious about your gasket leak ever since you got the car, I know you're on your third gasket now since you owned the car. Just want to know if your 2nd Nissan one is holding up fine. kept telling myself should have got it machined for a superior seal while the motor was out instead if going through the replacement process again but you seem to fit it already. Build is awesome read through the whole thing.

let me know how it is.

Super helpful that mate.. I will, I've got an OEM release bearing and spigot to go in from what I've read mainly people have issues with this when running the supplied release bearing, normal flywheel and not running them in properly. So all the things I'm not going to be using/doing. As far as I'm concerned its turned out about 400 pounds cheaper for me to do this than get the equivalent from the UK, with a 12,000 mile or 6 month warranty on it I'll soon find out whether its any good before then. I'm also not running much power above standard so should be fine till I upgrade too.

2nd gasket has been fine buddy, I think it was mainly my installation of the first genuine one that ruined it. Had no problems with it since I did it properly. The none genuine one was garbage though, not great quality. No need to get it machined, just offset the seal so that it wasn't sat in any groove that could have been there.

From what I know is they use parts from big name manufacturers in their kits. So the disc may be act and the plate exedy..etc..but that's what the company states.
As far as chatter...ho cares..my stock Infiniti clutch chatters like a mad man.

Yeah exactly, my current one chatters and I believe its a standard one, be-it knackered but standard! I've also heard the same, basically rebranded big name parts. I don't mind either way as I'll be going down the RB25det route next year, but need it replaced as mines slipping at the moment and this was the cheapest uprated one I could get. I'll be writing up how I get on with it anyway so people can see and find out how it does perform

Well todays been a bit of a long day, up at 5 to drop the woman off at work. Couldn't start with the loud stuff so started to clean up the plenum and make some new gaskets.

Looks pretty clean up in the picture above but the top was filthy, so set about cleaning it with some Gunk and then a power wash later on for it to come out like this

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8335/8424016811_662c0c7d11_z.jpg

Replacing all of the pipe work too for new hose, nothing special just new hose, can see one in at the front there the rest will be done too.

Had to wait till after lunch before I could get in the garage so compression tested it after a quick warm up

Very pleased got 138-140 psi across all 4, dry warm test throttle closed. Spark plugs look like its running a bit lean, white tipped

So then onto the real work

'We got no engines do we? Do we??'

So the engines out and sat in the garage, going back out in a mo to split the gearbox off and get the clutch out

Updates shall keep a coming

Looking good mate! I like all of the LED upgrades!

Also on a scale from 1-10 how bad is a clutch to install? Is lining it up a huge issue? I will be doing it from under the car in my garage with a buddy or 2. My first time to do a clucth... Any tips would be awesome!

Looking forward to what the rest of this build brings!

Cheers!

Cheers man, I'd say it's an easy one, round 3-4. Undr the car will be more difficult because of the lack of space but it won't be the end of the world if you can raisebit high enough.

Tips wise make sure everything's torqued up correctly and all the surfaces are degreased. Also get your flywheel skimmed if you're not replacing. It's always a good idea to replace things like the clutch release bearing and crank.spigot and check other parts for wear and replace where needed.

Lining up.was a slight pain but just takes a little time and it'll get there.

Good luck!

Engine finally back in place, I didn't unbolt the prop so had to slide it in whilst the engine was dropped in so took a while and dropping it onto the mounts was a bit of a ball ache as I lifted the engine flat instead of at a slight angle so the mounts where too high/too low all the time

Should be about 2 hours tomorrow and it'll be ready to fire up see how it all works! Exited again, hope its just all gone well..

02-05-2013, 07:27 AM
Its all back up and running, bit of vibration when coasting in gear between 3000-25000 revs, other than that its been perfect. I think this could be because of my gearbox/engine mounts/propshaft doh-nut being a bit worn so moving around a little too much.

Currently put 200 miles on it so far and its very bitey and grips well. Been driving like a granny barely any boost to bed it in so will let you all know more after its 500 mile bed in period.

Well my chrome bezels have finally arrived, they are actually great quality! Quite impressed, so got straight on it and sprayed them up today, still need to lacquer them tomorrow

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8364/8445223701_66cfe563c7_z.jpg

I'm getting what feels like really bad axle tramp at the moment when setting off at low speed, this used to happen before the clutch swap but because the aggressiveness of the engagement its amplified it somewhat. Need to go round the whole rear and give all the bolts a good tighten mainly subframe/diff. I have noticed quite a lot of slop in the diff though so it could be related to that. Fix one problem find 10 more!

Few bits I've got on order..

