So i purchsed a mrecently for a rebuild thinking it was just a simple headgasket fix, well i came across a few things and need some advice.
Im looking to make around 300-350HP and need some advice for the setup and rebuild.
Problems i came across, motor ran really lean, hotspot on cylinder 3, bad rings in cylinder 1 and 3 , wondering what i should replace/do for the power im wanting to create.

Since your goal is < 350 horsepower, I would just a get another OEM longblock, and stick a gt2871r 64 on it, some 740's a power FC and a Z32 maf is all you need. Use the OEM headgasket and components, upgrade the fuel regulator and fuel pump, and some gauges to monitor with, you NEED a wideband but everything else is pretty much optional at that power level.
this option is the cheapest, and it evades the "built engine" problem, thus meeting the OEM daily driver reliability status while being affordable.

I still recommend you replace the longblock, that sort of thing is exactly why. If that is what you see, imagine what you can't see.

Yea, just get another long block. Unless you have the funds & are dead set on building a motor.. Cause that one is gonna need some xtra lovin

Since your motor is tore down to that already continue taking the crank and pistons out. Bring the block over to a machine shop to hone the cylinder walls and deck the block. It'll probably cost you somewhere around $100-150.
If your goal is 350 HP, used replacements will be fine. More than likely, you'll just replace pistons and rings. Stay with stock stuff to keep it cheap.
The work is easy stuff with the FSM on hand.
My roommate recently had a problem like yours. #2 leaned out and melted the piston to the wall and blew all sorts of cool stuff into the head.

This is a S14 block and we replaced 3 pistons from a S13 SR. Zombie motor, but works great! Get in touch with a machine shop and start asking questions. Everything I see from your pictures looks to be easily fixed for cheaper than finding a long block. Plus you get the added benefit and having a fresh motor.

No need to buy a new block. I rebuilt my motor not to long ago. Ran a little to lean. Detonation on cylinder #2. Took the piston out and had a good chunk missing. Honed the block and got a head job. Replaced all four pistons with Oem replacements. Only spent a couple hundred bucks. Motor has been running great.
But you should fist take out the pistons and examine the block. You might be better of just getting another long block depending on how bad it is, but looking at the pictures it doesn't look terrible.
