View Full Version : Attention, 240SX Buyers

Q: Why can a person such as myself not buy a 240SX without being labeled a "poseur" or "wannabe?"
A: Because drifting is being labeled as a fad. Because the 240SX is the weapon of choice in the drifting "fad." Thus, when I told my friends I am in the market for a 240SX, they say "Poser[sic], you're only buying one because you're a fad whore." No matter what the "excuse," I am simply a poseur.
Do I care? No. I'm into autocrossing, track driving, mountain running, and drifting. My 240 will be used for all that, along with daily driving. My current car, a 1990 BMW 325i, is a pile of crap that needs to be sold. (I rolled it in September 2002. Yes, I still drive it.) Don't let what other people think dissuade you from buying a 240; they're good cars with lots of potential, even if you aren't into competitive driving. While I'd rather not see them in car shows, if the owner takes pride in the fact that he drives a 240, I have no problems.
*Edit* There are plenty of reasons for buying a 240SX over, say, an e30 BMW. The 240 has better weight distribution, a better-designed suspension, an engine that is not almost maxed-out from the factory, less weight, and much more aftermarket support. Not to mention they look dead sexy.
In short, show up your friends by buying the car you want and taking good care of it... being a better driver than they are wouldn't hurt either. ;) After all, you're the one buying the car, not them.

Just do your thing and have fun....to hell what other people think. :fawk2:
I love mine, I didnt get it for any particular reason besides for the looks and it reliable. The drifting and Xcross is an added bonus.

the poseur would probably be the guy buying the ae86, and tacking drift stickers all over it. (painting it panda wouldn't do much too) or the guy trying to make his 240 look like an extreme drift machine.
i bought one recently too, been wanting one for the last 8 or 9 years now.(family hates 240's, always tells me to get something else.)
btw...people seem to stare at me funny sometimes....maybe they like that stock look with fading red paint. or am i a poseur??? i thought my car was a cheap daily beater with good handling.

If you're worried about being called poseur, then maybe you are? If not, then it should just roll off you cause you're not and don't care.

I'd take an E30 M3 any fucking day of the week before my 240. You sir are a poser.

I just bought my car yesterday after over a year of searching. I plan to do a sil1580 conversion and get an SR20DET. After that I'll get a Bomex body kit and some TEIN coilovers. :D
But really, I did just buy a 240SX yesterday. :) http://rancid.criedtears.com/files/240sx for pictures.

this is the problem with you guys.. right here... my friends do the same thing.. they sit around and say what they are going to do.. "im getting this..", "im getting that.." its annoying.. because 98% of the time the people that say this all the time do not get what they are talking about.. which makes you sound like a bandwagon whore.. because if something is hot and you say your getting one.. it sounds like a load.. anyway.. stop talking about it, posting about it.. and do it..
how can your friends call you a poser if you have one.. how can someone on the forum call you a poser if your just a new member that has one already..
rancid if your joking then hah.. if not.. thats alot of money you must be rich..

Flybert: Ditto, just not right now. The S14 (e30 M3's motor designation) is notoriously finicky. But who said anything about M3?
I wanted to make the people who felt like they were jumping on the bandwagon feel better about themselves, but nevermind.
The e30 is not supported nearly as well as the 240 in the aftermarket, not to mention its capabilities just aren't as high. I'm having more problems keeping it in good mechanical condition than Bob Dole has keeping it up.
By the way, here are a few pics of my car.

Rollage :hsdance:
Reminds me of my friend's Nissan Xtera. We left the bar the other day, kind of drunk(i know, i know stupid), and he decided he wanted to go of roading. So, after plowing through a chainlink fence(i know, i know stupid), he proceeds to tell me how this place is a "Great place to do donuts....like this" and cuts the wheel hard to the left. On the turn, the tire rolls off the wheel and then simply caught and fell right onto the passanger side of the car. Lucky I pullled my arm into the car in time as not to lose it. All my buddy could say, still sitting in a perfect 10-2 driving position above me is "Well, that wasnt supposed to happen." In the end, no windows broke, just some bent up sheetmetal and after sitting on it side for 45 minutes before being righted, started on the first crank and leaked no oil.....Nissan Power!!!!!
sorry, for hijacking the thread, but....whatever.
"Well, that wasnt supposed to happen."

i suggest you drive an 240sx before you go and buy one. you might think twice about switching from an e30.