A pillar trims - as I'll be moving my gauges over summer
Rear quarter interior panel - Mines got a crack in where I was a little too heavy handed
front hub (as mines causing some mega wheel wobble)
Wiper Pivots (as mine have disintegrated and now only the drivers side clears the screen)
Fuel tank and filler neck as mines started to leak again
4.5 inch Japspeed exhaust with middle and rear silencers (mins a bodge job off an s14 with no middle silencer and the rear box is knackered with air leaks everywhere) Hopefully this will mean I can run without the rear bung in and not be too loud

Probably wont be fitted for a while but least I'll have them

Cheers man, hopefully more to come soon. Will get those dial rings painted and lacquered and thrown on next week and maybe a few other little things sorted out

Picking up that list of parts tomorrow so that should hold some fun for a bit. Need to find more money for more bits!

steve109
02-09-2013, 11:52 AM
Right! Clutch has now done a massive 513 miles inside a week, so gave it some welly for the last 10 miles, held fantastic felt very confident using it and the flywheel makes quite some difference. I know I've not driven it properly now for nearly a month but it does feel quite a bit quicker under acceleration. Feels very strong and I'm super super happy with it, slight whiff of clutch smell but that's not a surprise since its the first time I've hammered it. Will keep you up to date as it gets used/kicked/abused

My vibration is still there, but its definitely coming from the rear, and I now believe its either the rear passenger driveshaft and/or rear passenger bearing as it only makes noise off throttle now and sounds similar to the last one I had that was going! I already have two rear hubs to swap out when i get the time anyway which will give me time to inspect the driveshaft and go round tightening some bolts.

So today I took a long roadtrip to Jonny Wilkinsons garage of wonder to pick up the parts mentioned above, minus a rear interior panel as it had a scratch in it so wasn't an improvement on my current panel. Had a look around his S13 that's in progress, some great work going on in that mans shed I have to say! Makes mine look like a right mess! Uber jealous :smitten:

So onto the bits I've picked up

Japspeed Exhaust - will look great with a bit of elbow grease

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8510/8458189065_c25cbca98f_z.jpg

Fuel tank, looks to be leak free which is an improvement on mine! Will give this the same treatment as the last one before it goes in.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8096/8459295746_5d41b22e29_z.jpg

Front hub, genuine 40k, even the backplate is still shiny!

Wiper linkages, with bushes just need a clean

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8506/8459298938_7c40beebe4_z.jpg

much needed wiper pivots! Look to be in good nick also

And finally A pillar covers

Managed to get a little done on the car this week

Replaced both rear hubs and checked everything for tightness, there's a little less play in the rear drivetrain now it seems. But the proof will be driving it tomorrow. Going to tighten up the rear subframe when I put it back on the floor tomorrow.

Also swapping the front hub out for the new one from Jonny in the morning. Wont get time to do the wipers just yet though. Few pics as I was working on my bill again!

Back in its home..
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8505/8477449658_9a6095e993.jpg

Apparently I need a new rear tyre.. Getting swapped in the morning for one of my old Yokohamas

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8240/8476358735_c229cae37b.jpg

Wheel wobble basically gone with fixing the front hub. Can actually drive at 70+ without feeling like its going to all fall apart and try and kill me now sooo much better!

Still got my knocking and still have the vibration between 2k-3k slowing down in gear quite annoying. I've not tightened anything underneath yet so could be that will have a look tomorrow.

Hubs swapped at the back, drive shafts seem to look ok from what I can tell splines all in good nick. Little bit less play with different hubs but not really changed the knocking which is a shame, but they where definitely tight into the hub splines though. So looking more like diff/prop/box issue.

No pics as I was in a hurry!

Few other bits and bobs sorted out today, finished spraying up the chrome bezels. Bit of a pig to spray due to their shape, had to raise them up off my painting surface so that they didn't glue them selves to it.

Fixed my boost gauge take-off as I snapped my t-piece when i re-did all my hoses so had to get rid of it for a while.
Also didn't reconnect the negative for the temp and pressure sensors when I put the engine back in so rectified that too

Got them from here mate

NISSAN SILVIA S13 Dash Dials Gauge Chrome Rings Bezel | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NISSAN-SILVIA-S13-Dash-Dials-Gauge-Chrome-Rings-Bezel-/320601502659?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4aa556b3c3)

Seller was great as I had to sort out re-delivery since I was away when they where delivered and returned back to the seller and had no problems doing so. Just sprayed them up gloss black and super glued them in

No polish though

Stuck her up on my 'ramps'

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8511/8498093792_1dd441f721_z.jpg

And got underneath to have a fiddle around. Turns out I got another quarter turn on the subframe bolts with a normal spanner, so need to get a long arm on there and give them a good tightening. This has toned down the knocking when setting off quite a lot, so I think as soon as I've tightened them up with a long arm that should be gone, along with giving the diff mount bolts a quarter turn as well.

Looks like there's a little slop in the diff, about 3mm I'd say when turning the prop/drive-shafts and then a little play between the diff and drive-shaft through the CV joints either side maybe 1mm ish, so not as much as I thought there was going to be. Doesn't seem to be any play in the prop joints, so I think my vibration is down to needing to torque the gearbox mounting bolts up and replace the one bolt that disappeared, I think that'd make a big difference. I'd have done them up today but my 17mm socket seems to have gone amiss!

Always tighten your nuts people :ghey:

did a little bit yesterday

Went to swap out the exhaust for the one from jonny, had it all off and offered the new one up, but its 4 inches too long so everything doesn't line up. Possibly due to the length of my downpipe/de-cat pipe, so what i'll do is when I have access to my welder is cut a section off and fit a flexi and shorten it at one end, but of hassle but never mind will only take a day for me to sort it out.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8528/8503282395_210fed67b2_z.jpg

Picked up a battery relocation kit off a mate (one with the beamer) so that'll be handy so I can move the battery and sort out my water bottle filler neck again and de-clutter the bay a little.

Also added more cambers for cool points, but I'm going to put on a little more as it still just catches the front arches
Tightened up all the bolts underneath and the vibration at 3k is still there, so not entirely sure what it is, might be that the clutch plate isn't aligned properly which is a ball ache, and don't fancy sorting that but I cant see it being much else now.. unless its just because the diffs poo'd itself into being a single wheel spinner..

Its a weird rumble noise that then vibrates through the chassis, I've read lightened fly's do sometimes cause this but it feels a bit more mental than what I'd consider to be 'normal' anyone got any ideas?

Only when in gear, its slightly there when accelerating through that range but very slight, not there at all in neutral, is fine when revved and held in the vibrations rpm range, just coasting in any gear coming down between 3000 and 2500. Other than that it drives perfect and seems normal. I do have a small chunk out of my crank pulley, but i'd have thought it i was to feel that it would be any time not just in gear yes?

Ideas people?

Unexpectedly had the afternoon off uni, and having reminded myself that I've owned a quick release since christmas it might be an idea to give fitting it a go. I also sorted out two of the LEDs in the dash cluster above the petrol light and the battery light out that decided to stop working and the clock bulb that's been flickering enough to induce an epileptic fit.

Bulbs sorted

Did a few bits today, sorted my passenger wiper pivot out. Took apart the better parts out of the two from Jonny and put them together to make one passenger pivot. Sanded the pivot stalk smooth and re-greased and put the newer plastic triangle part on. Now moving super smooth, re-greased all the little ball joints. Will need to replace the divers side one, but there's play in all of the parts I have left so will find another good one sometime soon.

This is what the worst one looked like from Jonny

Put on another sunstrip, this time a gloss one but put on with a heat gun, so hopefully it wont come off again down the motorway!

Sorted also a small grinding noise coming from the rear, re-greased and sorted the rear alignment arms. Also put a little more gearbox oil in too. So new pics!

No updates at all, just a list of stuff I need to get done over my uni Easter break whilst I'm back home for two weeks.

ABS Removal - Need to buy new calliper nipples
Battery Relocation - need to buy fuse and terminal box mounting point
Weld/rust proof and spray bay
Spray rocker covers
Sort out boot area
Dye interior carpets
Seal bootlid bolts so I stop getting a pond in wheel well
Raise the front half an inch and soften the damping
Chop/weld/fit exhaust I bought ages ago now
Refurb new fuel tank and fit
Underseal under the rear end and clean off current shit fest of road salt

And no doubt sort some other niggling stuff that's been irritating me of late.

Depending on funds, T28, 444cc and Z32 + map if I can find a standard map for stage 3 for Nistune knocking around to write to my board. If anyone has one hit me up via PM.

So only a small list of stuff I'd like to get done in two weeks, but other than that it's been running/driving completely fine and awesome

So I've just picked up a few bits today

New headlight bulbs and LED sidelights as for some reason one of each of mine have gone kaput.

Also ordered new brake bleed nipples M10x1 over all length 26mm, at a guess thats what's in there since the answer doesn't seem to be around.

Also picked up a set of apex seat subframes so they can attach to one of these that I'm picking up this week

http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/122/4/9/sparco_pro_2000_by_besmusk.jpg

Also ordering a few bits for my battery relocation, a 300A junction box, 2 175A mega fuses and mega fuse box from VWP so I'm all ready to roll next week.

Kidney supports are also in the post so they should be here this week also

steve109

Well its in! (apologies for the lack of clean anything at the moment..)

Apex rails and kidney back supports came in this morning so I got straight on it and got it fitted.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8381/8617126352_589999b740_z.jpg

Now it does sit pretty high, but at a massive 5'8" it suits me just fine. I'd say its very close to the original seat position as I didn't have to adjust any of the mirrors.

