I have a 90 s13 sohc ka with about 147k miles. I'm going to be driviń to Vegas this month and I wanted to just do tune up to make sure everything runs smooth. My question is if I change to synthetic oil from non synthetic will it help the engine or ultimately be bad? Runs great and no leaks at all.

i use synthetic oil on all of my cars, including my 89 sohc hatch. it is more expensive but it will last longer so you don`t have to change the oil as much and it will give you better gas mileage and little bit more power.

I look at oils like this..
the first # is Cold (starting under cold conditions & penitration)
the second # is Hot (how much heat before breakdown & stickiness)
I live in New Orleans so it never gets really cold so I don't need a 0W or 5W... I like to stay in the 10-15W range.
It does get really really freaking hot and Humidity is like glue, so 20-30 is a little low... so I stick wit 40-50.
IIRC Nevada is dry and gets rather cold at night but also very hot in the day... so I would take a higher Cold like 5W and a Lower Hot like 40.
I am sure someone is going to chime in with a PHD is Perolium just call me a dumb ass, but its my simple logic.

Well I was more wondering since synthetic oil breaks down gunk a lubricates better would I have to drop the oil pan ad drain it completely? To make sure is clean

If your engine has gunk or old oil build up, run Rotella for a few changes. then switch to a brand and weight you like, and stick with it.

Well I just wanted to do it to clean the engine and prevent build up to keep it running smooth till I swap for sr or rb, but isn't rotella a diesel oil?

Yes it has more detergents to clean old oil out, but still safe to use.
