Last Friday (a special day off work for me!)...I put in my new toy:

Joe P. Manual Boost Controller ($35 shipped)

All I can say are good things. It was so easy to install...took like 10 minutes total. And most of that included cursing and smashing the damn hoses on the damn nipples. So tight! Then, I lashed the bish onto my cheapo bracket that holds my air filter in place, and went out to "tune" it.

Sooooooo easy.

Seriously, it took me two tries to get it perfectly set at ~.8 bar (11.5 psi). The "~" is there because it's an Autometer gauge, so I can't be 100% sure of the pressure...but it's reliable and cheap so I love it.

Anyway, the thing boosts so fast with no spiking at all. I freaking love it. And the turbo sounds MEAN! Because the wastegate isn't starting to bleed off pressure until the controller sends the signal, spool is quicker and the sound is LOUD! Sounds like my friend's WRX with all his crazy Turbo XS pipes. I love it.

I have renewed my love for the 240 and the SR20DET.

Now I just need to find some traction with these damn Blizzaks. Bitches light up when boost comes on in 2nd at 50+ mph!

I just put my HKS actuator on and have it set to 14psi. It is much better then my Blitz EBC. It dosn't spool as fast but it is much more consistant and holds boost much better. That is a trade off I will take.

sounds like you are enjoying the MBC. We will be putting one on the Mazdaspeed soon so I hope that it works as well for my wife as it did for you. (We will only be boosting to 9psi)

ummm...I have 225/45-17 Kumho Ecsta MXs for the summer. Right now it's zero degrees in Chicago. We have snow here. I use Blizzaks for the winter months

;)

nrcooled, which MBC are you getting? I looked all over www.boostcontroller.com and I just simply couldn't justify spending $100+ on some of the nicer Hallman MBCs. They look cool and everything, but this Joe P. mammajamma is pretty frickin nice too.

I think Im gonna have to gt some kind of BC soon im getting anxious to put the new turbo on.. its only been sitting here for 7 months

Probally the Joe P. He is a regular on www.msprotege.com and offers discounts to forum members. I was going to put my Blitz on her car but it spikes to much for a car running injectors that small.

MSPs are know to detinate if boosted above 10psi:eek:

stiff rear suspension and drag launches on s chasis cars dont mix. dont expect very good traction in straight line races in 1st gear with teins. Make sure all your bushings are in tip top order that will help a lot with stiffer dampning and draging or traction issues in lower gears. fm901s are ok, somthing even stickier might be in order.

i got the joe p MBC on my SR and love it too. super easy to tune and install. i like it b/c the adjustment screw is metal and not plastic.

i pumped mine to 15psi (thats all my turbo's makin..t-25) and havnt had any problems..holds pressure really well.

Joe P's rock, I use to have one on my old GSX, I never had to touch it unless I was cranking up the boost, would hold 19 psi rock solid.

Probably not much. It does have dual ball bearings, and a nice spring, a good locknut, and everything that comes in the kit is high quality. I didn't feel like searching around the hardware store for all the shit either, and I didn't want to have to delicately drill a .040" hole for the bleeder. I just clicked on some stuff, paid by credit card, and like 2 days later, I had a boost controller. I might have been able to make one for ~$15, but it would have probably taken me over an hour to find all the parts and put the thing together...

And I'm worth more than $20 an hour  :p

hey eric, I was thinking of going the same way... what's your setup now for your fuel system? I'm thinkin I'd boost to 10 or 11 tops (cuz that's how much I trust my autometer gauge ;) hehee)

My fuel system is basically stock. Well, as far as I know...I guess it could have been modified by the previous owner without me knowing, but I really doubt it. So, basically, I'm running the stock T25 at 11.5 psi with stock 370cc injectors and a Walbro 190 lph fuel pump. Oh, and a stock SMIC, too.

It runs totally fine. No ping. I will pay close attention to detonation when the weather gets warmer, but for now, it's totally kosher. I say go for it. You'll LOVE it. The car used to be reasonably quick (stock boost is not fast, people), but now it's actually pretty fast. I like it. A lot. I can sit there in 4th, just cruising along next to someone, drop it to 2nd and mash the throttle and I'm totally gone. It's like a rocket now.

Oh, and I suppose it's good for dori-futo.

That's good to hear that people support the Joe P MBC. I bought one for $45 shipped and there is this guy that gives shit to anyone who buys one or considers buying one because he said it was the reason why his RB20 blew up. I haven't installed mine yet, but I can't wait now. Well, I'm waiting on the exhaust system. (don't want to put 14 psi on the stock one I'm borrowing. doesn't seem healthy for the motor.)

how does it make it spool quicker though... i neve runderstood how EBC's did that, much less MBC's...

This is how I understand it:

The stock actuator regulates boost by slowly opening the wastegate as boost builds, then keeping it open at full boost, then opening and closing to keep the desired boost level.

With an EBC the wastegate stays closed the entire time and the boost controll senenoid does the bleeding off of boost. It does this slower then the actuator hence building boost faster or faster spooling times.

The difference between my Blitz SSBC (EBC) and my HKS Actuator was night and day. The Blitz spooled my t25 much faster then the HKS but the Blitz didn't handle the boost fall off well.

I hold 14psi consistantly with the HKS and with the Blitz I would spike to 15-18psi then fall to 9psi and go to 10psi.
