need timing help

how exactly do you time your car, do i need a timing gun. is there any easy way to go about doing this, my car sucks right now.

I just do it by ear. Turn it listen if I think its close I'll take it down the street and see if anything makes noise or dont act right. Thats my way the right way is with a timing light. Yeah TN!!
