View Full Version : Routing wastegate dump tube out the fender?

I'm going to install a bigger wastegate soon and am wondering if I should go ahead and route the wastegate dump tube out the side of the fender, behind the tire.
Is there any reason not to do this?
I haven't pulled my fender off in a while, is there a pre existing hole there I could go through?
I've also considered running it out the back corner of the hood...
Thoughts?
Post pics if you have em!

Do what you want. Can you weld?
You might get exhaust soot build up on your paint.

if your gonna do that make sure you get it out a lil bit and make something to protect your paint so it doesnt burn and you will most likely get exhaust soot or residue on your car but to each his own ive seen it done before but nothing after they did it bout effects

why? Is the turbo big enough to keep the rice off this idea? You dont want hot exhaust gas anywhere near anything if you can help it.

Been done a few times. Primo's S14 is the only one I can think off the top of my head though.

I think that Shredder dude has something like it and the Weld S14 that's FS right now has the full exhaust exiting out the quarter panel.

IMO I would just run it to the downpipe. It's gonna be fairly loud with an open wastegate. Is this a track car or a street car.

*shrug*
It's a gt37...
I don't really care about soot or heat on paint issues.
I just don't really like how it currently dumps straight down in the engine bay and I catch some fumes.
I don't want to route it back into the exhaust stream and bottleneck it either.
I guess worst case, I'll have it exit behind the tire at the bottom of the fender, pointing toward the ground outwards at an angle.

Only loud when the wastegate opens, fuck it do the shit.

and it sounds sick when the waste gate opens. the driver on the other lane would drop his jaw when that shit opens and starts pulling away.:squintd:

As much as I like the open wastegate sound... It ges obnoxious and annoying. I plan to route mine back into the exhaust at the base of the turn to go under the car.
Do what you want, I don't think it's going to be any different from where it exits now. If you want, weld a 90 on the dump and a short piece of pipe to get it further back under the car.

It may be cost prohibitive, but I'm still debating...
I found the perfect location though (on my s13):

All S-chassis have that triangle cut-out... However, that may be the best viable option. It'll keep it away from your tire/wheel. I'd use a hole saw to make the pipe have plenty of clearance around it and/or weld a small mounting tab to it to secure that said pipe from rubbing/vibrating on things.

How? What motor do you have?
If it's LHD with an SR, you're either going to have that wastegate dump going right by your brake / clutch masters, or you've got to loop it over to the other side of the engine bay. Or dump it straight into your front wheel well.
Primo's car has a JZ motor with the intake / exhaust sides flipped (compared to SR).
That's why a lot of guys with screamer pipes just dump them out by the downpipe.
If you route the dump down and out (thus going under the frame rail), if it's too low and you hit something, you're probably going to fuck up your wastegate in addition to the pipe.
This is one of those ideas that's cool in theory but takes some skill and forethought to pull off nicely.

post pics of the after, it should be sweet, as for me I run an open waste gate with no dump tube on my daily. I rarely use the boost on the street though so I dont mind to much!

My chassis is usdm (lhd), and the motor is a gte, so the passenger fender would be an ideal exit:
It would place the wastegate dump tube farthest from me in the engine bay, and pointing away from me also.
I do take your point though, as I am also going to retrofit abs into my car, and the oem location would be in the proposed path for the tubing.
And every time I go with wider fenders, I'd have to redo the exit on them...
I also need to consider the additional heat that more piping in the engine bay would cause (wrapped of course).
I'm not worried about supporting the tube, as there are some nifty little rubber auxiliary hangers that most muffler shops carry which can be added with ease.
Then there's always the question of having to redo the whole thing again when I upgrade to a twin scroll manifold...
The estimate right now is ~$250 for parts and labor on this to have it done in ss properly backpurged. - so I can assume that would double for dual gates.

Oh I got you. Having a JZ motor definitely makes it easier. Good luck!

I'm not trying to persuade you NOT to do this. I wanted to do this with my set up before I saw how complex the tubing was going to have to be. I actually wanted to hack up the bottom part of the fender behind the wheel along with cutting out some of the corner of the firewall to do a side exit dump tube. I ended up ditching the idea mainly because of how much weight the tubing would add and that weight would all be riding on the wastegate. That's not to say you couldn't fab up a mount or bolt point for it somewhere. . .
Here's what I ended up doing, I'm twin scroll so I had to make two dump pipes.

To OP, this guys setup might be a decent alternative. You'd probably have to move your PS reservoir back near the firewall and reroute the lines.

Thanks for the pic.
Fortunately, my exhaust manifold is on the passenger side. :)
