This great part and more are now available at uniqueautocreations.com !

Hey everyone,
I've been trying to dress up my engine bay for a while now like I know a lot of you have and there's one part that is just ugly and there's not a lot that can be done with it. That is the wiper motor. It just hangs up on the firewall with all it's jumbled wire mess and just generally pulls that corner of the bay down. So I was thinking of making an ABS plastic cover to hide the body of it. It would go over the red outlined area in the pic.
Anyway, what I was wondering is that if I were to make some of these would anyone else be interested too. I think I could make them for about $35 shipped. Please let me know what you think. Thanks.

I have been thinking of fully deleting my wiper system. Just would suck to rain-x windshield constantly and have to worry about getting a ticket.

So I am interested, make it and let's see pics!

why not paint it all black and be done with it lol

i, for one, never notice wiper motors in engine bays

or paint it black and extend the wires/plug away from it

leung
01-29-2012, 10:56 PM
word, if the rest of the bay looks good no one really notices the wiper motor. But the idea does seem nice though.

kalypso123

you could fab a cover and screw it back on with the same screws that attach it to the fire wall.

...or paint it black

I wouldn't worry about that your engine bay looks way to dirty anyways

Om1kron
01-30-2012, 04:10 AM
I'll eventually just have a carbon or fiberglass cover to put over that thing.

Heat tape after you dress up your engine bay. Be a baller.

chiboy002
01-30-2012, 10:15 AM
unless you're running a jz there is no heat on that side
thus making you look like a retard

delete it, fill the hole and run aqua-pel. shit works great on the windows

Thanks for the input.

Kalypso123, that was what I was thinking of too, using the existing bolts to mount the cover. And as for my dirty engine bay, That's not the one on my project car, I just needed a pic real quick last night. Actually I just powder coated the motor case a custom chrome / black chrome blend so it's looking better already but the body still needs help.

The "Paint it black" idea is probably the easiest way to help hide it but it doesn't really have that finished look and the wiring connector is still exposed.

If I make this, I will get a spare motor and vacuum form the cover over the body so it should fit really well. It will be made of black ABS plastic with either a smooth or textured finish.

I suppose if someone wanted to they could get some of that carbon fiber vinyl wrap and wrap it. That would look good too.

riprodder
01-30-2012, 07:43 PM
Here's a pic of mine. I just slid the motor case back on for the pic but haven't bolted it all back down yet.

It seems it would attract even more attention painted chrome, especially in a black engine bay.

The wiring to the connector can be extended thus allowing one to hide the connector in the windshield motor tray, and run the harness to it behind the firewall.

Rain X. I don't get how you guys buy that stuff. Its basically a light Oil you are spraying on your windshield. I'd rather not have oil streaks on my car.

riprodder
01-30-2012, 08:32 PM
I never thought of extending the connector. Now that you mention it, the rivets could be drilled out and the wires extended without much trouble.

Either way, whether connector tuck or plastic cover, it will look a lot better than it does now.

What's the status of your prototype?

riprodder
02-04-2012, 10:47 AM
I haven't started it yet, but it's on my list of things to do. I recently got distracted in powder coating lots of stuff in my engine bay, thus my interest in making the wiper motor look good too. I'll post up here once I get something going.

"Paint it black" I like that. Tiz funny. But painting it and tucking the connector involves more effort that a bolt on cover I think. At least its more effort once the prototype one has been perfected.

If you think there is a possible market, make it. Hell, I may even get one for the S13 depending on how it turns out.

Glad to see there are more innovative people still walking around these days instead of a trail full of followers.

I have a spare s13 wiper motor laying around that I just spray bombed gloss black. We'll see how it looks in a couple months when I yank my engine out and clean up my entire engine bay.

Thanks for the input.

Kalypso123, that was what I was thinking of too, using the existing bolts to mount the cover.

yea... pretty much

but ideally tho, you should just tuck everything else and leave the wiper motor.

motor heads don't mind. Its really the harness, fuse boxes, PS resevoir, and ect that come first.

