Hey guys, I've been in love with 240s for a long time, especially S14.5s. I grew up around muscle cars and do not know much about sensors and ecu's and all that, which I know is surprising for a guy my age. Id like to buy a RB25DET 240 but I just found out about the whole emissions problem. Speaking of a 240 S14.5 with an RB, what would be the best way to pass inspection?? I live in PA and I think we are required to have OBD2 inspections here.. I would really appreciate your input, as I need to buy a car soon. Thanks.

According to Google, and many other places... RB's and SR's in RWD configuartion are 100% illegal because they don't have OBD-2 software. Long story short, if you have an OBD-2 240sx (96+) and your state requires you plug in, you're pretty much SOL.
Talked to JWT about it, they mentioned it *may* be possible if you took both stock harnesses, mounted all KA emissions hardware, correctly connected it, converted eeverything over, and had them rewrite a KA ECU to run the swap.
I don't think its worth it to money that hard... could just do a 95 and *explanation stifled to protect me from legal repurcussions*.
Bottom line: JDM Motor swaps are generally illegal for US emissions purposes.

Get a chassis thats not OBD-II, meaning older than 96, you should pass the sniffer with a proper cat. Now, if you guys have visual inspections too, then you probably wont pass unless they dont give a shit as long as you passed the sniffer.

Thanks for your input flip. I am good friends with a mechanic but I haven't been able to find some in depth info for my state on the web at least. And Future, SERIOUSLY?? That really helps a lot. I said it was a noob question, I just needed some confirmation from you guys. And "Wow" does not help answer my question. What were you drunk?

Look, I'm from NY, (upstate, OBD-II + safety) and I lived the OBD-II SR-dream. I said forget it and went KA. Wasn't worth the effort. 95 is the only year S14 that isn't subject to OBD-2 standards.
If you're married to the idea of a JDM swap, go with a 95. If you want emissions legal power, keep the KA and Turbo it. Or get an LS3 E-Rod lolz.
Good luck to you man.

I couldn't find any information on OBDII RB's but I've read on forums in the past that Type-X SR20det's are OBDII but this could be false, if you're interested at all I would recommend investigating... or worst case scenario.... MOVE TO FLORIDA! WE DON'T GIVE A FUCK HERE! lol, I have an RB swapped S13 and an SR swapped s13.

ya lol thanks guys. I know what I need to do now. I really appreciate the help. And other than Future's post, this forum is awesome, I hope to keep in touch, as I will be getting a 240 very soon.

Wrong, Japan does not have emissions so there is no such thing as OBD-I or II in Japan. So trying to make an engine that isnt even OBD-I compliant try to pass OBD-II inspection is damn near impossible. OBD-I is passable with a good cat.

So I still might be able to get an S13.5 with an RB to pass inspection... :D thats quite a lift (phew) this fiasco has had me stressin all night haha. Looking at 4th gen Camaros and such 0.o a cat is no problem, but I will definitely be looking at my laws regarding emissions. And Im buying a few books on electronic engine management. Like I said, I know carberators, not ECUs. Once again, I appreciate all the help. Now lets outlaw this emissions crap!!! Haha as if. Nothings ever easy.
