View Full Version : DOC Race 350Z turbo kit in the making!!

Hey there guys, I'm working on a single turbo kit for my 350Z and wanted to show some progress. I wanted to build a kit that was simple yet effective making it user friendly and can be installed with just regular tools. You will see that the kit was built and installed on jack stands, no pulling motor needed. I did tons of research before even attempting to design and have came up with a kit that fits my needs perfectly. Here are a few key points I wanted to incorporate when building the kit.
- Must use T4 flange
- Capable of making 450whp with base turbo kit
- Upgradable to twin turbo
- Keep heat to a minimal (deathly afraid of engine fires)
- Simplify kit without sacraficing quality and function
Talking to techs at Horsepower Freaks and Precision Turbo, they suggested using a PT6766 CEA. It is a 935hp capable turbo that uses similar size housings as GT35R. I wanted to make sure the kit can make 450hp and still have room to play so the 6766 should be plenty for now. It's a small turbo that packs a big punch.
After seeing some of the front mounted turbo setups, I chose to go towards rear due to my fear of engine fire. I have seen turbos and piping get red hot on dyno pulls. It scares the hell out of me to think of something that creates that much heat stuffed into such a tight area.
Off to some pics. The main piece connects the left bank header to the turbo, we'll call this the turbo elbow. It also has a v band to connect the right bank exhaust. I wanted to make sure exhaust flow was not compromised so I did my best to make a T4 exhaust housing work. Turbo placement is not final but it gives me a good starting point. So far I've been daily driving with this exhaust housing on for 3 weeks with absolutely no scratches. I am lowered 1.75" btw.

Here are some shots of the downpipe. I figured I would build it with check engine light eliminators in case I wanted to mess with them down the road.
http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd383/Doc_Race/DOC_350Z/350ZDownpipe.jpg
Some shots of the turbo elbow installed with the downpipe. As you can see I capped off the wg and turbo cartridge because this is my daily driver and I have to keep it on the road as I build the kit. With the wastegate so close to the downpipe, it makes doing a dumptube or recirc simple and out of the way.
http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd383/Doc_Race/DOC_350Z/350ZDownpipe3.jpg
http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd383/Doc_Race/DOC_350Z/350ZDownpipe2.jpg
After the elbow and downpipe were done I started on the crossover pipe. I wanted to make sure it flowed enough to make some power so I used 2.25" stainless tubing. Paying close attention to available room and performance, we reworked the wiring harness to give extra room.
http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd383/Doc_Race/DOC_350Z/350ZCrossoverLowerHarness.jpg
http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd383/Doc_Race/DOC_350Z/CrossoverBuildLower.jpg
This made it possible for a crossover pipe with no extra bends or kinks and it won't melt your wire harness.

damn! what's the price point going to be on something like this? (manifold vs kit)

no price point yet because the kit is still in development.

Started building the intercooler for the 350Z turbokit. We're using a vertical flow core
http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd383/Doc_Race/DOC_350Z/350ZIntercooler1.jpg
This core will still support up to 800hp
http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd383/Doc_Race/DOC_350Z/350ZIntercooler3.jpg
We made our own brackets for the intercooler to mirror the factory bumper support for strength and a factory fit. Some minor changes were made to allow the PS cooler, horn and airbag sensor to still fit factory. We designed a relocation bracket for the cooler and also modified a few other components to work (more details are logged @ D.O.C. Race | The Opportunity to Perform (http://docrace.wordpress.com/)

I'll have some more update pictures this evening. We also started designing the DOC VQ Intake Manifold to complement the newly found boost....

The entire turbokit build and more is here DOC 350Z (http://docrace.wordpress.com/category/d-r-350z/) and is continuing to move along well.
Since then we mounted the oil scavenge pump and actually slipped the turbo cartridge on so everything is lubricating and functioning correctly. Next will be the upper intercooler inlet pipe and installing the blow-off valve...

Some clever ideas. I hope it pans out and is inexpensive. There is a lot on the market anymore in the $4,000 - $6,000 range.
Also, if you really are targeting the "cheap" crowed, IIRC 400whp is the recommended max for a stock VQ motor.
That would be more than enough to bring the car to life considering a stocker is in the 240whp range.
Good luck - keep us updated.

Been keeping busy on the Z kit, got the upper intercooler pipe finished and added the blow-off valve flange. Everything is plumbed in boosting 4lbs on wastegate spring, next will be the fuel surge tank, some custom fuel rails and dyno tuning!

Ordered up the ECU for the Z, should be here in about a week.
In the meantime, we started to build the VQ35DE Headers. These are going to be an upgrade to our Turbokit, but will have plenty of benefits for guys staying NA...

For reliability, I would do no more than 330HP on the wheels max (prob near 400 on crank like other person said). While Nissan made these VQ engines strong, the weakest link is the rings. Even the 370z engine are hitting over 400hp on stock engine w/ sc or turbo, but literally fall into pieces after around 20,000 miles.

Were never planning to get that type of cylinder pressure, feel less comfortable with the factory connecting rod setup to be completely honest. Thanks for the info though

nice work for your power levels you would be much happier with a 6266 it still has plenty left on the table above you power goals but will spool better. people are making over 600 on the vq35 with it. expect power in the 850 range mayby 900 with the right setup using the 6766.
also the weak link on the vq35de is definitly the rods, the de tends to bend rods around 450 to the rear wheels. never ever heard of broken rings or rings lands.....
nearly everyone on the major 350z board who is running FI is making more then 330 to the rear on stock blocks and a significant number of them are 380 or more.
anyway i was running 10 psi with a precision 6765 before the built engine and is ridiculous, now with the built engine i hit 20 psi about 4800 without boost by speed setup in the haltech the 6766 will spool slightly quicker 1st 2nd and 3rd are useless without some more tuning to the boost by speed, also need to step up to 305 tires in the rear over the 285's i currently have.
you will have immense fun when your done though.

Thanks for the input, we were working with that frame for potential power levels and also a larger frame in T4 to maximize the small amount of space.
Should have some stock block dyno info shortly, the cars currently getting it's fuel system plumbed.

kit looks nice. coming along quite well. any plan of doing a setup for the g35? not sure if the g has more or less room for plumbing but, i would think there wouldn't be too much of a difference. the guys over at g35driver.com would love a kit like this. many are going with sc kits for the fact of simplicity. this would be a great alternative for the guys wanting boost from a kit that doesn't require engine removal.
anyway, keep up the nice work. looking forward to updates.

The G35 doesn't have a ton of differences but I have only been developing with the Z chassis so far. With some slight modifications to the intercooler plumbing it should be pretty straight forward though.
Thanks, i'll be sure to update when it gets to dyno time :hsdance:

yah i know not a whole lot of space under then mine mounts slightly behind the transmission the hardest part is a charge pipe going past the steering knuckle. but dont wanna go into to much detail since my kit is from a competing vendor from another forum.
the pipe length is very short so will definitly help with spool, even shorter then mine and far far shorter then the crazy long ass pipe front mount set ups.