I do need to adjust it over slightly to the left by about 2cm but to do this I need tools I don't have here so that'll come later, I may also add a couple of extra holes to make it sit lower when I take it out to dye my carpet next week see how that goes.

Super comfy, awesome to sit in. Drove around in traffic for about an hour before just to get used to driving with it and its fantastic. Makes the car feel very tight and a lot more useable as you can feel everything whilst being very secure.

I can see myself driving like a loon for a while..

Started a bit of work on the car today.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8384/8632102170_7bec4c840e_z.jpg

Stripped all the interior out to remove the carpet for cleaning and dying. Then put my bucket seat back in so I can drive it around still.

Under the carpets are in a lot better condition that I thought, little bit of surface rust and a load of dust. And my welds seem to still be solid and intact so please with that. Few snaps of it being emptied.

I'm going to board and carpet the whole rear and put the battery behind the drivers seat and box it in. I was going to repair the rear interior trim and dye it as well but they're way too broken, so I'll find some better condition ones and then dye those.

few snaps with it stripped. I'll give everything a quick de-rust and Krust session and then paint it before carpet/sound deadening goes in.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8383/8632102116_3ccecc0034_z.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8396/8632101954_045a6fb1d1_z.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8387/8632101896_03b98e696f_z.jpg

Also fitted new headlight and sidelight bulbs and a new breather filter for my catch can.

Had a massive scare, turned it over after fitting the breather filter and plumes of smoke filled my road.. Luckily its cleared up and stopped now, everything seems to be running fine. So I must have disturbed something somewhere when I tried to relocate it somewhere else.

More tomorrow folks.

Painted out the inside to protect it after doing a bit of rust protection. It's not too neat but it's never going to be seen as the carpet will be there.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8264/8634620841_8f5f7a612f_z.jpg

Ordered some new carpet, as I'm boarding out the rear half. Will be rust proofing and painting part of the boot as well to protect it.

More tomorrow

I've also sorted out the basic boxing out of the rear and put in the battery box in behind the seat. Will take some photos later.

Decided it's going to look awesome.

steve109

Installed fuse holder, fuse, negative to chassis (seat belt point) and made up the ends of the positive battery cable today ready to feed through tomorrow. Also put the junction box into the engine bay ready to go. No pictures of these just yet, will grab some tomorrow.

I do however have pictures of the internal boarding out though. This is only loosely laid in there nothing is tied down just yet, as there's a few little bits to finish first, like boxing out the top of the battery to make an opening lid and obviously needs carpeting too.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8249/8640151838_a2e63a2293_z.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8108/8640151392_e1dcf49180_z.jpg

That's mainly yesterdays progress no photos of the inside from today, but I've also sorted out all the mounting points for the boarding.

Petrol tank has been cleaned and given a lick of paint, ready for some underseal underneath then it'll be ready to install over the weekend.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8544/8640202499_615aa1f5ae_z.jpg

Also decided that the kouki rep spoiler from magic aero that I got at christmas is going to get put on.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8398/8640201777_70523fa9bc_z.jpg

Hopefully the carpet will be here tomorrow so I can get the interior all back together.

steve109
04-15-2013, 09:28 AM
Battery cable put through the wing and through the bulk head and into place behind the seat and joined up.
Wing on.
Carpet turned up so I've layed that onto the wooden frame, looking pretty good! Dead excited to get it in. Should be done tomorrow in time for the manchester Jap meet sunday.
Old tank out, new tank in and taken the exhaust off so I can chop up the other one with the middle silencer to fit tomorrow.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8406/8643408967_85660ff358_z.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8536/8644505068_8869df4214_z.jpg

So tomorrow, fit out carpeted boarding, chop exhaust, weld exhaust, fit exhaust, re-fit interior, hook up the battery and electrics and drive.

Battery tray going in with the mega fuse holder all connected.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8123/8646100630_2ccc4063ee_z.jpg

Rear seat box section in but not clean and tight. Looks a lot better in real life than it does in this picture, but when its all clean and tidy then it will be awesome. Will be securing that lid down when the electrics are ready to be hooked up finally.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8396/8646099760_15a1883324_z.jpg

Chopped up the centre section of the exhaust but no matter how i manouver it I've no idea how it'll fit at all, so I've just tidied up the end piece of the newer one , re-welded a patch on and that'll be going on as the silencer box should be in better condition than the one that's on there atm.

Really need to sort the water into the boot problem I have, boot bolts and drivers rear light cluster is leaking at the moment so couldn't put in the rear boot section of the carpet.

Then just need to cable tidy the front section of battery cable and then re-fit interior and its ready to go.

