View Full Version : If You've Shipped From Japan..............

I was just wondering what's involved w/ shipping stuff from Japan to the States (for myself). Car parts and maybe an engine or two. I am military (and no I'm not looking to ship parts for people, just myself), so I can ship from the base if possible, but I'm guessing for larger items (like engine palets) I'll have to ship by air or sea. I'm mostly wondering if there are any taxes or tarrifs I might have to pay. Also, for anyone who has shipped engines (on a palet), what does it cost to ship them to the east coast?

dont waste your time w/ engines. it goes under hazardous materials or something..i forget..either way, a shitload of paperwork
stick w/ body parts

for me, my friend ships stuff in a container for wheels and all and for small stuff, he sends it to me air mail. :)

key: make contacts w/ shipping companies

Another option is using a customs broker, which is what I did over the holidays, for my aero kit. However, to make it worthwhile you may want to somehow piece everything together so it can be shipped all at once.

Depending on the broker, it will be about $200-250. They will handle all the "paperwork" once the pieces reach the US. The only things I really had to worry about were paying the Japanese companies, verifying the pieces get on the boat, and making sure they provide the Bill of Lading, Commercial Invoices, and Arrival Notice to me.

Give this stuff to your broker and wait for them to call you and tell you to pick your stuff up at the port in your town.

Obviously, this is my personal experience and may vary with yours due to your military background and whatever items you end up purchasing.

Good luck.

You should have access to a whole book of guidelines to follow for shipping personal belongings from one country to another. I know as long as you are the owner and want it shipped w/ you as you are returning to the US it can come, but you'd have to wait just like furniture and all that good stuff. Since it's mechanical/ auto it would have to be thoroughly inspect because of all this terrorist crap. I know if you owned a vehicle for more than 6months you could have it shipped to you for off-road use only, but then you'd have to pay to get all that crap converted later on.....blah blah blah.

There is also online documents you can read to get all this info or check on base w/ customs.

my friend joe was there for the marines and he said you have to be above such a rank, and the marines would ship the car back, but then he would have had to pay for it to be converted, lol he was looking at a skyline there and found all this out, then before he shipped out back to the u.s. he didnt get his promotion so he didnt get the car, they gave him his promotion a week after he got back.........sucks

Well, silviagirl, I'll be stationed there for three years, so I'll have a little time to get stuff organized. I am married, but I don't know what that has to do w/ it.
And Ryan, I'm about to put on E-5 here on Feb or Mar 1st. I've tried looking at some sites, the base website has crap on it, and anything shipping wise out of Japan that I've found is mostly in Japanese or horrible engrish. I'm just looking for overall info so I have a solid place to start looking for info. I am hoping to be able to ship a few engines, even if I have to take them apart and ship it home in pieces(head, block, tranny, etc., etc....). I want to ship an sr for me and my brother since I'll be over there and will probably get it cheaper than over here. I need to send an H22 for my wife, since she said she wanted an Accord for a family car, I figured I'd give her something w/ a little more pep. Mostly what it comes down to is I want another s14 when I get there, hook it up while I'm there, and then strip it bare bones when it's time to leave. Get back to the states, get another s14, turn it into a track whore, and KA-T the one I got and make it a daily driver(19" Volks or something of the like, lookin pretty w/ a body kit and bein comfy). Have a beater truck to tow the track whore, and be livin sweet in Virginee. If I become a pilot by the time I get back, all this and more will come true, if not, "most" of this will come true. Now I'm getting OT, but thanks for the reply guys and gals, always good to know the peeps @ Zilvia are there to help(and flame, gripe and complain(j/k)). Thanks again guys.

But uhmm yeah..you will be able to bring stuff back, don't worry bout the shipping...just don't bring things back for others or it can get you into some trouble...

maybe if you are near atsugi we could all meet up sometime...but it sounds like you are a marine(due to the NC part)...so you are probably going to okinawa huh? well if you are going there I can give you names of a few people to chat with over there too...

hey dstyle, how long you been at camp drama? i just left there in july, possibly i knew you ? i had the white levin supercharged with blue flames....just wondering. not many people hail from zama.

well, if anyone finds or knows of any good companies to ship parts remotely (ie from my wifes house in sagamihara to me in dc) i'd appretiate it. got tons of rare parts that i need to get back.

anyway, lemme know what's up bro

yeah, that was me. i miss that damn car...sniffle...

anyway, she was junked in mid july but not before i spent the weekend stripping her of everything (body panels and all).

most of the stuff is sitting at my wifes house cause the army wouldn't send it. bastards. thats why i need to find a company that can go pick it up and ship it.

you didn't happen to know Ian did you? he left about a year and a half ago but he had the green silvia K's, moved to Misawa. Used to go out racing at the local drift spots in yoko and fuji.

BTW, you don't know the guy with the 93 grey civic do you? was slammed with some sparco's on it. my friend, if you see him, please tell him austin is trying to get ahold of him. he also has my suspension and rims.

gotta run bro but lemme know whats up.
