All events are for learning... IMO there are no pro's in the US!!! We have a lot of catching up to do!!! It's all about fun!!! Drifting is about car control and friends IMO... we're all fools!!! :w00t:

knghtryde
01-28-2004, 02:27 PM
We all suck... :gives: We just gotta get out there and have some fun... That's why there isn't any real time trials, but from my understanding there will be time trials at Sears Point eventually.

That would be kewl some real competitions. Drifters are gonna finally compete instead of just showing what they can do. I wanna see the Semi-Pros out there competing in a time trial.

Any more details out yet? I've sent an email to the norcal nasa regional director trying to get more info about this (wasn't sure who else I could try)... Haven't heard back, but I took a look at this page:
http://www.nasaproracing.com/norcal/events/schedule.htm
I'm assuming none of this event is going to take place on the track?

Looks like a lot of us have signed up for this without knowing what exactly is going to take place.

Hey guys/gals... latest from the Norcal NASA contact:
Hi Jay,

There will never be enough seat time at any event!

Anyway, we don’t expect more than 50. Right now we only have a handful of people. If we have people that want to do more at the end of the day, we will open the course on Sunday as well. Don’t worry about not having enough time. We will make sure that everyone gets plenty.

There’s no schedule. Driver’s meeting at 9am and drift all day. If need be we will drift Sunday too. How’s that?

01-29-2004, 05:33 PM
I have two more extra helmets one is ugly and the other one says HOE instead of shoei so if you guys need one let me know, Ed call me up i might be workin this weekend though.

Agent_S13
01-29-2004, 09:43 PM
So it starts at 9... so that gives us enough time to do tech and whatnot? I assume its going to be similar to the requirements for Auto-X then?

As for seat time, I understand that's how it goes w/ these kinds of events. Limiting it to 50 people should mean less complaints, especially based on the Thunderhill event, right? =)

Though this begs the question, if there is "grip driving" (w/ all the other classes on the sign-up page) will we be fighting them for the track or will it split up for the respective groups? Details are scarce so I'm hoping you or more info will develop over the next week. A schedule wouldn't hurt or a link to one would be great.

Thanks!

aaron: a friend at work called them up today... supposedly the event is only going to take place in the paddocks, not the track.

knghtryde
01-30-2004, 09:26 AM
That's what I got also. The reason they are trying to limit the numbers is because of the fact that they will not be using much space. To be honest I don't think the Paddock area is big enough to hold 50 cars for much drive time. Thunder Hill was kewl, there was a decent amount of drive time cause of the use of the split track and paddock area...

MikeDeuce
01-30-2004, 10:44 AM
Hm here's a pic..

CleanS14
01-30-2004, 11:00 AM
Yeah... I figure sliding all day for $50 is worth it especially if they're limiting the number of cars and will at least have a 4-5 turn course. We'll see I guess.

About the motorcycle helmets:

check out the NASA rules:
https://www.nasaproracing.com/hpde/preparing.html

The minimum rating is SNELL M85. Newer helmets with a SA rating are recommended. Eye protection is required (face shield, goggles, safety glasses). The more and better the safety equipment you have & use, the safer you will be.

02-01-2004, 03:57 PM
I think it is U.S. drift national thing, they may be decided not to use Hyperfest because Hyperfest cancelled last Oct. I think the paddock will be very crowded as regular NASA participants will fill the paddock quick. May be they will use the rear paddock at turn 7. We will see I guess.

Hrmph... from the latest update (Everyone already registered has probably gotten this already):

"If you are signed up for drifting it would be best to arrive about 8-8:30. There will be a driver's meeting at 9am. There will only be 50 people allowed to sign up. If you bring friends to sign up at the track, they take a chance of not getting in. Please have them sign up in advance. NASA membership is required, but at $35 it's a steal! You also get a $20 subscription to Grassroots Motorsports magazine so it makes it very worthwhile. We will be drifting pretty much all day so get ready for loads of fun!"

Am I the only one that didn't realize NASA membership was required?

If this membershit thing is required.....I might have second thoughts about going and getting my money back. WTF is Grassroots Motorsports anyways? Thats pretty retarted since many people will only be attending one or their events or very few. If this is the case, Buttonwillow would have been the better choice here. My response to the NASA 411 email:

I am concerned about this LAST MINUTE membership required fee. This was not mentioned in the registration process or details of the event. I feel that the participants without membership should not be held accountable for this fee unless they are willing to pay and would like to become a NASA member. The $20 subscription to the mag does not appeal to me and other members for the 240 community that have registered.

I also would like to express some concern because there is a lack of details about the event. What will be available to drivers (course/skid pad/jturns)... please let us know because we are entitled to the information and would like to know. There were other events going on this weekend that we could have attended, but chose this event because it seemed like a good deal. For $100 my friends and I could have attended and event at Buttonwillow with only 30 or so drivers and the entire track including skidpad etc.

This last minute membership fee is not fair and should not be enforced because we were not notified of this at all at the time of registration. I will not pay this membership fee because I do not want to be a NASA member and I was not notified. If this is a problem let me know and I will gladly accept a refund. I have read your cancellation policy, but in this case... since you DID NOT notify the parties participating in the event of these amendments ahead of time (give them more than a week notice) your policy cannot be enforced legally. So I will expect a full refund of the $50 registration fee.

