Iv been dreaming of having an s14 with either an sr20 or rb25 I'm still new to this there's a guy selling his rb25 240 and the hood looks kind of weird and he says it's a Cali hood what's the point of it it kinda makes the hood look like its not on right so it lifts up by the windshield :ddog:
I'm also new to forums not really sure how they work lol

A "Cali hood"...really? Whip your dick out and slap him in the face with it for me please. Some people use legit hood spacers and while others use washers. They are generally used for engine clearance and or purely for aesthetics.

Acts like a spoiler? Guy is a retard. It's meant to vent heat from under the hood.

You new to 240's or something?

It's spacers on the hood hinges to allow for more air to escape the engine bay, hence why the hood tilts up toward the windshield. "Cali-hood" meaning its hot over here and doing that mod would allow some degree of heat dissipation

Florida.....................

You question has been answered in this thread already.

It's been proven to not actually help keep the engine colder, looks like SHIT, and should only be done temporarily if your swapped motor sits too high. But even then a solution should be figured out asap.

Raised hoods are do not increase performance, and they make your car look like shit.

It is only slightly okay when used for engine clearance, but even then it still looks like shit.

Sounds like that car has a Florida Hood.

One can just take off the rubber mouldings in the back of the hood and in front of the wipers, and get the same 'effect' without making their car look as if it has been in a wreck.

I actually think it helps being raised.

We spend a lot of time here in SoCal, just sitting in traffic in 90*weather.
So the hood along with a electric fan helps when you're only going 5 mph for over an hour.

It gives better cooling in pits, once you get going air packs up on top of windshield and reverse pushing into the engine bay. People just hear about it on street and believing whatever they hear from kids racing around in parking lots.

Since I hit the track once a year now days, its raised, and at the track,... i just take that shit off half the time anyways, lol

I don't see much wrong with it if the car is well put together. Probably just needs a proper name. How about we stick to the OG name: hood risers/spacers.

Living in Atlanta we deal with the same shit, 10 lane parking lots in muggy ass southern weather. I don't see a bunch of 240's or any other cars for that matter driving around with their hoods propped up. Working fans and a non-shitty radiator will not only work fine, it will prevent your car from looking like total shit.

I understand a lot of 240 owners (myself included) don't have a lot of disposable income but maybe instead of buying a kit or wheels you should put a few dollars into something a bit more functional.

Like what?

Whats $300 gonna buy me thats more functional?
I dont get it??

My SOHC is fully rebuild with almost all new parts.
I have all new radiator and all that.

Still wants to over heat once in awhile.
I would think the humidity actually helps to keep things cooler compared to dry heat.

A koyo maybe? Good set of electric fans? Nismo thermostat? I just don't see a point in spacing your hood. The amount of air flow that provides, especially when you're going practically nowhere in traffic, is minimal at best.

As for the humidity, if you think it makes heat better you must have not experienced it. Whether or not the humidity makes a difference to your motor, I couldn't say for sure, but it's still 90+ and youre in traffic.

The point is the heat and traffic are similar and there are plenty of cars here and other places with hot climates that run fine without spacing their hoods up.

Edit: shit, even when I lived in Tampa my car ran fine without a spaced hood. It's hot as fuck down there too.

a upside down 55 gallon drum in the deserts gonna be cooler if you cut a hole in the top so the hot air can escape and cooler air can be pulled up by suction.

Your engine bay with a sealed hood is basically the same.

And it all depends the car.

Since my hood has no insulation, all AC and heaters are removed, all EGR and extra vacum lines, and any water lines that ran through the intake as well,.... i need a little extra help.
And since im not wasting anymore money on my SOHC, and am trying to make it last till my 1J swap, I have the hood raised.

Now your average kid with a hell fat illest sticker bombed lip and white steering wheel, well, i bet they may not really need that hood raised.
But whatever, it just looks broken to normal people, along with thier sleepy eyes. ;)

BTW, i did a little google. seems humidity actually may make your car run harder. at least if you are using an AC system. i figured the evaporation might help cool, but i guess the interior engine has to work harder to burn the H20, so it works the other way.
wheres bill nye when i need em.

That's the way I ran/run my car as well. At any rate I'm just not a fan of the way it looks. That said I would space my hood if it worked and nothing else would. It seems to me that a car traveling at high speed most of the time would benefit from it far more than one in traffic.

And yea, Bill Nye is the shit (ex: recent remarks on creationism.) Surely there is someone on zilvia that has an engineering or physics degree and can shed some light on this.

there are hooks on the hinges that will engage in a frontal crash to make the hood buckle like it was designed to do to absorb the impact. Raising the back of the hood eliminates this and is a no go in my book

A propped up hood doesn't aid in cooling, maybe while your stopped in traffic. However, it actually does the opposite when the car is in motion. It actually draws in air at the rear(firewall) because there is a high pressure area at the windshield and a low pressure under your hood. Pressures gerenally try to equalize naturally. If you don't have your lower engine gaurd, splash shield, whatever you want to call it, could cause cooling issues as well. Having all your engine covers, shields, etc will help direct air where it needs to go. Sounds like you could benefit from some ducting.
