Report: Nissan Reviving Datsun Brand - MSN Autos (http://editorial.autos.msn.com/blogs/autosblogpost.aspx?post=83144ea9-a980-4d44-8e70-6100d38bae92%3Ficid%3Dautos_2475#scpti2)

Japan's Nikkei news service is reporting that Nissan is dusting the cobwebs off its Datsun brand, dropped back in 1986, and preparing it for a return in 2014. Loyalists will be disappointed to learn that the "new" Datsun badge won't be riveted to the nose of any upcoming Fairlady Z in the near future – it probably isn't even coming to North America. Instead, the report indicates that Nissan will use Datsun as a backup brand for low-priced vehicles manufactured and sold in emerging Asian markets. According to the Nikkei, Datsun-branded vehicles will be priced about 500,000 yen ($6,200 USD) with annual sales goals of about 300,000 units.

Rumors about Datsun's return have been circulating for years. But only now, with Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn pushing to expand the brand into new markets (e.g., Russia, India, Brazil and China), does it really start to make sense as way to protect the upmarket corporate Nissan identity from being associated with low-cost entry-level vehicles.

The return of Datsun is interesting, but a two-tier strategy is hardly new. For example, Volkswagen uses its entry-level SEAT and Skoda brands to capture the low-cost market (though the two have moved upscale), while General Motors (working with SAIC) recently launched Baojun to target first-time buyers in China. According to TheDetroitBureau.com, the Nikkei also notes that Nissan officials have not commented on the report.

Good for them. Seems like a good way to get into those entry level markets since Korea, China, even India are making them anyway. Heck, every time you see what people are cruising around in 3rd world countries most of the time it's 20-30 old Nissans.

Scion is for the young new driver/first time buyer market. Not a 'cheap' branch/brand.

Dont think a Datsun come back would be welcomed very well in the US, i think alot of people think of oldass POS cars when they hear Datsun now.. "He gon' make it into a Benz out of that Datsun"

I read the thread title and hoped they'd use the revived brand to resurrect the Silvia... but probably not. Unless the Silvia comes back as a pile of shit...

So wish they'd send the Z back to it's cheaper, simpler roots.

That's why even if I don't end up with a FT86/BRZ ever, I still want it to do very well to coax other companies to throw their hat into the ring.

Unfortunately, you're in the minority in what the average consumer wants.

Read the fine print guys.

These cars are intended for developing markets i.e. we will NOT see them in the U.S. ... ever.

Everyone on this site needs to realize that ''they'' are not going to build the car ''we'' want. Ever. It would be impossible. Think back to our old guys, chopped tops, with semi blowers mated to hemi blocks shoved into ford bodies. No manufacturer in they're right mind would build that. I'm sure the older enthusiests wanted the same as us. Espically when the gas crisis hit man you could imagine all those pony car guys feelings when they brought out those late 70's turds. And the early 80's, that era was the worst for the mustang. Anyhow, you want a datsun 510? buy one. Want a modern 240? Build one. I'm sure whatever we put together will be 10x what any automaker could do anyway. If you happen to own one of the japanese greats? Please keep it clean and don't tear it up like a spoiled little snot. One day someone is going to want it more than you, and they'll be willing to pay.
