I'm trying to buy a set of ccw and I'm having some issues trying to figure out what would be the right offset to get 5 inches of lip. I was talking to a guy with 17x10 0 offset and he says he has 5 inches of lip but when I do the calculations it doesn't add up wouldn't it be 4.75 lip .5 face and 4.75 backspacing. Wouldn't you need to run -7 offset to achieve 5 inches of lip

All comes down to rim face design...different faces, different amount of lips, different amount of pads, sometimes even different concave faces. Check out a Work wheel spec page and look at the difference in faces and how they affect the lip sizing.

the offset is measured at the actual surface that touches the hub. so a 10 inch wide wheel with a zero off set would have a 5 inch lip ON THE BACK SIDE of the wheel. you would have to measure how thick the rim face is and then add or subtract that to the wheel`s off set to determine the outer lip. if the rim face is 26mm thick and you want a 5 inch lip on the outer side of the wheel on a 10 inch wide wheel, you need a -26 off set.

i'm just curious why you are so set on having 5" of lip? shouldn't you be more concerned about having wheels that fit correctly?
