There is a big plastic mount. Just like in the front doors.
4x6's will fit with slight modification to the mounts. (just have to drill new holes)

Hmm my car came with no mounts for some reason. I have seen other 89s with em but mine didnt for some reason.
5x7 shouldnt be too hard to modify, measure it, then make your own mount, the rear is easier cuz shape of the mount don't matter much. Just attach the speaker to the mdf (drill a hole in the mdf for the back side to go through), then drill four holes to attach it to the stock mount. Unlike the front you don't have to worry about door panels and stuff.

Stock speakers are 4x6.
The mount I guess might help with sound a bit. I do believe they serve as directional purposes to point it at the center or driver or something. At least the front mounts do that. Rear is probably the same.
I have seen some mounts that cover the back of the speaker for ebtter sound or something (not stock), but just browsing through crutchfield (don't buy from them, they are expensive).
I have 6.5" 4 way Pioneer speakers in the front, and some Infiniti 2 way (tweeter and woofer are seprate), woofer is 4". And a Bazooka sub I got for cheap. I love my setup. Just get some nice 4x6 rears with good sound (and get big speakers in the front for bass), or vice versa.

That is freaky, since I have the exact same setup and model speakers as you. I added bass blockers to the back, which helped out alot.
Honestly, you're probably not gonna be able to drill back there, even if you have a right angle dremel. The glass is way to tight. As for sound, well, the dead air helps alot, but man does it rattle.
has anyone tried 6x9 in the rear? 4x6 just doesnt cut in in the 240

I've got some some 6 & 1'2 3 way Pioneer's front and rear, sounds nice. Some audio techs say I need to get a lil multiway amp and it will sound alot better but I don't really bother too much with audio. 2 of my friends with RPS13's have 2 way pioneers
4x6's front and rear and it sounds a lil better then stock, not that much differecence in my opinon tho.

89-94 Coupe has 4x6 in the front and 6 1/2 in the rear
89-94 Hatchback has 4x6 front and rear
6x9 will fit rear of coupe easily. Just need to cut and screw it down. Hatch requires some custom work/creativity.
6 1/2 can fit in front of S13 with a custom bracket.
95-98 S14 has 6 1/2 all around. Don't know much about custom work on these cus I dont have one.
Good luck

No I dont mean drill through the mount, but make a mount out of mdf, drill holes in the mdf so they screw in tp the stock holes, then put the speakers in.
