hi everyone...
long story short I have a s13 sr20det. I've been having this problem since I've owned this sr. It makes a metal to metal grinding noise sounds like its coming from tranny or starter. It only does on crank up and goes away and will happen occasionally. Tranny shifts smooth no grinds in gears or popping out of gear.
here's a vid I found that's really similar to the problem I have.

I recall finding something on google that you can occasionally take the starter apart and clean it to fix starter problems. If that won't do it, I read that you can typically get them rebuilt at a reputable shop for a fraction of a new sr starter.

I couldn't access the video but what it sounds like is the starter not catching, if you have a sohc starter lying around, search here or google on how to rebuild them yourself, its not that hard.

took out my tranny today and some of my teeth on my flywheel were grinded down low or missing...

This happens sometimes when you have a lightweight flywheel... Is it factory or AM?

I had a similar problem, that I resolved by replacing the starter.
There is a video of what was happening, 240sx SR20 starter problem, - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eFlToUVV1w)
It seemed like the part that pushes the gear out wasn't going out far enough/quick enough so it would just grind against the flywheel.

I had my starter rebuilt.... that was the problem, POS old starter. Problem solved. I'm happy my car is running and in healthy condition. :]

Mine makes the same noise.
Replacing the starter and flywheel due to missing
and damaged gear teeth.