Citizen- I'm buying a 240 and not looking back. I've heard nothing but good reviews about their handling, and handling's my forte. My e30 has crap steering right now due to an unknown malady and I'm not fixing it. I'm trying to offload it to a BMWCCA club racer looking for a cheap car who'll be willing to fix it.

crap steering? get an m3 rack and a few bushings. steering kills 240, much better turning radius stock. don't expect too much from the 240 stock, you will be disapointed. like i said, find one to drive and then make your decision. also your comment about the e30 motor being maxed out from the factory is pure ignorance. they are a good powerplant when tuned correctly. and regarding aftermarket support, the e30 community has everything you could possibly need, although usually at a slighty higher price.
just throw a newer m50 in there and call it a night

240 handling? Hmm well we have crappy front roll geometry with the macpherson setup, tons of squishy bushings all over the car, overboosted uncommunicative steering, and a pretty tame steering ratio. They all cronicly understeer entering a turn, only to kick out the tail when trying to accelerate out of the turn, especially with the open diff.
But besides that, yeah they're great!

Let me clear up some things:
I am not an e30 newbie. I am a member of bimmerforums.com with 1349 posts. As such, I believe I am qualified to say things about the e30 which may conflict with what you've heard. The E36 M3 rack is at least $400 to swap in, and I'm not going to do that swap on a car worth approximately nothing.
I am the one responsible for creating "The Official Engine Building Thread" at bimmerforums in the e30 forum.
I never said the motor was maxed-out, I just said it was close to it. If you read through the many posts about the M20's potential, you will find out that it does not breathe very well at all, and it's already pretty close to its max VE. Don't forget it's a single cam, twelve-valve unit, with architecture based in the middle of the 1950s putting out over one horsepower per cubic inch. The head is very restrictive and limits output to... well, not enough. It can be decent FI, but I would not want to turbo that motor.
The M50 is too heavy for my tastes. It'd make the e30 more of a nose-heavy understeer monster, not to mention I'd have to do some serious thinking to figure out a good front spring rate.
The e30's semi-trailing arm rear suspension setup leads to vicious oversteer. Vicious oversteer is a bad thing when heading down the backside of Palomar Mountain going 70mph.
As for e30 mods, they're limited to just two LSDs. (That I know of) Coilovers. Adjustable camber plates. Aluminum control arms. Pretty basic stuff. With a 240, you can pretty much get aftermarket everything for the suspension. There're at least 6 options for LSD, with several gearing choices. Plus, there's all the "JDM tyteness."
Anyway... I'm buying a 240 once I sell my pos. (Which is up on jackstands... again.)
*Edit* Sorry for the off-topic. Just had to straighten some things out.

I hear where you are coming from. I've loved the 240SX S13 -S15 for the past 10 years. (yeah, I feel old... :( ) I was never able to afford nor were anyone supportive of me buying one. The S13 isn't the most practical car for every day driving, has no interior space and is old etc. Girls hate it, normal people think you're some kind of freak... But I bought one. I sold my NEW car and bought a 14 year old POS. Crazy? Some say so but I don't. I set the car up the way I like it and love driving it.
I don't care about the drifting craze, I was into it before drifting was even known outside of Japan... from watching Option Videos back in '92. I saw crazy S13s burning rubber and out running everything and wanted one.
I've autocrossed for the past 6 years and have open track experience at Sears Point, Thunderhill and Laguna Seca for the past 3 years and getting this car a year ago has been the most fun I've had in a long time.
Part of that is having the car you like, no matter what other people say. :)

Haha, I'd take a 325 E30 over my pos S13 anyday. So much more aftermarket and just as much swappability, not to mention BMW sanctioned track events and driving schools.
If you want a 240sx then by all means get one. Most of the whiners are just people who had a 240sx before it became a fad and they think that makes them cool. Hell, its really only a fad in california.

Freeject- I'm a member of the BMWCCA and they'll let non-BMWs run with them provided you aren't a freeloader and have a membership. (Meaning you need to help them set up the course, cornerwork, etc.) Have you seen the new issue of TPR? That S2000 runs at the CCA autocrosses held at Qualcomm stadium.
The 240SX has more aftermarket support than the e30. I know this because I have somewhere near 50 or 60 links to 240SX parts and only 10 or 15 to e30 parts. I've lived with my car for almost two years now, and I'll say it's been fun, but trying. I had to do a timing belt change, inspection II, new axle install, new front wheel bearing (which requires the hub because BMW was stupid like that), and a new driver's seat.
