ecu was burnt up/half the harness pluggs where broke (that's normal)
bent throttle body (That sucks)
bent wastegate (sucks too)
water in 3 of the holes / sparkpluggs (They sit around forever what do you expect)
coil pack was badd (that's not their problem, they have no way to test that)
tranny mounts where bad (again, it's a 20 year old motor)
and oil pan was all dented up (I hope you know these go on a wooden pallet and not over pillows)

but in long run engine runs greatt , after ALOTT of extra MONEYY (Good I'm happy. It doesn't have rodknock and that's what counts)

It doesnt matter where you buy your motor, they will all need work/parts. Oil pans are always dented, missing/broken small parts, etc. your shipping a 20yo motor halfway around the world for shits sake.

As stated above there will always be a need to change/swap parts from an old motor such the sr20det, but on the other hand did they offer to exchange any of the parts from that motor you purchased?? Glad to hear it's running good though...

The problem with Canada is shipping is hella-expensive, Credit Card charges backs are umpossiball and back in they day there was a million fly-by-night engine sellers coming out of there.

Just buy the damn thing local. Between the Forms and Craigslists these motors are everywhere, I'd rather spend $60 in gas driving to get one in person then $400 in shipping to have a POS.

The warranties these guys offer aslo crap. How often do you have it in and running 30 days from sale? Are you going to spend $400 to ship it back?

You think a shop that imports a couple containers full of engines, clips, and other miscellaneous parts have time to type up about every single part they have? With some of these places, just be happy they gave you a compression check.

Personally, thats the reason I would only get engines from places i can drive to. If shits fucked up, I can always drive back to swap it or get a part replaced. I've dealt with only Venus Auto in Sacramento for this reason. Alot of folks hated them but I've never had an issue with them.

For a lot of us, driving to a shop isn't an option. I'd be pissed too, if I bought a motor, and that many things were wrong with it. If you are in the engine selling business, you need to MAKE time, to properly describe the items you are selling. There's no excuse for bad business practices.

Replacing a few minor parts isn't a big deal to me.. My sr from zerolift was missing a few key things and they replaced and shipped for free. (failed to replace a chipped ecu that would not start the motor tho)

It would be nice to see the motor in person and handpick it out, I just didn't have that kind of spare time when I was ready to purchase it

I don't think any of this would warrant a freak out however, it still runs.. Good compression, tranny shifts good, no holes in the block your good...

How was any of his problems " bad buiness practices".

IT IS A USED FUCKING ENGINE.

It was in a Car in Japan. That car was scrapped - because you know, it was wrecked, or maybe even the motor went bad.

Someone in Japan then hacked it out the quickest way possible, and crammed it into a container.

It then was shipped across the ocean, unloaded and transported a dozen times.

HAHA...dont forge the fact that most engines coming in now are engines that the drifters in Japan didnt want. The same guys who would continue to beat on an SR with 3 cylinders because #3 cylinder is blown and almost got no compression (I swear I've never done this myself).

Just buy from people on eBay. I've always had the best luck there because you can check their feedback. I'd never buy from anyone with less then a 99% feedback score.

People will go way out of their way to keep those high scores because that's what attracts buyers. Especially big ticket stuff like engines.

I've bought 1 1jz, 1 SR, and a used motor for my old accord from random ebay vendors. Never had a bad experience yet.

No, but they should have a disclaimer stating something along the lines of; "May or may not come with a bunch of broken and missing parts. May or may not run. May or may not blow up two weeks after install. Whatever, buy at own risk."

I am purchasing a motor this week. :x:

Imho when buying a used motor from japan you should save up more to refresh or rebuilt the motor before install that here is the only guarantee of a healthy running engine. iv e been screwed before belive me (3 bad motors from osaka rod knock ,no compression) now ive rebuilt 2 and sold parts off 1 to finance both builds

Agreed.

When I bought my SR all I did was put some belts on it and put it in the car. The oil pan, valve cover, etc was all fine/undented. Ran great for about 2 months and then it needed a water pump which I replaced and it's still running great a year later.

I think it depends more on who you buy from. I got mine from JDMHookup in STL and have nothing but good things to say.

I don't know if you already have something lined out Matej, but I would definitely recommend them since you're somewhat close.

I hate it for you OP, but a lot of that should have been noticed first thing. That's why you always inspect it before signing the papers for delivery. I guess I got lucky. my motorset was amazingly clean with no broken plugs, dented oil pan, or scratched valve cover. My first motorset, however, had a dead cylinder. Shit sucks. I'm also willing to bet that the water was due to the whole tsunami thing last year

Yeah, my friend's integra type R engine came in wet on the inside. He got a great deal for $1200, most of it is good, but then had to drop $2500 rebuilding, cleaning, and resleeving the car to spec.

As someone who has been to Tiger and seen motors stacked 4 high in Piles... I feel bad for anyone that has bought sight-unseen. Watched some pretty nasty motors get wrapped up when I was there. Buying in person is the only way to go. Like everyone said buy local. Pay a little more for the personal inspection and peace of mind.

professional, answered all my questions, shipping was very quick.
all in all a good buy, you just have to be careful, as people stated, SR's are starting to push 20+ years old now.

i lucked out, i got a pretty much stock motor, lots of new stock parts, doesn't look too abused. really clean overall. no dents on the stock oil pan either!!
