I have a question. I went to the muffler shop
today to fix an exhaust leak I had and when I was asked what I wanted,
I simply replied could you fix the leaking problem/noise.
He took off the cat and found out the previous owner had the
muffler and piping welded shitty so he took
out the cat and said there was nothing in it..
it was just straight piping.. So I ended up
getting 2.5 straight pipes and removing the
heat sheilds because that was the Rattling.. all for 150.00
My question for you all is this. Am I losing horsepower through my weird/shitty cat or does it not matter?

It doesn't matter. Especially since it was hollow. However, if it wasn't, still wouldn't make a performance difference because you're N/A.
Btw, you overpaid. Shitty situation but what're you going to do now.

I thought I underpaid. but he did repair the damage to my muffler from previous exhaust piping... Oh well it was just extra cash I had left over after paying bills. Thanks for the insight

Did he weld in a straight pipe in place of the cat? If he did, what are you gonna do when you have to smog the car and have to slap a cat back on?

The previous owner had a straight pipe inside the cat.. i guess that means the cat is empty? idk.. And i just got it smogged last week. and cops aren't a problem for me where im at.

what would of been a good price for this?
2.5 straight pipe install to oem or fart.

The factory cat is just a straight pipe. The catalyst is in the factory down pipe.

For a s14 yes. S13 no. And he has an s13, looking at the picture.

put another cat converter back on the car, the previous owner probably was a dumbass and knocked all the material out of the cat, making it just a straight thru pipe.
you aren't going to notice the difference in power between a cat converter and a straight pipe on an anemic NA KA, except you'll be causing less air pollution, and your car will be quieter, which improves everyone's life. straight piped NA KA's don't sound good to anyone.

Every muffler shop around me would charge the same if not more for that, and yes its definitely too much.

I beg to differ. Having a cat or going straight pipe on a KA makes little to no difference, from what I notice it changes the power curve a bit. With a cat I notice more torque; straight pipe has better high end leaving not as much torque in low rpm. Straight pipe or not, I think it sounds good, but I prefer leaving a cat on.

I was thinking of eliminating my cat, I know it's going bad cause every once in a while my exhaust looks smells like eggs, I was told thats my cat making that smell so I'm thinking of just straight pipping it, no smog in Chicago for 1995 vehicles and lower

fucking noob, what planet do you live on? you live in the SGV.... thats like the mecca location of car guys getting fucked with. cops actually have a book w/ motor photos and they take photos of your engine bay.
i put money that we'll be seeing a "popped my hood, ref ticket" thread from this guy in a few months

Its the mecca of cars getting fucked with if you drive like a stupid kid, I've worked with law enforcement and I've been pulled over about 6 times just for a cop to tell me my car looks/sounds nice. It also helps that I know most of the cops in the area that I live in and frequent. As for your 'noob' comment, It seems like your the 'noob' if you think you can't refuse an inspection of your engine bay, It's a curtesy to let a cop look under your hood, sure you could say No and they could get a warrent, but thats too much money and wasted time on their end

a straight pipe is not literally a straight pipe you will still have to have the bends in order to clear the sub frame
my currant 240 is using an oem muffler without a resonator but it does have a cat it doesn't sound any different

NA setups need restriction for torque. Buying a new cat would have been a better solution. All your torque is flying out of your tail pipe.

you've been here for a matter of months and youre talking shit
cops dont pull people over to tell them their car looks or sounds nice. seriously, the fucking ego with you car nerds. the older i get the more i realize how car guys think the spotlight is all about them.
keep getting pulled over and going to court over "your car sounding and looking nice"

This is true......on my 93 i changed the pistons to the ones from the early 89 witch are almost flat and im using an s14 ka head after some time i put on a 3 inch cat and a 3 inch exhaust with a 4 inch tip....it was a gift from a friend.....i love the sound but i lost so much torque.......i hate it.......i need the back pressure....i had a factory exhaust before that and it was way way better and quite as he'll lol

Truth, in fact IIRC one of the magazines showed that the KA even NA, gains power/torque with a 3 inch exhaust. You're not losing torque, and backpressure is a myth. Hell most aftermarket s2000 exhaust are 65mm because of the bullshit claim of backpressure, and everyone that has gone to the 70/75/80mm has GAINED power throughout the entire powerband.

:picardfp: if you haven't dyno'd it you really don't know if you lost power/torque
Some of you guys seriously need to do more research before talking out of your asses, half this shit has been talked about all over this fucking forum.

I don't need to dyno the car to know i lost power.......the difference is so much that is really sucks.....no need to dyno every time you tighten a bolt or something
