yes i know about searching, every time i try i get an error...
Anyways ive built a few sr's before but Id like some opinions from builders on here..
picking up a sr'd s14 tomorrow, never been opened up, runs perfect, doing comp test when im looking at it but if everythings perfect im doing headgasket and head studs...dont wanna pull the motor or do anything i dont need to do BUT is it really necc to have the head decked if stock HG is perfect? i really dont have time to be down and ive seen people do a HG swap without sending the head out?...just looking for your opinion. thanks

Its not the head you have to worry about but the oil pump cover. Almost always, the front cover is taller than the block itself. Could potentially give the #1 cylinder sealing issues when you go to a Metal headgasket. If you dont plan on doing decking the block to match the front cover, a fresh stock headgasket and ARP studs does wonders.

Ah I gotchya! Hmm never knew that but is that why your supposed to rtv the front f the hg? I've always done tht and never had a problem except for my first sr rebuild I had theblock and head decked and forgot about the oil pump ad a little oil seeped out between the pump and lower side of the hg

Does anyone know if the sr20det resurface limit (0.008 in) 0.2mm is specs based on still using factory headgasket or do you have to make up that space with thicker mls headgasket.
Reason im asking is because i have a feeling the head I have will need about 0.008 in decked and the block will need about 0.002 in. I dont mind running a 1.8mm headgasket. Also will I run into any issues using arp head studs after its shaved down that much.

So if it's running fine and all, why pull the head and mess with the integrity of the factory assembly?

ARP head studs will be fine as long as you torque it down to specs...

what are the specs for arp studs? are they the same as the bolts or are less?

The arps come with directions, but I believe their final torque is about 80 lbs. I just rechecked the torque on em after my 500 mile break-in, and thats what they stayed at. I think stock head bolts are around 40 lbs. or so.

Non abrasive scotch brite pads, plastic razor blades, gasket remover. Copper spray head gasket and re-use head bolts as long as they are within spec. Check head / block deck for straightness with a straight edge and feeler gauge. Don't over complicate things people!

Is it ok to run 87mm bore size on a 86mm cylinder bore. I read on r.s. enthalpy it should be 0 - 0.5mm greater than the bore.
cosworth only has 87mm. Can I run that?
Also with mls head gaskets do I use rtv on the oil pump cover area like fsm says?

Almost all aftermarket MHG is usually 87mm. Its fine. I've never used RTV on any HG I've used but I always spray the copper gasket spray on all of them for insurance.
