should i try 1000 grit sand paper and sand it then 1500 grit and wet sand? i was going to buff for finish and clear coat to protect is this a wise choice?

WHY THE FUCK would someone tint KOUKI TAILS?!?!?!?!?!?! I fucking hate kids.

Thinner doesn't work.
Currently in the process of doing this on my tails. I had to go down all the way to 500 to get that shit off. Then I stepped my way back up to 1500 then buffed it out. Still can see swirls from the DA sander. So im gonna go to a higher grit. Probably 3000.

Paint thinner != lacquer thinner.
!= means does not.

yea they arent the same thing. you could have used aircraft stripper and it would have worked just fine. i would wet sand and clear coat the buff and wax and they should look brand new.

Hey brosef, you can get a new set of kouki tail lights if you're so upset. There is no difference with the '98 year model lights...

Wet sand till you get all the way down to 2500, then you can buff them with PLASTX to make them look new

*You do not need a clear coat at the end, trust.

Try 800,then 1000 then to make it shine 1200.
Wetsand and lots of bubbles
then some carnuba wax finish with plastx.
You'll have to apply the plastx every 3 weeks to make them look new.

well i sanded it down guys but seemed like it was leaving "white spots or (burn in) in some spots so I said FUCK IT! and stopped plut the kouki having those 3 or 4 fucking lines going across it in a stepping motion dont help. if someone else wants to work on them for 5 hours be my guest.... as for me fuck that... rather spend 250 for some mint ones locally rather than sand these bitches.

Buy new ones then make a youtube video of you blowing up the smoked ones and then ranting about people who smoke tail lights are morons and if you ever see them your going to drop kick them in the nostrils.

welcome to the club. and people wonder why working on lights is so much work. sure is hard to fit a DA sander onto something so small, eh? WAY different than having to re-do a fender or hood.

if you have access to a 3" DA, i'de hit it with low grit (80 and work your way back up to 1000 then polish)

i said WET sand, fucktard

possible. all depends on how good the previous idiot did to prep. if its stuck on and cured, theres little alternative to wetsanding

funny, all of a sudden paying a few hundred for new tails doesnt seem so bad. plus, the black borders will actually be black (as opposed to faded grey)

Hope its not too late to jump in this... BUT DO NOT DO ANY OTHER ONES MENTIONED ABOVE. I had a "Professional" spray my taillights on my 2010 subie and they fked it up real bad.. It began to flake and fade but the shop did not cover afterwards. I tried to take it off with all the methods as mentioned above but you are MIXING CHEMICALS WITH PLASTIC.... THATS STUPID, none of your people know what your talking about or have tried this.

I started with both lacquer and paint thinner and they barely took it off, then i tried air craft paint remover. Thats the one that fked up everything. It literally melts the plastic and makes it rough as hell.

If i look back, i think sanding would be the best try even though its the biggest pain in the ass to do but it will take it off. Sand, thinner, sand, thinner, repeat till gone and finally wetsand.

You can try the natural way of using stomach acid by throwing up on the tint.

your the only one that said to sand the taillights.. wasnt intended for you

And the people who say their solvents took off the layer, its obvious that the coat was thin and was not properly prepped or clear coated.. from the looks of OPs taillights, its been heavily coated multiple times and clear coated so thats why you do not use and chemicals to remove it
