If you have oil in your coolant, then it's most likely your head gasket. It doesnt have to be smoking out of your exhaust for the HG to be bad.

You exhaust usually would only be smoking if a large amount of coolant was pouring into your cyls...
As far as the pressure build up ... this is caused by 1 of 2 things...
1. you have a leak somewhere and as you lose water your car is just heating up and building psi in the cooling system. ( from reading your post this is not the issue)
2. Your HG is basically not sealed and the pressure the cyls produce is going directly into your cooling system and the pressure is possibly causing the thermo to stay closed.
Is your fluid level ever dropping ? Like after your done driving and let the car cool make sure your fluid is the same level.
Upon your reply ill try to help as much as i can. I remember my 2jzge had somewhat the same problem as you. I would be driving and after its warmed up my temp would skyrocket to the red zone and id just turn the car off and coast to a safe spot to park.. it ultimately ended up being that the water pump was seizing up and making the car burn water from getting so hot. After i replaced it the car hasnt over heated once.. But after that dilemma i got an aluminum oversized rad witch helped aswell.
CX racing makes some affordable yet nice rads.

your HG was gone to start with, i had the same issue if you are getting oil in coolant and pressure you have a break some where between the cyl and one of the coolant passages

most likely bad hg and head studs u may have uneven head pressure causing shit to spill out and other fluids to go in wrong places

their not sturdy their aluminium heads if it over heats it can twist.... it happened to mine i had to shave a lot off to get it level again, any time you blow a HG you want to redeck the head at least, you dont need the copper spray just put on the new HG and torque to spec.... oem bolts are torque to 22 then to 55 then loosen all bolts completely then retorque to 25 and final 55-62, remove the head in the loosening sequence and tighten in reversed sequence

I dont know if this has been said already.
A buddy of mine who is a master tech at Toyota said a quick test of a cylinder pressure going into the cooling system
1. Fill radiator
2. Leave cap off
3. Try to crank the motor
4. If bubble come out the radiator (bam, headgasket)

Don't let it go for too long, unless you like chocolate milkshakes.

Installed a new headgasket and used ARP head studs...

yup, quickest way to check for blown head gasket. once you take the head off, take it to a machine shop and ask them to perform a pressure test. if everything is good, just have them resurface it enough to make it perfectly flat and also to clean the old gasket material from the surface. they will also clean the gasket off of the intake ports. for around 60 bucks, i think that`s a cheap insurance that you are re installing a good head. good luck. also, replace your thermostat while your at it. drilling a couple of 3/16 holes next to each other on the thermostat will make bleeding the cooling system much easier and quicker. make sure the holes are on top(12 o clock) when you install the thermostat back in the housing.

That's what the bleeder screw on top of the intake manifold is for. Arp studs should be fine just go to arp website and look up all the specs your asking for.
