Buy from a place you can drive to. Examine the engine and threaten to come back with your older female cousin if something is wrong.

This.
Whenever possible you should buy the engine in person so you know that there aren't any surprises.
If that's not possible, Zerolift is one of the better engine distributors out there.

If you want to get great motors, and great customer service. Order from JDMsource.ca they ship to anywhere and there motors are AMAZING. They will send you a compression test video and such. Currrently i know 3 people in the hat that are running there motors without replacing any gaskets or water pump or nothing and they pull hard as fuck

Can't knock ZL. Got the motor and loads of other parts from Robert over the last year+. Good communication and after-purchase support.

Talk to Phil. Between me and my friends we have picked out and bought upwards of 14 motorsets. All have been very strong. Customer service is great. if you call today youll have it by wednesday. I have also gone and picked out motors for people and had Phil ship it to them. With very positive results. Couple guys on here actually. I charge 100 bucks to hand pick a motor. (mostly gas money) But they are local and their prices are very competitive. shipping is usually 150 bucks. or less. if you need any help feel free to pm me.
oh and their warranty is SOLID. had a guy blow up a 2j at an XDC event. warrantied it because it was within 30days..

As long as its not an S13 SR...most SRs coming in from Japan now are left overs that even the Japanese dont want.

And s13 SR's are the go to SR motor too. Specially round St Louis!!

I'd be wary of getting S13s now. Make sure you have compression but kinda hard to check for rod knocks, wont know till the car is running. Thats why I always tell folks to pick up engines themselves. That means they're not too far away to return it.
But yah, when you drop the oil pan, inspect it for gold.

My friend and I went and got our motors from Jdm Engine World. I got a s14 sr and my buddy picked up a k20r. I have yet to start it but all the internals looked great so we'll see. The owner, Jack, is a really nice guy. Friendly, clean shop, and great service. I noticed once I got back home from the city, a piece of the cast aluminum on the throttle body was broken off, called him up and he gave me a good one without any problems, also threw in a few extra parts.:bigok:

jdmengineworld is a 50/50 shot. If you buy from them you absolutely should be there to check out the motorset. I had to wait while they pulled out a motor from a front clip because the motors they had on shelf didn't pick my fancy. The redtop i received however looked immaculate except for a blown turbo which i should have checked sooner. I'm upgrading anyway so the t25 didn't really matter. i agree with s14driftr91. Jack is a really nice guy. he even stayed late on a saturday to pull out the motor for me for my convenience because i had a decent drive home. Good shop, ok motors. But i think my choice was limited because they were running low and waiting on a new shipment to cross over.

I hope I made a good choice.
I was looking for sites, nobody That was mentioned above had full motor sets..
I found "naganousa" on eBay and they had TONS of 100% feedback on motors... I went to their site and they had "actual" pictures but I'll know if that's true when I get it. It came with everything, ignitor, maf, etc.
I hope I made a good choice.

Um...what? What constitutes a "Full motor set" to you? ZL comes with everything...ignitor...maf....ecu...etc etc.
Most places do.
Hope it works...way to not do your homework...
Milly
06-11-2012, 09:01 AM
ZL didn't have any in stock either dude. I just said that. I did my homework, I contacted Zerolift, and bunch of other places people posted above. No body had red tops or they had just been sold.
Usually they would charge an extra $100 for the ignitor and maf.
Anyways Zerolift didn't have any left. So I went with a company that had tons of reviews... I googled them and read throug them before ordering. Hopefully all is well.

Ehh...the SR i got from jdm engine world had a knock so i got screwed. Plus they don't always have good deals. Sometimes the owner gives ridiculous prices on parts. Their motors aren't the cleanest either. I'd probably go with zerolift when or if i get a replacement.

At first I could barely notice the knock so i just thought it was the lifters, till it got worse. It's been almost a year so I'm pretty sure he can't nor would do anything for me. Plus i installed it after 30 days from when I bought it so it was out of their warranty anyway.

Sounds like you got the roll of the dice and shit out of luck. Do you have an oil pressure gauge? Would be atleast nice to know what got it knocking, shitty oil pressure or detonation.

Humpty bumpty.
Bought a motor from this place on September 7, and it has not shipped out yet. At least not that I know of, because I was told that when it ships out the freight company will contact me to schedule the time and date of the delivery. I messaged them twice within the past ten days, and both times I was told it would be shipping out that afternoon.
Is this standard procedure when dealing with JDM import engine world shop places?
I do not really care because I am super rich, just curious so I know when to park one of the Ferraris at the curb to make room for the delivery truck in the driveway.

I ordered my sr from jdmengineworld and it was a nightmare. I did a right up/review of them awhile back. I would go with zerolift or a place you can drive to, to physically do any test you want to it. And make sure all the pieces are there. I will never get anything from jdmengineworld again, the customer service starts off amazing but then goes downhill very quick they screwed me out of ALOT of money. It didn't come with a MAF and also came with an ECU for an rb25, they told me they wouldn't do anything for me. It was suppose to come with all of that stuff, on top of all that there was alot of other problems.
