Hi guys I recently bough an s13 hatch with an SR20DET swapped into it. Basic mods stock rebuilt turbo, HKS intake, HKS Bov, s15 side mount FMIC, and MINE's ECU. Recently after putting 600 miles on it, the turbo makes some whooping noise when spooling. It was only doing it a little but now it's spooling at like 2k-3k and makes a lot whooooop and then blows off. Was the turbo broken in or what's happening? Thanks guys.

BOV is too tight...thats compressor surge.

Am I losing power?

i dont think its compressor surge, this is happening while the turbo is spooling not when he lets off throttle. correct?

you should post a vid of the sound

Yes exactly, when it's spooling. I'll upload one now.

Here's the link to the video. 0:20 and 0:25 etc.

that would be the hks ssqv bov, mine always opened when letting off the throttle even at a few lbs of boost. I had a redtop with T25
Edit: I listened to it louder again and this time i can hear something else but i cant tell what it is.

Yeah, as soon as I hit boost it gives a Whoooooop~ then continues boosting. Can't seem to figure it out.

Idk man. Sounds like its angry lol.
Mine made a high pitched whining noise when the coolant seals went out. Who rebuilt the turbo?

Check your for a hole/leak near the turbo.
That whistle is probably the turbo sucking in, or expelling a small amount of air.
If you don't have a boost leak or other obvious problem, it's possible the turbo could be out of balance. If someone did a DIY turbo rebuild and didn't have it balanced, turbos can get really loud if it's an imbalance issue. Probably not your issue, but it's a possibility. Food for thought... Hope you get it figured out.

Compressor surge can occur both DURING spoolup as well as DECEL!

I thought compressor surge can't happen until the turbo is outputting more air than the engine can take in and wastegate can get rid of.. Or slamming the throttle shut without a bov.. Anyways your turbo sounds like a slide whistle if that's the noise you're talking about. Idk what it is but if I were to guess I'd say the noise is coming from the piping pressurizing

I think it may be possible that one of the clamps around the hotpipes aren't tightened properly. I'm going to have it evaluated tomorrow. Thanks for the input guys!

Are you using aluminum turbo intake pipe? SOunds reminds me of my previous KA-T.

True Compressor surge happens only while spooling. Compressor flutter is the sound you hear when you run no blow off valve or improperly adjustable bov.
Compressor surge is just the general used term

sounds to me that your compressor wheel is rubbing against the compressor housing. check the compressor shaft for side to side play. remove turbo inlet pipe and grab the shaft nut and then move it side to side. if you can move it considerately, turbo needs a rebuild.

Could just be some weird vacuum resonance?

Hey guys. After merely moving the intake pipe around; the noise has gone away. I think I just have a small disconnection in it. Thanks for everyone's input!