Got the interior back in and went to the meet down Manchester, arrived just after 3pm so most people had disappeared already but it was a decent test drive to make sure everything was working as it should.

interior is much quieter and is such a nicer place to be, only a couple of bits to sort out and a few little bits to put back into it as I only put the bare minimum back in to get me to the meet!

Went to start it up but forgot new petrol tank = no fuel so needed to fill it up!

Quick snap

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8396/8649822830_811dcd61a5_z.jpg

Will get some pics up of the interior tomorrow in the day light after I've hoovered it all out!

Ran really well, new rear exhaust sounds good but still need the bung in as its still way too loud! But it's a better tone none the less

So the interior is done for now, everything is back in and bolted down and nothing seems to vibrate or bang around which is such a change to before its unreal. I've also put all the rear boot and boot back/lock panels back in which have basically been out for over 6 months so they make a small difference in noise control as well.

Been on a pic whoring session in the last hour so I'll just throw them all here and let them do the talking. Its not quite to the standard I was hoping for but its a much needed improvement. I'll probably re cover the battery box top as there's a little of the boxing exposed still. I had a bit of left over carpet so I've just thrown that on top of the boot boarding for the time being which is why it doesn't look cut to shape, but the boarding underneath is

So! I've got a few bits coming to me soon

Ordered a radio din slot gauge holder to move the pillar pod and neaten it all up. Gone with one of these with the three gauge holes

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Gauge-Holder-DIN-Universal-Gauge-holder-Scangauge-holder-52mm-hole-/00/s/NjAwWDgwMA==/z/FzYAAOxy9eVRLQwX/$(KGrHqN,!h8FEY3US25WBRLQwWv-FQ~~60_12.JPG

Also getting a newer crank pulley off Jonny, as mines got a massive chip out of it

Just ordered a set of Japspeed Polyurethane engine and gearbox mounts as I think mines the cause of some horrid vibrations and knocking.

http://www.japspeed.co.uk/uploads/images_products_large/804.jpg

Just hoping they won't be too harsh, heard mixed reviews. Some people moan about it vibrating everything, some people say you barely notice so will see for myself and if I can't handle it then I'll sell them on.

Not that the rest of the car isn't getting a little hardcore now anyway is it.. haha. If anyone's going down to Japfest I'll be there for you to have a mooch around it.

I've also booked into a dyno day so will be able to see if she's healthy and what power is left in her!

Up to a few things at the moment

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2888/8777270840_05aba54840_z.jpg

Rockers off to change to Red, since the brown was crap, flaking and just not as awesome as I was expecting. They're currently being stripped and sanded ready for primer and paint tomorrow.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7367/8770706767_69fd959f04_z.jpg

In the process of changing the engine mounts and gearbox mounts at the moment, all the bolts are off ready for instillation tomorrow.

Had to make an exhaust bracket for the gearbox mount, which was unexpected. but here's what I've done so far

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2874/8770703813_799472aa86_z.jpg
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2850/8777268844_cd6f1ba9c1_z.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7303/8770707649_540acfe96d_z.jpg

so that's all set up ready to drop in tomorrow, the two outside bolts are just in there to keep them safe and hold the exhaust mount bracket on for now so I don't loose it but they wont be needed when putting onto the gearbox it seems.

I've also destroyed my pillar pod and started to mount up the gauges into the centre console

Chopped up the old little drop down din box I had under the stereo, so it could accommodate the gauges and also the gauge holder I bought so it'd sit flush with the stereo face with a dremel that didn't seem so impressed...

It's no where near finished yet, that's just a quick mock up of how it'll look. Hopefully I can get it sitting a little better as it's not quite to my liking at the moment.

Tomorrow I'll be installing the engine and gearbox mounts and hopefully taking off the rear section of the exhaust to alter the hangars so it doesn't foul everywhere, start to spray up the rockers and maybe in the evening start to finish the centre console. So busy few days ahead.

No images of the new ones in yet, will get them tomorrow, but they are now in. Had to leave one of the locking washers off as the drivers side engine mount bolt wasn't long enough to allow me to get the nut on with both washers in. I'll just keep an eye on it.

Gearbox mount and exhaust hangar all bolted up.

