I have a s13 hatch with a redtop sr in it. Never had this problem up until today but my coolant temp kept spiking to H but it doesn't seem to be over heating( weather for today was prob high 70's). Checked the coolant its full, it wasn't bubbling at all and no smoke. I did notice after I shut the car off after it goes to H I put the key back in and turn the car on accessory the coolant temp goes right to its normal half way location( when starting it back up the needle will go back higher) .Also another thing I noticed is when you put on my heat to full blast to try n see if the needle moves, the needle actually go up! itll jump a tad bit higher? and when I shut it off it drops a little bit. You can litteraly move the switch back n fourth n see the temp needle move at the same time. Drove the car around it did this on and off and I kept checking it and everything seemed fine. What do you guys think?? Sensor??

Change the temperature switch sensor that controls the gauge needle. It's the one prong switch next to the coolant temp sensor.
