Unless you have an Autec SR20DE. Regular NA SR could use some boost or compression increase to be fun. Otherwise stay with the KA..

Here's pic of of NA SR + Boost..

I have an all motor SR20de. In the process of trying to stay NA.
Dont let the turbo manifold fool you. That was used to clear the stearing rack.

Actually, I've driven a stock SR20DE S14 and its alot more fun than my stock KA S14. Bounce off the rev limiter all day and just drift the crap out of it. KA just has so much dead spot stock. My old KA didn't start feeling like my buddy's SR until I threw a lighter flywheel on it and underdrive Unorthodox main pulley.

is that a s12? i wonder what thos short header lenghts do for your power band. the fun factor with a na is what its all about, i have a light weight flywheel and under drive pulley as well as some obx accessory pulleys(they are the only ones that make these) and what a diff it made! it really is night and day just need a drive shaft and that whole ka hates to rev in high rpm should be all gone.

Yea, VEs aren't too hard to get over 200 whp.

but why? these days its just as expensive to do a turbo swap, if you are going to swap an SR anything anyways. You might save a few $$ on the engine, ok. But $/hp ratio is in your favor when you spend that much more.

I think of it as why 86 guys like NA engines when they can swap in turbo/supercharged variants of the 4AG or 3S. Some people just like to mash the hell out of the throttle and just have enough power to break the rear end loose without having to modulate the power. Basically, all comes down to personal preference.

Like I said, NA SR20s are actually fun on S-chassis, more fun that the KA in my personal opinion. Would I swap in an SR to replace my KA? Fuck no. I agree with you on that, just doesnt warrant it to me. Would I drive an NA Silvia with an SR20DE in it and beat the living shit out of it, hell yah!!!

N/A SR? So... you want a Sentra?

Maybe the next thread will ask if anyone has considered doing a FWD 240?

NA SR did not only come in Sentra's guy. Going Turbo is the easy way out. Its to easy to drop a SR20DET and be fast. Some of us like to be different and not be band wagon bitches trying to be like everyone else. BUt to each his own. Style and opinions are like assholes we have them.
I have always been a fan of all motor power. I dont like having all that turbo crap in the engine bay.

You're 100% right Captain I-didn't-realize-he-was-joking. Taking a slow N/A motor and trying to make it reliably powerful because it's not the easy way out and not bandwagon sounds like a great idea. Forget anything else N/A like an LS1 or anything...at this point it's too maintstream bandwagon and it's only proven to be a reliable powerful motor. The OP doesn't want reliable and fast, he wants different.

So while you two draft up your plans for an N/A SR motor, I'll be over here enjoying my cop-out "turbo crap" motor.

Slap a set VG30DE pistons on your regular SR20DE to raise compression to 11:1 run E85 with some 370cc and other IHE mods.. Do some dyno tuning. Maybe then it will be fun IMO. Just finished doing it on a KA24DE with KA24E pistons and car is much exciting to drive.

some pics..

Haha you should have seen my SR20VE with SR16VE pistons. it came out to be something like 13.1. Too much for 91 pump gas and socal summer desert heat tho.

GroundPerformance

Damn.. 13:1 on pump gas. I'm sure you spent alot of time tuning that for it to be safe. Now that to me is a fun NA SR. But dont know about regular NA SR.

If it works for you then it works. I definitely wouldn't rock that drain setup which is the same level of the oil reservoir. Considering Its so cheap to have it taped to the proper place which is less the 20 at the machine shop.

When I do a swap with a performance oriented daily driver field of view, I try to think:
1. Reliable
2. Cost effective
3. Practical

An OEM SR20DET Engine is: reliable, cost effective, and practical in a daily.
Anything modified, simply will not be, unless you eliminate the COST effective aspect. Because $$$ fixes everything, if $$$ is unlimited.
It might be cookie cutter, it might be "common" on this forum, but with 240's so rare, and proper swaps so rare, I would hardly call a [$5,000 reliable 300 horsepower daily driver] common, they just aren't.

High reving N/A is just plain old fun even if your not making a whole lot of power.

nate1: Putting one in is pretty easy. The SR20DE (Non-Turbo) was offered in JDM model cars so it's an easy bolt in. Zerolift or any other importers almost always have them at dirt cheap prices ( <$1000 )

They make almost identical power to a KA24, though. In fact, KA24DE's make more HP (155) than early SR20DE's (140).

If you think it's worth it then go for it. From where I stand, the money would be far better spent on turboing your KA.

I agree if I had a s13-s14-s15 I would for sure go with a DET swap. No Fabrication needs to take place. They pretty much drop into place. When u are putting a DET swap into a different car the whole game changes. The reason I went with a sr20de is that, that they r way cheaper and takes alot less fabrication to complete. Alot of work to cram all that turbo stuff in the engine bay. AE86 are featherweight so it does not take much to get the car going. I feel the SR20DE is a great swap for the AE86. The motor makes great torque and tons of low and mid range power. Just need some cams and a build header to open her up more.

@Nate1

I have wonderered the same thing. I wonder how much power im loosing with these headers. I'm sure it cant be good for an all motor set up. These headers do not make good scavenging. Im sure thats why the motor kind of fall on its face after about 5500 rpm.