That's it for tonight, hopefully get the exhaust off and smash it with a hammer and heat until it stops hitting the diff and lacquer the rocker tops/polish them up and fit with new bolts and then fit the gauge holder

Update from ages ago;

Installed the new gauges and new a-pillar covers, can see the drivers side in the background of one pic

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2828/8795687287_dd2e400fcf_z.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8260/8806264864_9d66fd130f_z.jpg

swapped the passenger a-pillar too as it had this scuff on it, no pics of the new one just yet.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7329/8795691641_c35c8ba166_z.jpg

also started on something that's been annoying me since I got it, the horn in the slim boss issue. With the slim boss and a standard horn it sticks out like this

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5345/8795682495_178d56318a_z.jpg

so took it all apart to see what I could do about it

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7438/8806260462_07612bca7a_z.jpg

decided I'd just grind everything down 5mm ish, shorten the spring and knock in the backing plate with the horn connector to make it sit a little lower, then cut new holes for the holding clip and see if it'd work.

not exactly pretty

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5456/8806258006_457904b54d_z.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8545/8795676079_5b894fda05_z.jpg

but it seems to still function and sits flush now. I cant test whether it actually sounds the horn as I'm missing the 10amp fuse and the horn connection, just another little niggle to sort at a later date.

Looks 100000000% better than shiny shit brown.

I decided after a few miles of using the solid engine mounts that they are far too hardcore for me, caused massive booming in the cabin especially when stationary. I think this is mainly down to my engine not running particularly smoothly tbh, so I swapped them out for the originals bar the gearbox which I left uprated. This is a decent solution for me as it tightens up the gear changes I can feel the car a little more and nearly all of the engine movement isn't transmitted to the cabin. Much nicer, I'm just not hardcore.

So solid engine mounts up for sale people. Literally popped in driven 2 miles came straight out again.

Rocker covers are finished and back in, dented the exhaust around the diff area so that it didn't catch any more, also moved the rear hangar slightly and reattached and secured all the mounting rubbers, as two had fallen off. The exhaust now doesn't hit on anything but I've seem to either have not done up the rear section tight enough, or I've managed to move the flange slightly when I've dented the exhaust tubing, as I now have an exhaust leak around the rear joint.

Went to the SXOC NW rolling road day down at tuning developments in Warrington

Had a few niggles with mine which effected my running a little, boost leak for one which I'd noticed in the last two weeks but didn't think it'd effect it too much, second is an exhaust leak after denting my exhaust to make it not catch the diff its moved the joining flange a few mm and needing to leave the exhaust bung in due to boost spiking to 1bar and hitting fuel cut.

Despite this the car ran a 177hp at the wheels and a 212hp at the fly, dyno chap reckoned if I sorted those issues out it'd be more like 235-240 at the fly

Things on the list to sort out. Boost leak finding, exhaust leak fixing, body panel fitment all over and body work and sort the power steering line out..

With MOT, Tax and Insurance along with a holiday to Bulgaria this month and being a studentwanker I've had to take her off the road for a while, but don't fret she'll be back later in the year hopefully before winter, as I finish studying and can concentrate on finding a full time job.

I've also sold quite a few parts unfortunately including all my stage 3 mods that where ready to go on to fund Uni, so will have to save up later and buy them back.

I've got a few things lined up that need doing before its MOT time:

Wiper Pivot - Drivers side
Exhaust Leak to fix
New Rear Tyres
Horn Fuse
Power steering line replacement
ABS Removal
Un-seizing all of the brakes as the rears aren't particularly effective and whilst driving home the fronts where pulling to the left then straightening up so giving them a good once over
Front Crank Pulley change
Find Boost Leak

All these things will be done whenever I get time to, she's currently at my parents so I can work on it with all the tools and space I need.

So I'll leave you with a few pictures until my next update when I get to do some work on it again.

how much did you pay for the car? and what is that sticking out the bumper..
idk how the xtd clutch held up for you but it went out on me in a 2 weeks. learned my lesson.

I bought it for £800, its just a tow strap as I had to remove the OEM tow hook to fit the FMIC.

XTD clutch has been fine for me so far done over 3500 miles in it, and it gets abused but only on the road, not been tracked properly drifted yet. I bedded it in fully though keeping it below 2500rpm for 1000 miles

I bought it standard with an exhaust everything else I've bought myself, definitely not cheap probably cost around 4k to get it to where it is now.

Those are headlight washers came as standard as mines the executive model over here so has a lot of optional factory extras

So I'll be getting this back on the road next weekend with some luck, job list for that is:

Rebuild brakes
Sort exhaust leak
Find boost leak
Replace power steering lines
Replace wiper pivot
replace crank pulley
sort out clutch pressure plate

Have some pictures.

There's still an engine.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7427/10409749786_b3e7b95c71_z.jpg

started to strip it down so i can whip the engine out and sort a few oil leaks and check the clutch cover alignment.

It rained a bit

and finally out

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3744/10409711864_d3ef6a7a25_z.jpg

Inspected the clutch pressure plate alignment, loosened off the bolts and adjusted it slightly and then re-tightened, running it again will see if its made any difference but looking at it i doubt it will as it was pretty dead on central to the flywheel.

Had a loose bolt on the starter motor, looks like the threads have stripped so need to find a longer bolt and nut to go through to secure it before I put it back in. The rear half moons where still leaking so I've covered them in instant gasket. rocker to head oil pipe was leaking so replaced that, turbo oil return flexy pipe is leaking too so replaced that and also instant gasketed around the take offs of the sandwich plate as that's still seeping. quite annoying to have all these small leaks after the time that went into sorting them out last time.

I've also made a new front bumper bracket so i can secure my wings again properly before the mot, just need to weld some bolts onto the plates tomorrow.

Today:

Done some more today, dropped out the abs pump and re-ran all the lines from the MC to the fronts and to the join for the rears inside the drivers side of the bay.

Lines mocked up

Making up the flares, thought i'd take an arty shot and forgot to put the brass fixing on before i made the flare so had to re-do this one :wack:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7455/10426216595_53f1ca3e15_z.jpg

And fitted

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2822/10426162994_9a6e3c5eab_z.jpg

I've also sorted out the drivers wiper pivot, ended up having to grind off the three holding bolts as they where just spinning in the plastic.

Welded up all the front bumper brackets and welded in new bolt studs, no pics of these just yet. Crank pulley also swapped over.

Cant fix the exhaust due to a bent flange from me smacking it with a lump hammer to miss the diff, so the old back box will be going back on, no biggy there.

Jobs for tomorrow, engine back in strip all the calipers and then bleed all the fluids, remove abs ecu and put in the horn fuse. Then it should just be two new rear tyres and MOT time :D

Just the brakes to sort tomorrow as everything took a bit longer than I wanted today, also since I'm working on my own so things take longer.

Managed to snap the connector of the front windscreen washer pump, so since my rear isn't needed I'm going to splice the wiring for that for now and pop a universal washer bottle and pumps on at a later date.

Stripped all the sensors off the front brakes, just need to quickly free up the brakes all round tomorrow and fill with fluids and it'll be ready to go.

Update from the other week:

Had a bit of a ballache with this last week, whilst also going to wales friday/saturday.

Before it went tits up

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5487/10522278393_f36b79987d_z.jpg

Thursday everything looked great, new brake lines in, went to bleed the system and got two leaks from the lines into the master cylinder. Turns out i had to re-do all the lines again as the flare I'd put on was wrong for the new fittings (should have checked first).

Also snapped the connector off the washer bottle pump to the front windscreen, tried to rig it into the rear pump but that doesn't work. Luckily i managed to get the headlight washer pump to work and plumbed it all into that.

Also sorted the horn connection out. Bled brakes, clutch and power steering and filled with coolant and all started up just fine, exhaust leak is sorted too.

The Big day, insurance, mot and tax and then driving it straight home as long as it all passes fine. Taken off the sunstrip because it was way to large to pass with ^_^ new one will be going back on asap.

So it passed again with flying colours, bar them having to jump start it :wack:

Drove it home after some issues with it starting warm, got it started and just drove all the way home.

A strip of wheel balance weights have fallen off the front so motorway cruising speed was horrendous. Another job to add to the list.

Turns out my Hot Start Solenoid was knackered, so I've had to by pass that this morning. Now it starts and runs and accelerates as it should.

Then had an issue with my lambda/o2 sensor plug which had a broken wire, so bypassed that and all is well and back running properly and being used every day again. :dw:

As of now.

Made some out of metal. pleased with how they've turned out so far. Not welded together here, will do that when they're in place.

Cheers xaser, I still have them but I think I might add them to the kouki bumper for pure radness, not sure yet though :)

So managed to get a whole day on it today where it didn't rain!

Pretty much everything I touched went wrong. Managed to get grinding marks all over my windscreen. So that'll need to be replaced.. -_-

Pretty much every bolt that has a welded nut on the inside of a box frame snapped the welds so they just span. All I took off was the subframe and the front chassis legs.. so I wasn't too impressed. The front subframe bolts snapped the top holding bracket so they just span on one side..

Other than that I stripped the clutch cylinder, brake cylinder and booster and chopped all the lines to the rear out as they're all shot as well..

Despite this I still managed to get a fair bit done. Half the tubs are in (mainly just tacked for now) and started work on the turret tops.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5594/15085901112_d35d16f3fa_z.jpg

Started to chop out the front lower crossmember, still need to do the rear part of it but ran out of 1mm cutting discs (or lost another pack somewhere..)

Work on the turret tops. These where just flap disc'd back they will get the Deox gel once I've done all the welding around them

After:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3858/15086277595_4e92c8cdb0_z.jpg

Still a very long way to go yet, but I at least feel a lot more confident with 1: My welding 2: My ability to save this.

I actually feel like I've made some progress which I haven't done previously because I've just been tearing down.

Edit: Also managed to bend one bonnet hinge. Wind managed to blow it off its stay while there where tools under the hinge so its bent it...

