Odometer not reading, rest of cluster works??

OK so I swapped a rb25 into my s14. The rest of the cluster works except the odometer and tripometer. I reset the tripometer and maybe after an hour of driving it started to work for a little bit then quit again. I dont understand what it could be.

Most searches Ive done have said that maybe the VSS is messed up but that doesnt make sense to me since my speedometer works fine.

Any help here is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

bump!! any help on this would be great. so sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. and now sometimes it just starts to read backwards. any ideas!?!