Here's an update on the progress. I vacuum molded the first cover today but the plastic I used is a little too thick and it didn't pull in tight enough around the bolt holes. I'm going to try again once I get some more plastic in a couple of days. But at least you can get an idea of what it will look like

can you make it out of black nontextured styrene? would be much cheaper and easier to form. and I will buy one

riprodder
02-15-2012, 04:26 PM
I got some white non textured high impact styrene today. Sorry but the black was special order and I'm too anxious to perfect this, but I'll probably paint it black for the finished product. I'll post a pick when I form one later.

riprodder

It's a little more involved then the 30 sec. you tube videos show. After you build a vacuum plate or box the size of the part you want to make, you have to build a "from scratch" model of something you want to make or in this case you have to go through the ever long process of removing any under cuts on part (wiper motor) you want to copy so that the plastic will release from it after it cools. I used clay and card stock to reshape the wiper motor into something that could be molded. Now I've made a plaster copy of it out of the plastic part I pulled off of the motor. The plaster will let me tweek the final shape just right so that when I make the finished product it won't have the waviness of the clay in it or any other imperfections I find. Then I can either keep using the plaster one to make parts or I can cast a fiberglass copy if I need something a little more durable.

Rain X. I don't get how you guys buy that stuff. Its basically a light Oil you are spraying on your windshield. I'd rather not have oil streaks on my car.

no oil streaks, a bit of hazing if its not properly buffed off right, but the first rain washes it off.
It's a glass polish, fills in the pores of the windsheild, so its a more smooth surface the water can't "cling" to it. works great in the showers also if you don't want to clean them a lot haha

riprodder
02-18-2012, 07:18 PM
I've used rain x before too. You have to clean the glass exceptionally well. I recommend using Windex and wiping it off with newspaper before you apply it or else it will trap in anything on the glass. It does work really well for anywhere between three to six months.

But back to the main topic. I got to work on cleaning up my plaster model today. So far it's coming along nicely. I did have to add some to it because I wanted to clean up the connector area a little more but hopefully I'll be able to finish sculpting it tomorrow. I'll try to post a pic before I pull the first part off of it.

riprodder
02-22-2012, 07:34 PM
I finally finished the plaster model. Here's a pic of it. I will try to form a part tomorrow if I have time after work.

Not sure if it was in ur plans, but you may want to make some small vents on top of it so it doesnt overheat and prematurely wipe out the motor under constant duty. Nice work, def appreciate the solid effort.

OK folks. Here's the real deal. In these pics, first you'll see a couple of the loose covers, next you'll see the before and last is one with the cover installed. It's made from white styrene plastic and coated in Rustolium bed-liner coating for a nice slightly textured finish. Also as far as heat, the round (or chrome in this case) section of the motor is the part that would get hot if it even generates that much heat. It is not covered so additional ventilation is not needed. But thanks for the suggestion s13panic.

I've been gearing up to make a run of parts tomorrow. I'm planning on making enough for everyone that said they wanted one plus a few more for anyone else that might be interested. I got some more plastic yesterday so I should have plenty.
Also, harrypotter, here's a pic of my bay. The sun was really bright so it's hard to tell, but my intake pipe and air filter case are painted gold similar to my valve cover. It's a custom ram air setup that I fabbed last year. The air intake come in from the K's scoop in the front bumper. It really made a difference, especially anything over 60mph.

You should see if you can make a copy of the fragile defrost vent at the back of the dashboard, by the windshield.

All the ones I've seen are either broken, or super fragile.

That defroster vent would be difficult for me to make, being it's injection molded plastic and I currently only have the set up for making vacuum formed plastic parts right now. I know what you mean about how brittle those vents are. I broke my first set when I installed my new dash and had a real hard time finding another pair.

Also If anyone is interested in S14 wiper motor covers I have those available now too:
