View Full Version : Trying quiet my SR exhaust. (Mufflers/resonator)

Hi guys. I have search but everything looks so old so I thought I make a small new thread to help out people searching and what not.

I have a SR with a test pipe to 3" Hks hi-power exhaust. Just kinda of loud for me. I am probably switching to a quieter exhaust overall but for now I know I want to which out test pipe to something else that'll overall tone or quiet down the exhaust tone.

I don't have that much knowledge but here's what I found. I dunno what's the best for my setup.

These are mufflers
MagnaFlow 13742 - MagnaFlow XL 3 Chamber Mufflers - Overview - SummitRacing.com (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-13742/)
Summit Racing SUM-630400 - Summit RacingĀ® Stainless Steel Mufflers - Overview - SummitRacing.com (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-630400/)

For some reason I think summit site just when down for me. I'll put the other ideas later and I'll try to keep this updated.

Post only if you have a real opinion. No BS shit please let keep this thread clean and simple. I know what I can do with exhaust why I said I will be switching to a quieter exhaust soon. I'm just wanting an opinion about switching a test pipe with something else to fix either quieting or making the tone nicer.

THanks!

turbo is one of the best ways to muffle sound. but you could do a high flow cat, res and to an actual muffler instead of fake/knockoffs or cans.

Put a stock exhaust on it. Super quiet.

I had a 3 inch straight pipe with a magnaflow muffler and it was not that loud at all..

I ran Megan type 2 on my s14. Quite as hell. And for sale!

High flow cats are a good way to quiet the exhaust down as well as tone it out a whole lot. I prefer the sound of an exhaust with a cat and muffler.

In a similar situation. Ka-t'd with 3" downpipe -> Hollowed out stock cat -> Megan Type 2 and it's too droney for my tastes at around 2500. Thinking of dynomating when it gets warmer. Also going to swap out that stock cat as I think it's causing some raspiness. Was looking to get a resonated test pipe but they're either backordered for months or discontinued or $160. Also heard that such a short pipe won't help much.
I guess I'm also comparing the sound to friend's with supras and 2jz's so that doesn't help!

Definitely high flow cat, and see if you can pick up an ISIS or if you can still find those Apex'i blacks.....

vibrant muffler and resonator - with a high flow cat. silky butta in your ears

Yeah on my KA I have the stock downpipe w/cat > hi-flow cat > 3" piping to I think it was a turbo style muffle/resonator and still loud to me. It's was a lot better than N1 style I had on it.
The stock hollow cat blows since it's 2.25" or 2.5" inlet/outlet and when you put that onto a 3" it blows out gaskets like nuts. I made a custom hi-flow with a the stock downpipe inlet and with a 3" outlet bolts up perfectly and it's sound much mellower and not has rasp. Nice sound when it's opened up.

Hmmm... I'm going to look into CAT again too but on that note wouldn't a muffler do better at lowing DB's?

Again tbh I am really looking into getting a either Apexi Noir or Hybrid Megaphone for the exhaust but I need more money for that for now I want to switch out the test pipe because in the end I don't want to run that.

I was looking at this smelly
Vibrant Exhaust Resonators from HorsepowerFreaks (http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/partdetails/Vibrant/Exhaust/Exhaust_Resonators//10996)

On that note anyone know on the top of there head how long the cat/testpipe should be?? I'm guessing like 15" or something.

^^ throw a vibrant 3" resonator on there, it will quiet it a bit and make it sound nice and deep.

Im running a vibrant muffler with one resonator. Very quiet when cruising but gets loud at higher rpms. If I added another resonator or muffler it would be much quieter I think. Sounds awesome though.

Megan OE type II.

I got pulled over for no front plate, cop made a comment that it was nice seeing a car like this without a big exhaust on it. LOL

I'm running full 3 inch piping mated to a stock subaru wrx muffler on my SR. It's quiet but still has a really nice sound to it.

Turbo mufflers are 3 chamber not straight though. Usually Quite.

Yeah the one I have is center inlet and offset outlet. But I have seen straight ones. The magnaflow XL look interest.

Guys I don't care about exhausts. I want something to replace my test pipe that'll lower my sound.

Ty for the opinion so far.

This is a shitty video but this is a high flow cat with a Trust DD (which has one muffler) on an SR with tubular manifold and 3" elbow/downpipe:

NGR6PJ5YvIA

A muffler will make it quieter but the sound will be about the same. A high flow cat will change the sound a lot and make it a little quieter.

Use OEM exhaust. My SR20DET breaths just fine through the OEM exhaust- so do S15 Silvia SR20DET's @ 300bhp- why shouldn't your engine?

Hey smartasses I don't care about the OE exhaust. I don't have one and don't wanna look for it so knock it off.

U say you have a hi POWA exhaust right. well if u have the HKS pre muffler and weld of a Vibrant/Thermal/ Apexi WS2

Im planning to do this with my SR, it should have a lower tone, If not ill weld on a WS2 to the the HKS premuffler.

I upgraded my sr20 motor with cams and now its super loud :( used to be quiet before

Does the vibrant super quiet resonator really tone it down?? I dont want to shell out another 500 bones for a quiet exhaust

I have a Hipower as well, and I consider it to be relatively quiet compared to most of what's out there.

That said I'm on the lookout for a Noir, hybrid megaphone or maybe Legalis R.

Buy my axleback, it is the solution to your problem. I swapped it out for a louder exhaust because it was a little too quiet. Its a straight through design..

Your hks hi-power should have a resonator in the midpipe. So this would be perfect if you weld it to your existing piping.

I have stock ka with a trust mx 3' full exhaust and it sounds amazing. Sounds stock while cruising/ daily driving. Has a nice tone and sounds awesome on the gas. I think rob22 had the muffler for sale not too long ago. I'll try to get a sound clip soon.

Take it to a muffler shop and ask them what they have laying around. Have them build you a axle back if you want something removable.
I have a full 3in turbo back that went straight to an HKS Dragger muffler and got alot of attention from the Police. They built a basic axle back for me using a Dynomax muffler that they had laying around...No noticeable loss in power, sounds great when you are on the gas...then is super quiet as soon as you let off.....

To the Megan Type II recommendations out there, I still think those are kind of loud. I don't think the mufflers are well designed for it.

From experience, RSR Exmag and Blitz Realize TT are super quiet. I highly recommend them for a street car.

thats sweet, ive never seen one of those. its a little pricey. but im most concerned with sound, look. my current exhaust is quiet. but its a fart can and i hate it.

i want something thats tucked up like stock. i couldnt find many pictures on this, how well does it mount to the body?

Spend $110 on a eBay exhaust with 4" tip you get a quieter tone plus you don't lose out on air flow

What motor do you? Is if it's a stock KA you've got smaller downpipe and those cat things. It's not just the exhaust.

what about a cat delete resonator

do any of those quiet it down?

I have rsr gt concept resonated+ test pipe = deep and quiet. I can drive side by side with a cop and sheriff they dont even look at me.

But when i use my apexi butterfly exhaust valve it is more quiet on top of that, it does sounds like a stock sr. Loving it.

I will post vid when i get a chance