Given most of it a going over with POR-15. It's definitely not perfect, but its much better than I was hoping for and nothing a bit of seam sealer and filler wont iron out to make it look presentable.

Both sides got this treatment, cleaned up all the splatter and then etchweld primered.

Started fitting the kit and seeing how far out it is in places. its definitely going to take some fettling to get it to my standard..
All the panel gapes are way out/uneven/too wide/not wide enough/too high/too low. That'll have to be fixed on the days I'm not grinding and welding!

So I now have, spec1 rb25det standard
Rb25det gearbox
Front subframe
Clutch/flywheel
Front half of the prop
ECU and full loom

Pretty pleased with it, looks like it's done around 100,000km from the labels on the cambelt cover, but they're in Japanese so could be wrong.

Looks like it's very unmolested, which is good, but the clutch and fly look a little worn. Might change them before putting it in but not sure on funds yet.

I'll be swapping the plenum over before installing it and will be giving it a good once over. Can't wait to get stuck in now

So spent a little time on this today, took the covers off and inspected repairs I've already done to make sure they've held up with the weather. Some surface spots of rust in places but the majority looks very good.

It's the first time I've been inside it in around 5 months, or even looked inside... Unfortunately it's grown a bit of mould on the seat lets, handbrake and door cards. It should wash out but wasn't what I wanted today. Looks like the sunroof is the offending part letting water in..

I was hoping to do a bit or rust repair but I thought I'd start by completely removing the loom from the car so I can strip out everything that is unnecessary like abs etc.

Will clear out all the rubbish that's currently in the car, old manifold, gearbox mounts etc loads of random stuff in there atm..

Ordered freddy plenum, turbo elbow and downpipe that should all be turning up within the next week or so

Also have a cable braiding kit to tidy up my wiring additions.

I've set a target of April to get this thing in and running as it's been way too long since I've used it

anyways more next weekend

Had a little time this weekend, manifold turned up so I've started to test fit everything

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8613/16426423110_a15bcd99c5_z.jpg

Little more stretched than I was expecting being brand new.. But test fitting commenced

Old mani off

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8615/16406159967_a51220cf47_z.jpg

New on

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8672/16427625189_3659c76275_z.jpg

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8571/15993690533_d3cdca1e48_z.jpg

Using the standard fuel rail, but doing a few little modifications to make it look a little neater, which I'll document later on.

Also removed an unneeded water feed instead of blocking off, just cut and smoothed down the pipework and then slid water hose further up.

Original
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8674/16427624889_dc025695e0_z.jpg

Removed and ground down
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8567/16427627259_6e63a9abd2_z.jpg

Pipe refitted
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8594/16427624819_57e744e8e8_z.jpg

Also test fitted my turbo elbow, needed to grind down a little of the separator for the exhaust and waste gate gasses as it was too tight. Also snapped an elbow bolt which is a real pain in the ass. But I test fitted it none the less..

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8565/16406159627_43241cb367_z.jpg

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8619/16426256518_e4ba7b648a_z.jpg

Next up is to modify the wiring loom fir the RB so it reaches some of the plugs that have moved due to the inlet manifold.

Modify the injector loom to suit new positions

Drill out the exhaust stud.. And tidy up some of the hoses and the fuel rail pipe routing.

Fully stripped the abs ECU wiring out and re-wrapped the entire interior loom. Just waiting on some solder so I can repair the stereo wiring and add in a few connectors for my fade in/out interior lighting loom I made a while back and also a loom for my gauges to make them all plug and play.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7598/16123885324_a430e9b092_z.jpg

Also finalised the fitment of the plenum, prepped all surfaces, gasket sealed them all and thread locked all bolts. The only problem I came to was the threaded bars that come out of the head actually bend when tightening due to the surface of the plenum not being flat, which is annoying but I noticed in time so I didn't over tighten them. Also quickly wiped off all the oily residue on the rockers from transport.. Much cleaner now

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8659/16126239463_72106966cd_z.jpg

Also gasket sealed in the water pipe insert as I didn't trust its Chinese fitment.. I also sealed all the threaded nipples and the coolant temp sensors into the plenum for the same reason.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7586/16558641748_6019d2452c_z.jpg

Also managed to get a partial refund on my plenum because of the scratches on the surface, which was handy because I also got my import tax bill for it last week..

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7590/16558642908_911311be0f_z.jpg

Need to get me some weld in nuts now so I can fix my sheared ones in the chassis, then hopefully I can start the rebuild process after a few days welding now the weathers improving..

Mocked it up

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7633/16608077137_eb0a1b356d_z.jpg

New loom in the process.. all joints soldered, heatshrinked and cable braided or wrapped where I couldn't use the braiding because of plugs/wires etc as I didn't take the whole loom apart.
