for an s13 sr, redtop.
I had the block and head sent to the machine shop so everything was prepped for my build. I get all the way through and my car smokes a little, on occasion.
snapped my timing chain and bent some valves.
while the head was at the shop getting eplacement valves, I decided to look into the smoking and tear apart my block.
long story short, the top oil ring got caught in between the piston and cylinder wall, creating a pretty decent groove.

what I did: took the bare block and honed the cylinder.

problem: although a lot smoother, there is still a groove.

Question: even if the edges are smooth, if I put a piston with the new rings back in the cylinder, would the smooth edges of the groove prevent scratching of my rings or does it not matter?

possible solutions:
bore and go with over sized rings/pistons
put another piston with good rings back in and hope for the best
try to hone once more

I need experienced input and intelligent/helpful answers.
I am at a loss and need to move in a direction quickly and accurately.
