headlight harness melted

One of my headlights is dim or sometimes doesn't work at all. The harness is somewhat melted and I need to fix that. What is the best thing to do?

Cut the pig tail off, and cut the bad section out, and re run wire in between. Heat shrink preferably, but electrical tape can do. Also solder if real worried about coming apart, or for peace of mind.
