Ok first thought was the starter because I would hit it and crack it and it wouldn't start. Pulled it out and tested it at auto zone and it passed. I checked the voltage on the battery and it's 12.60 so it's not a dead battery or a bad alternator. Help me out guys. I heard a click when I crank it so I assumed starter but obviously it's not that. Help help help

check voltage at the starter to make sure it's not a bad wire.

Try replacing the clutch relay.

I had an issue with mine where the starter motor was spinning and the solenoid was extending but it wasn't starting 75% of the time. The ring gear had broken lose from the flywheel and so the engine wouldn't start when warm. Cool it down and the gear shrunk back on tight enough to start the engine.

The car is an automatic. It's my sister in laws ride. So should I test the wire leading to the starter then

Check your grounds, double check the alternator as well. I had this same problem a while back and turned out to be the alternator lol.

In theory if the alternator was dead wouldn't the battery also be dead? I tested the battery and it's still putting out 12v and I would assume it should be dead because the alternator wouldn't be charging it.

Ok quick update. I connected a wire directly from the battery to the starter and it started slightly turning the motor. Once I turned the key to the on position it started the car. That eliminates the starter and ignition right? Since the starter actually turned the motor and it took the ignition being on for the car to start.

Probably the ignition switch. It's plastic and wears over time causing the copper discs in it to fall out of alignment. I had the same issue on a 95 as well.

check before buying a new ignition, check to see if your key is bent. If it is, try and straighten it and it should but if it does not, they are correct about the ignition switch.

did you check to make sure you have good connections at the battery? if one of the terminals is just a tad loose you will get the same problem.