Consider this $50 (reg fee) + $10 (entrance fee/ea person) + $35 (membership fee) = $95 //and we don't get to run on the track at all!!! and we were not notified of the membership requirement.

Concerned/Confused/Frustrated participant... I thank you for your time and look forward to your prompt response.

We'll see what Jerry K(NASA) has to say...

NASA response:

I am confused by your message. I will gladly refund your money but I am not sure that you understand. NO ONE is allowed to do this without being a member of NASA. Didn’t you sign up online? It won’t let you sign up unless you’re a member.

Let me know what you want to do. Sorry about your confusion. If you still want to do it, I will go into more details

knghtryde
02-03-2004, 12:38 PM
This entire event is bull. It really is just a way to be able to get more members for these guys... because they've already said you have to be a member... I'm pretty sure they are going to ask for some membership proof once you get there, and if you don't have it they are either going to keep your money unless you pay for membership...

CleanS14
02-03-2004, 12:41 PM
I have already talked with my legal dept here at work and they cannot keep the registration fee. They void their cancellation policy because they did not fairly give notice of the membership requirement in accordance to their time line in the mentioned policy. So anyone who has registered for the event can request a full refund if they try to enforce the membership requirement and try to keep your reg fee.

knghtryde
02-03-2004, 12:56 PM
That all depends. If they have given you notice that you must be a member in order to participate, they are only intitled to give you a refund if you request it prior to the event. If you request the refund at the time of the event they are not required to refund anything to you.

Because of this Thread even existing this is documented proof that everyone who signed up is aware of the fact that the event is for registered members. This thread becomes legal.

OK guys I got to the bottom of this for all of us... there is effectively only 27 drivers reg'd for the event.

There will be a skidpad and coned course... the coned course is not defined yet, but will be laid out on Friday... I may go out there and help ;)

Non-NASA members will not be required to pay the fee... BUT they will be having a number of events including drift at THill in 2 weeks where the whole track is utilized this time.

So we only got to pay $10 at the door and pass tech and we're cool...

Had this big response written but its been covered. Looks like its only $49 + $10 entrance fee.

A skidpad isn't too exciting, niether is a cone course... but since I have no seat time/experience this will be fun for us newbies (aka me).

Though I assume if we want to particpate in future events (THill in a few weeks), we'll have to have proof of NASA membership then. I'm glad they realized THEIR mistake in signups and make it more clear for their THill event. (I'd hate to see everyone linking to this thread about how they didn't ask for membership or something)

M85 is a pretty low standard, have you checked any motorcycle stores for a cheapie helmet? I've seen some sell open face helmets for < $50. Maybe you could even find one that will rent a helmet?

I *bet* that's better than M85... My motorcycle helmet is from 6 years ago and it's better than M85.

Or even this one for $40:

CleanS14

The spill to Sunday is for those that don't get time if more than 50 people register. Jerry K is the Norcal NASA guy. He said there's only about 30 or so people reg'd so far... since this event is their first... they might allow you to go on sunday *IF* Sunday even happens. I guess we just have to convince them that we didn't get enough practice ;)

You can never get enough drift practice when you won't hit curbs or chance getting tickets IMO!!!

here is the newest update as of 2-4-03:

Drifting:

The drifting will start at 9am. There is very limited space, however at this time there are still some slots open. A previous email sent about this stated that membership is required. It is in fact required, however because our system was faulty it allowed people to sign up without membership this time, we will accept them without membership. We plan on doing a number of these all year long. The next one will require membership.

You don't need an lsd to get ur car sideways, all you need it skills, it just means the drifts won't be as consistant or as good looking. Do not get discouraged if you have an open diff (one leg) I am using one right now and am able to gte some decent ones in from time to time. They say if u learn without a diff, when u get one, ur pro.

I thought it was another fun norcal event. I definetly feel like i'm slowly improving which each new event. Loved seeing the four instructers drifting on the autox course. Met a bunch of people who I talked to on vairous forums which was cool. :)

My only criticism might be that they probably should've split up the Circle Drill and AutoX course so both run groups a and b could run at the same time. I know it might be tough considering the limited space, but if its possible it would help a lot. Did quite a bit of waiting.

I wanted to just chime in and say that depite the slow goings, it turned out really well especially because it was my first event.

Its just too bad that the CH 5 news van would not be using that footage for anything. MikeDeuce and I managed to catch him as he as was leaving to see when it might be showing (hoped for a quick edit and a 10/11 pm showing) but he told us that they (assuming his bosses) wouldn't take so it looks like we won't be getting any local news media coverage. I bet he did have fun, he spent a good 4-5 hrs out there interviewing people, taping the lunch meeting and riding along with "Dr. Drift" --- btw, anyone know what happened to his car? After killing the tread on his tires he and a few people were under the hood of that M3 (not sure if Turbo or Supercharged, but definitely FI and it was not running/sounding right)

Anyways, a good event overall for beginners despite the fact it was small and the organization was a bit chaotic. No Sunday event though, its alright cuz that just means we have time to get ready for Thunderhill?

I wasnt expecting much from this event before I got there and even during the early morning I wasnt too happy but at the end of the day I realized I had really enjoyed it. Despite the somewhat poor course layout and disorganization, I was able to improve my skills and hang with friends so at the end of the day it was worth the $60. Also got a chance to meet some new people, heartwork, mooboy, etc. Hopefully I'll see everyone at the next event!

Nice to meet yah. You gotta let me ride shotty on the jdm s14. :bigok:
