I'm getting my engine rebuilt because it spun a bearing on the #1 rod. My machinist says he is weary of grinding the crank down and wants me to purchase a new or used one in good condition. The damage isn't that bad to it... do you think I should just have him grind it and undersize it or shell out $500 for a new one?

Buy a new one or find a FWD SR20DE for cheap and use the crank out of that.

I picked up a crank from a g20 I think, was like $100 stock journals.

Do cranks get weaker over time? Is it a bad idea to buy a used one?

I know that the DET cranks are forged from the factory, I do not know if the DE's are. However, cranks don't generally get weaker, but they can deform if they haven't been stored correctly.
