i think the consensus is that as long as you run hubcentric spacers and that the bore of the wheels match the hub, youre usually pretty good. 40mm seems excessive, however, but in theory it should still work? you would definitely need longer studs to fit the 40mm spacer and wheels, so might as well go with stronger studs as well.
i think the problem lies in accelerated wear of wheel bearings, and such, since you change the geometry of the suspension system = providing more stress on parts/system than originally intended.
BUT, im not a drifter, so ill let one of them chime in.

I am a drifter and many other drifters including professionals use spacers when drifting including me.
Of course you will need a hubcentric and torque it down the nuts properly. Using spacers properly will not cause any damage to your wheels nor your car.
But I don't see why on earth you need 40mm spacers to begin with? Do your wheels have that bad offset?

Hotboiblaze hit it on the head.
Hubcentric spacers are the safest way to go about spacers. Make sure you're not running bullshit studs on your hubs. That means Ichiba, eBay, other conversion lugs that are on the cheap side. Those will be the only things holding the spacers to the car.
PS if you need a spacer that wide, you're doing it wrong. Unless you're running oni camber all around & need huge spacers to push the already low offset wheels out, buy new wheels or get a 25mm at MOST, in my honest opinion.
